We initially bought this vacuum cleaner because our old one had developed a rather nasty smell and we'd managed to melt one of the pipes. (Don't ask)
This was on offer at our local Argos, and we picked it up for £50 (down from over £100). I'd heard of the Vax brand name and I admit I expected ... Read review

I wasn't disappointed.

The best thing about this hoover is it's powerful suction. This will get anything, and I mean anything, up from your floor. This is especially useful on wooden/tiled floor because you don't actually have to wheel it over an item to suck it up. This does however mean there's a bit of airflow around the base of the hoover, which can make smaller items move around.

This does however mean there's a bit of airflow around the base of the hoover, which can make smaller items move around. On the bedroom carpet I actually struggle to push it along, and have to get my stronger partner to do it (I am very small). We have a carpet that hangs on to every peice of fluff it can, so the hoover is especially good on that.
Another upside is that it does have a removable pipe with which to do hard to reach areas. There is no fancy set-up for this, you just pull it loose. I have yet to find where you attached the attachments to the body of the hoover however.
One downside to the hoover is how much noise it makes. I have never encountered a noisier hoover. You have to shout over it to talk to anyone. This means that hoovered has to be limited to sociable hours, expecially since we're in a flat. Basically, if you have pets that don't like vacuums anyway, they will HATE this.
It is actually quite heavy as well, which means that getting up stairs might be an issue. Not a hoover to give to your frail grandmother.
One downside is that in the manner of upright hoovers it will only move forwards and backwards, and has a wide base, which means that litte corners really do NEED the attachment, but as I said, the attachments are easy to use.
There is a warning on the instruction manual saying to use the right setting for the right floor, warning that the carpet setting can harm wooden floors. I've actually yet to use the carpet setting. When I put it on I couldn't move the hoover without putting considerable effort into it. The tile floor setting works fine.
The wire of the hoover isn't particularly long, which means there's a bit of moving sockets around when you're doing more than one room, but since you have to manually wrap the cord around, do you want too much wire? I have an open plan lounge/diner/kitchen and it can do the whole room fine from the one socket.
My last hoover was awful. Didn't suck anything up and got very hot (which was no fun on a warm day). This is much better and weight and bulkiness or no, I feel I got my money's worth... Wouldn't pay the full price though.
