I've just come back from holiday and the experience has reaffirmed one particular conviction of mine regarding getting cash abroad. I went to Aegina, a small island near Athens with one large town and a number of coastal villages and all I took was my VISA. No travellers cheques or cash, just VISA - and it was fine. I used ATMs when they were available and paid for all my meals with the card and although I didn't use my card there, there were plenty of Beuareau de Change's which would give out money on VISA credit. VISA have better rates than travellers cheques and you don't get charges commission at both ends. On top of this you only have to carry an easily concealable little card and if its stolen most issuers will send you a new one.
Advantages: none Disadvantages: You cant use the damn thing
I was recently issued a visa Electron debit card by LlotdsTSB, great I thought at last I can use a card and not worry about carrying cash around with me and as it is a debit card and as the info that came with the card says your account balance is checked everytime you use it then there is no chance to over spend ...even better. I was wrong I've had the damn card a few weeks now and ive yet to find a retailer that actually taked the thing ,oh everyone ... ...I'll be dammned if I can find anyone that will accet this, its so inconvenient ,what do the retailers have against it. You really would have thought that a big name like'visa' would be more recognisable wouldn't you . Its just a waste of plastic and paper. If your bank offers you one then forget it ,its not worth it hold out for a switch card. ...

Advantages: Convenience Use for On Line Transactions Disadvantages: Rewards are Not Very Generous
My very first Visa Card was issued by Barclays many moons ago when I was a student at University. With a student grant as my main source of income I did not use the card very often or for transactions involving sizeable sums. Later on when I was lecturing I got a Visa Card from the old TSB Bank and used the card much more extensively and was very pleased with the service I received. For the last 15 years I have had a Visa Classic Card from HSBC and ... ...Visa to be one of the very best credit cards. What you might ask are my criteria for saying so ? Well I fins this card enjoys a very high level of acceptability both in the UK and the wider world beyond. Most good class stores, supermarkets, petrol chains, restaurants, hotels, resort operators, airlines and other commercial establishments accept it. Then I enjoy the rewards that I get from using Visa. OK to be fair you have to spend a good deal before ...

...it anywhere because it says Visa on it, how wrong can you be?
The only place I've used it so far, successfully, is Asda.I did use it once in Smiths, with no prolems, but the next time I went in there the assistant said they didn't take them, Oh yes you do, I said I brought a cuddly Tigger with it last week.Well apparently I must have imagined the whole episode because they can't take them, she said.
I believe that if the shop takes Visa, it is ...

...the account) and the FREE VISA card. Real VISA - not the Electron one with the credit limit of your deposit x 3. So I gave the 75 GBP initial deposit and get the real off-shore checking account with real Off-shore VISA.
Great and quick... Even better then you could imagine...

Advantages: Recognition Disadvantages: no cash back
Visa is recognised everywhere - as long as it is Visa and not Electron, but that's another story.
When I went to Crete and ran out of money, I got money out on my Visa card, with only a minimal charge. This might seem obvious, but I think it is one of the card's great advantages. How many times has it got me out of a scrape? Not just getting money out but paying for things by card. I only wish the limit was lower!
When buying stuff over the phone ...

Advantages: You don't need to carry cash! Disadvantages: Many places don't accept it!
I was reading my guestbook when I noticed a note from lilkayb telling me to get writing, so here goes:
::::VISA ELECTRON CARD::::
I have had an account at Lloyds TSB since I was about eleven years old, this was then known as a Young Savers Account, When you get to 16, it changes to a Current Account. All I had to go with the account was a paying in book and a cashpoint card.
When I was fifteen I damaged my Cashpoint card and requested a new one, a few days later I recieved a letter from the bank containing my new card, only it wasn't the card I'd wanted. They had sent me a cheque guarantee card, only problem was I didn't have a cheque book! I rang later that day to tell them what i'd requested and what i'd recieved, the lady on the phone was very helpful and assured that my cashpoint card would be through the post very shortly ...

Advantages: One of the only debit cards available to under 18s Disadvantages: Not accepted everywhere
There are only two debit cards that I know of which are available to under 18's, one being Visa Electron and the other being Solo.
I decided when I was 17 that I wanted a debit card, as they are so much easier than carrying cash around with me - and much safer too.
My bank account at the time was with Lloyds TSB, but they could not offer me any type of debit card because of my age.
After finding out that Halifax would be able to give me an account with a Visa Electron card I quickly accepted and opened a new account with them.
My card arrived, and I hit the shops!
It was so easy to be able to walk around town with my Visa Electron in my wallet and just a small sum of cash for the places which don't take it.
I felt safer, knowing that if my purse was stolen I didn't have any cash in there to lose, and that my debit card could ...

Advantages: Use abroad and in UK, accepted in most retail outlets Disadvantages: Not many online retailers accept
Yep, now at the age of 11 you can claim your own debit card from both Natwest (Solo) and Barclays (Visa Electron). As usual with most banks you get a cash point card, but it is not to useful if you want to use it abroad. So, eventually I got myself an Electron one, and found it extremely handy. Virtually every shop in Europe will accept Electron and most high street shops too. This is because of major card merchant services like Barclaycard and Streamline enable this.
But here is where the disappointment comes in. Electron is fine for those who prefer high-street shopping instead of using the Internet, but for the internet, electron is lousy. I could say this about solo - online shops such as Tesco and Sainsbury does will not accept this card, but they will do so in stores. This is no doubt taken as a precaution against under ...
