I was using a 25-year-old foreign cylinder cleaner (bought abroad and department store 'labelled', but probably Electrolux or similar), which didn't suck up much anymore. Advantages: Small, light, quiet and effective - great value for money Disadvantages: Small dirt capacity, telescopic tubes and head tend to fall off.
...I fell for this little Vax Mojo II a couple of months ago because it was cheap, small and light.
I was a little sad that it takes bags as bagless seems the most logical and least polluting way to go, but they're only paper after all and at only 20 quid, there wasn't much to lose. That's a fraction of the costs of constantly replacing Dyson parts.
I was delighted to find that this little marvel sucks the dirt out of ... ...a great deal less noise, fuss, awkwardness and back pain. The suction from its 1400 watt motor is excellent but does drop noticeably when the bag gets full, or close to full, but that's to be expected.
The low weight is lovely, and takes a bit of getting used to. It is SO very light that it feels like a toy, while it is actually a very effective cleaner. The telescopic tubes are plastic and they need to be pushed together very hard ... more
I was using a 25-year-old foreign cylinder cleaner (bought abroad and department store 'labelled', but probably Electrolux or similar), which didn't suck up much anymore. My mum gave me her Dyson because she couldn't manage with it; turned out that I couldn't get on with it either (4 to 6 new belt thingies per year and so heavy, unwieldy and noisy, while really not as powerful as I'd expected). Not having the spare cash to purchase a high-end replacement, I fell for this little Vax Mojo II a couple of months ago because it was cheap, small and light.

I was delighted to find that this little marvel sucks the dirt out of my carpets far better than the Dyson did, and with a great deal less noise, fuss, awkwardness and back pain. The suction from its 1400 watt motor is excellent but does drop noticeably when the bag gets full, or close to full, but that's to be expected.
The low weight is lovely, and takes a bit of getting used to. It is SO very light that it feels like a toy, while it is actually a very effective cleaner. The telescopic tubes are plastic and they need to be pushed together very hard because otherwise they will fall from together, or sometimes the cleaning head (head? Bit that you actually push over the floor) will fall off the end. It can all be pushed back together in a couple of seconds but it is a little annoying.
The on-board tool storage is actually a little thingummy on one of the tubes, onto which the crevice tool and brush can both be pushed to store them - it's a little odd having these always protruding from the tube while you use it, but prefectly satisfactory. When not in use, you can clip the business end of the tube onto the body of the machine, so that the whole thing sort of stands to attention and is easy to store that way, ready to go next time.
The accessories themselves are basic (crevice tool and brush) but perfectly adequate and the basic head adapts for hard floors or carpets.
