Since I have joined this community, I was taken aback from how many of you people don't like Visa Electron. I do agree that they have limitations, but they DO have good traits.
I'm Italian and have moved to England a few years ago. It's useless to let you know what difficulties I had when I first arrived, but something that really helped me out was my Italian "postepay" card, a pre-paid credit card issued by the Italian post office. You can charge it with up to €3000 euros and works pretty well on the Internet and in the shops.
Visa Electron prepaid credit cards were introduced in Italy in November 2003, by the Post Office. I signed up for mine in December 2003 and it has only recently (December 2007) sadly expired. I won't renew it, but only because now I have better accounts. One of my accounts, though, has a Visa Electron card even now, and the reason why I won't close it is because I find Visa Electrons useful.
I have used Visa Electron online through many shops before I was able to get a Visa Debit Card, and I never had any problem to have my card accepted. There are two shops I keep on using it even now that I own a Visa Debit card and Mastercard:
-- Ryanair -- Easyjet
You know the reason why? When you book a flight online with Easyjet or Ryanair, you are asked to pay a debit card fee of £1.60 (if you pay with Solo/Maestro/Visa Debit) or a Credit Card fee of £3.00 (if you pay with Visa credit or Mastercard, even if it's the Ryanair one! Now, Visa Electron is another of the possible choices, and the ONLY one that is free of charge. My first bank account with the Halifax was an Easycash account, recently upgraded to a Visa Electron. Although now I have a normal current account, I kept the visa electron card as well and I use the easycash account on Ryanair and Easyjet. Why should I pay £1.60 when I can just transfer money in my Easycash account, pay with it and happily pay nothing as a fee?
I really don't know why you guys don't like Visa Electron!
