"A clean affair.."

Browsing on Amazon a few months ago I spotted a Vax carpet washer featured as a * deal of the day*. To be honest I hadn’t considered buying one before but the deal price of £149.99 persuaded me! I have hired a carpet cleaner in the past from rug doctor and had been very pleased with the results. However the heavy machine had to be collected and returned, plus the hire charge is not cheap! I justified my new purchase as it would be a lot more convenient and would pay for itself after several uses.

Whats in the box.

This is a heavy machine weighing 9.5KG. The large box contained the main unit, comprehensive instruction booklet and several tools including-

The machine has a powerful 1200 watt motor and uses dual tank technology, meaning there are two separate tanks, one for clean water and another for dirty water.

The machine also has something called twin air path technology meaning that it has very powerful suctions helping to suck up excess water. The spin scrub brushes rotate next to each other to effectively remove dirt and grime.

A spin scrub tool – useful for cleaning the stairs.

Upholstery tool.

Hose- attaches to the main unit and is used with the spin scrub tool and upholstery wash tool.

Hard floor tool.

Vax includes a cloth bag to keep the tools together.

2 bottles of 250 ML ultra solution were also included.

The machine feels very sturdy and appears well designed. It comes with a 6 year manufactures guarantee.

Getting started.

Having struggled for hours trying to put together a Karcher pressure washer, I was dreading putting my latest purchase together! However I needn’t have worried as the assembly took just 10 minutes and was really simple. The instruction booklet is very well written with clear illustrations to help. The handle is fitted by turning the handle lock to the open position and then clicks into place. The lock then needs to be closed. The tanks also need to be fitted into place, again very easy to do.

The top tank is for clean water. There are 2 caps one for solution and 1 for warm water and they are clearly marked. To fill the tank twist off the cap and fill with 40 ml of carpet solution, then add 1 litre of warm water into the other cap. The machine will automatically mix the solution and water. Click the tank back onto the machine.

Before washing your carpet it will first need a thorough vacuuming. The carpet washer has 2 pedals above each wheel; one to release the handle and one to turn it on. This is one noisy animal! However that doesn’t bother me but is something to be
aware of if you are planning to use the machine when others may find it annoying!

I am pleased to say that the machine has a generous 8 metre long flex which is more than enough for me. When not in use the cord wraps neatly behind the handle.

When you are ready to start turn the dial situated on the front of the clean water tank to wash. Squeeze the trigger behind the handle to release the carpet solution. It is best to apply the solution as you move forward and then release the trigger as you move backwards to collect the dirty water.

The bottom tank collects the dirty water When you have covered the carpet, turn the dial to the rinse setting and repeat to ensure any solution residue is removed.

Once finished the carpet feels damp but I have found that it dries quickly.

The dirty water tank has a large capacity and I find it is large enough to cope with several carpets before I need to empty it. Like the clean water tank it is easy to remove and fit. I was horrified at the colour of the water after cleaning!

Tooling up…

To fit the hose lift the accessory hose connector cover and click the hose in place. You can now fit either the spin scrub tool or the upholstery tool onto the end of the hose.

I use the spin scrub tool for washing my stair carpet. There is a trigger located on the hose to release the solution onto the carpet. Releasing the trigger as you move backwards collects the dirty water. This tool can also be used to pick up spills before cleaning.

I have used the upholstery wash tool to clean my sofa. It is easy to use and did remove a lot of dirt. Although the results were not as good as I had hoped for it still made a difference.

Although I have a large area of parquet flooring it is not sealed and so I wouldn’t risk using the hard floor tool. However if I ever get around to having my floors resealed then I’m sure this would be a very useful tool.

My opinion.

I have carpets in all my bedrooms and have now used the machine to clean them all. Although the machine is quite heavy, I found it easy to manoeuvre. I really like the twin tank design and the large capacity of the dirt water tank means I don’t have to
empty it too often. Both tanks are easy to remove and replace.

The carpet wash solution provided is low foam and has a lovely fresh scent. I find that 40 mls of solution is enough to clean 1 large carpet. You can reorder from Vax, but Amazon a lot cheaper! A 250 ml bottle of ultra solution costs just under £9 from Amazon.

I have also recently cleaned the carpet in my play room that was looking very grubby with several stained areas. I am really thrilled with the results and this machine has cleaned all the carpets equally as well as the rug doctor machine. I also think that this machine is easier to use with less time spent having to empty the tank.

On the negative side this is a large machine and so you will need to think about storage. I have a utility room where I store it, but it does take up quite a bit of floor space. The cloth bag provided means the tools can be neatly stored and the bag hangs on the back of the utility room door.

Overall I think for the price I paid this was an excellent buy and I hope it will give me many years of service.
