I have two Visa Electron cards from Bank of Scotland (Halifax) and have no real complaints about them.
Had VERY little trouble with acceptance since recieving them and far more freedom with my money. People who are saying that hardly anywhere accepts them are wrong.
As for putting it through as VISA online, 8 times out of 10 this does work and I've done it myself.
For those aged 16+ (as I will be in a couple of months) open an account with Lloyds TSB instead, they give you a Visa Debit card. Clydesdale/Yorkshire Bank issue Maestro on all of their accounts, for people aged 11+, even on their basic bank accounts for those with bad credit ratings.
Don't knock Electron but get something better if you can.

I would happen to work for a company which seems to have great trouble accepting them still...I guess there has to be one!

A visa electron is also much easier for travellers, or people with no credit history to get.. but do agree they are becoming more widely accepted now..
Advantages: This card is taken where ever a visa credit card symbol is shown on the website for buying. Disadvantages: People do not realise it is taken where ever a visa credit card symbol is
