You know when your hair needs some attention...
Mine was definately in need of some recently. Having dyed and highlighted my hair a few times over the past couple of years, it was beginning to look a bit dull and dry.
You know the signs - you use good shampoo and conditioner, you dry your hair and even though you use protecting lotions and a low heat, your hairdryer still leaves your hair looking kind of frizzy...very annoying. The only solution being to use hair spray/gel or some similar product to smooth down those hairs that don't want to settle down - this then leaves your hair flat without body and it gets greasy quickly. So what can you do?
This was what I had on my mind last week whilst walking around Boots. I wanted to try out a hot oil product as I have heard good things about them, so what better than VO5 Hot Oil! Although I have used the VO5 shampoo and conditioner products before and had not found them to be as good as expected, the Hot Oil is a completely different kind of product so I thought I'd give it a go.
Product and price - UPDATED ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
There are three different kinds of Hot Oil that you can choose from: for fine/fragile hair, for coloured/damaged hair and one for normal hair.
The hot oil comes in little plastic tubes, which you can buy either individually (for 99p) or in packs of three.
If you have never used this product before I would obviously recommend that you only buy one and see how you find it, and ensure that you choose the correct oil for your hair type - otherwise it might leave it feeling greasy.
(UPDATE 26/08/2001)
Well following my visit into Boots yesterday to pick up some more Hot Oil I found out that the three pack is priced at £2.99! So it is actually 2p more expensive than buying three individual tubes. I really don't understand this - it should be cheaper but it isn't. So don't be fooled into assuming that buying more in one go is cheaper. Make sure you check the price!
Directions ~~~~~~~~~~~~
Prior to use you will have to heat up the tube by placing it in warm/hot water for a few minutes. You use Hot Oil BEFORE you wash your hair. Wet your hair and then twist off the top of the tube. Squeeze the oil evenly over your hair and massage in. Leave for no longer than ONE minute, then rinse off. Finish by using your regular shampoo.
The oil doesn't really have a scent as you might expect, so your hair will be left smelling of your regular shampoo. There is no need for using conditioner. The product continues to protect your hair for up to 3-4 washes - I plan on using it once a week, which I think will be sufficient.
I was half expecting my hair to be slightly greasy and get dirty quickly after using this and I'd have to wash my hair the next day, but this was far from what actually happened! My hair was left very manageable (as if I had used conditioner), shiny, clean and not appearing weighed down. I was amazed! Considering I have fine hair that many products weigh down, this is truly a remarkable find - my hair was definately less frizzy after use and the Hot Oil seemed to have an effect for a few days.
All in all, a great product that you can use alongside your regular shampoo and a product that is reasonably priced! You'd be hard pressed to find something better!
Advantages: Leaves hair shiny & healthy, really quick to use Disadvantages: none
...and they do stock other VO5 products so I’ve no idea why! Packaging…
The oil is in 4 separate little tubes which are packed inside a cardboard box. The box is blue with VO5 hot oil written on the front. It is pretty normal looking, neither boring or dated, or exciting and modern. The little tubes are long thin plastic pockets, they are clear and squashy so you can feel the oil inside. They are quite simple and just have the VO5 logo and ‘hot ... ...the directions printed on the back so if you throw the box away you can still read these on each tube. The lid is a little plastic nodule that you twist and snap off which is easily done, and the oil can then be squeezed through the hole. What it promises…
It says that it will: “Dramatically revitalize hair, saturate your hair with moisture and strengthen it up to 4x. This vitamin and protein formula restores moisture to dry hair and helps ...

Advantages: Hot oils work fine but using Vegtable or Olive oil is exactly the same Disadvantages: none
...hot oils do, plus it will save you a few bob.
I still recommend VO5 Hot oils, as they are very good, but I also recommend people to try out the alternative, as you will be very surprised how well they do the job and for much less money. ...

Oil be back..... Review ofVo5 Hot Oil Hair Treatmentby
kazziebears
Advantages: Ease of use, easily rinsed off. Disadvantages: May need several uses if hair badly damaged. Not really a disadvantage though,is it?
...days! What to do??
VO5 hot oil treatment, that’s what to do!!
Last time I bought this it came in three small tubes that you had to heat in a cup of hot water, snip the top off, and apply to damp hair, leave to work for a couple of minutes and then rinse off.
Well, it’s the same principle now, except that this product now comes in a larger tube with up to 5 applications in it. Graduated markings down the side of the tube show you how much to use ... ...Oh well if this VO5 stuff doesn’t deliver miracles, and that is what I demand! It’ll be the virgin stuff for me………..extra virgin I’ll have you know!
It’s nice to be back!

P.S Apologies for the title.....it seemed a good idea at the time!! ...

Frizz to fab Review ofVo5 Hot Oil Hair Treatmentby
welshangel666
Advantages: Easy to use, no chemical smell Disadvantages: none as yet
...saw a recommendation for the VO5 Hot Oils in the beauty section of a magazine so decided to give them a go.
I bought them in a pack of 4 15ml tubes which are usually £3.98 each (though I had them from superdrug by one get one free at the time I bought them).
The instructions are priinted on the side of the box and they are really simple to follow. Before shampooing hair, warm one unopened tube of oil up in a cup of hot water to heat it up for one ... ...one minute, rinse thouroughly after a minute then wash your hair as normal. And it really was a s simple as that.
At first I was worried that there wouldn't be enough in the tube to cover my hair as it is nearly waist length and quite thick but it spread easily over all my hair. There is no chemical smell with the oils either which is very nice.
I would definately recommend these to anyone with problem hair. After the first try I instantly felt ...

PAMPER YOUR HAIR Review ofVo5 Hot Oil Hair Treatmentby
linda01865
Advantages: manageable hair, a nice pampering Disadvantages: can not think of any
...was surprised to find a vo5 hot oil hair treatment at a knock down price from £3.49 reduced down to £1.50.
The instructions seemed very easy to follow and most of the others were out of my price range at that time.
The 3 small golden tubes were in a small beige looking box and on it it stated enough in each tube for upto 4 washes.Value for money I thought. More than one pampering.
I usually enjoy showers so wash my hair often. I decided that I ... ...have lasted me 6 weeks in all, but I tended to be a bit heavy with it, although it goes a long way after warming the tube in warm water. The three tubes lasted my 5 weeks not the 6.The oil glides over the hair easy and a gentle rub in is all that is needed. I left mine on for a short period and then as per the instructions followed up with my usual shampoo.
So what did it feel like after? Did it live up to its name?
The product does give some promises ...

Advantages: Gives your hair a lovely shine Disadvantages: None
...I have been using VO5HotOiltreatment off and on for years now. You don't need to use it every time you wash your hair, but rather when you need to give your hair a bit of a boost.
VO5HotOiltreatment consists of a plastic phial of oil which you stand in a cup of hot water for a couple of minutes and then massage the oil into your scalp for one minute.
You then rinse the residue from your hair and shampoo as normal.
The result is that your hair has a healthy shine which lasts.
It is very easy to use and smells fine too....

Advantages: repairs damaged hair, improves hairs condition vastly Disadvantages: price maybe- but not compared to results
...As mentioned in other reviews by myself, I have been coloring my hair for years- many different shades- often involving bleaching- resulting in me having dry damaged hair...
I used to use various treatments- vo5hotoil, and treatments with protein seemed to get a good response from my hair- but never lasting.
Having found the Chihtsai brand, and being so happy with the results- I have obviously tried many of their products-
So although this one retails at £18- I took the risk.
Glad I did!
This treatment comes in a tub- I think it's 300ml- I've run out- so I don't have the empty tub to look at! It is very thick and creamy- so a little goes a long way.
When my hair was extremely damaged- I was advised to apply this using a mixing bowl and the brush that one uses to apply hair color- usually they are black- with a long plastic...

Advantages: Restores life into your hair Disadvantages: Expensive on a weekly basis
...Now that I have joined Ciao after months of using it for opinions, I now find myself studying and thinking about everything I use and now consult other reviews before I buy something, this site is addictive!!
Anyway, getting on to the op in hand, last week I purchased the VO5 Advanced HotOil Moisturising Treatment from Superdrug it was 99p for 15ml; my hair has been very dried out lately so I picked the moisturising one, there is also a nourishing and revitalising option, so Saturday morning with time on my hands I decided to use it.
Each 15ml tube is enough for one treatment, you have to wet your hair (do not shampoo) beforehand and place the tube in a glass (or cup) of hot water for one minute, twist off the plastic top and squeeze all of the oil onto your hair for approx. 1 minute, (don't worry it smells nice) I kept mine...
