Some children these day always want the latest gadgets, some kids are lucky enough, (or should I say spoilt enough), to get what they want, no questions asked. Most kids are lucky enough to have access to a computer, although some don’t, and a lot of children have there own laptop, which are really personal. But, if you’re anything like me, then you may be a little concerned about a child using a rather expensive piece of equipment in the knowledge that one bad tantrum will result in computer carnage all over the floor. Anyway, my youngest daughter had been nagging me for a while for her own laptop, just because her older sister had one, but I kept resisting due to the fact that I felt she was a little too young to have one, for now. So when I came across a nice little laptop look alike at a reasonable price I thought why not get it for her to see if she manages to break it with-in a week, (this is the girl who broke a ’tonka-toy truck whilst playing with it, there were tears everywhere from her little friend when he realised what she had done).
So for all those people who have a laptop and are always being harassed by there kids to have a go, even if they have access to family a desk top, then I have come across a rather nice little unit which may help with the fascination of the forbidden laptop. The item in question is by the clever boffins at Vtech and comes in two colours, pink, which I chose, and black. ** What do you get…

It’s educational benefits are vast, whilst also entertaining at the same time, which is good as your child will not become bored. It has Key stage I French, English, Maths, Logic, geography, science and history which is great for boosting those little grey cells and feeling more confident in class. There is just so much that this little unit has to offer, all aimed at educating by means of fun, which is simply fantastic.
** NOTE…
It does need 4 AA batteries which do tend to drain in no time at all so I do advise purchasing an adapter for around £9.00, which will save you dosh in the long run.
** MY OPINION….
When I had attached the detachable monitor and opened it up I was pleasantly surprised at how it looked, with its pink casing, (also comes in black), its look-alike ‘touchpad’ and qwerty keyboard, the little detachable mouse clicking into the right side. When we first fired this up my daughter and I spent hours on it, getting used to the many different things that it had to offer, even then there was still a lot we are still discovering now. Even my eldest daughter stuck her nose in, wanting to see what all the fuss was about, quite impressed by the v-tech slim pad, (and believe me, it takes a lot to impress my eldest daughter thanks to all the crap she watches on the television).
The good size viewable monitor screen filling over half the top section, although seeming a little on the dark side. The touchpad itself is surrounded by a silver frame, the top section acting as the mouse buttons, all looking very neat and tidy. As you can see as soon as you look at it it is supposed to imitate a real laptop and it does quite a good job doing so, so if your child is like my youngest, always trying to use your laptop whilst your working on it, then they will be quite impressed by this little look-alike.
It looks solid enough and is very robust, trust me, my youngest daughter is a little heavy handed and has certainly put this to the test and it is still up and running, even the buttons are all still in the right places. The additional cartridges slotting into the side of the monitor unit, a little like a USB connection only bigger, giving the slim-pad an extra lease of life.
The volume level is very good so you will not miss any audio coming from the built in speakers, which is imperative if your kids are trying to learn something like a new language.
For me it is money well spent as you get so much educational material in one small space, helping you and your child learn together whilst having fun at the same time, Isn’t bonding a wonderful thing?
If you are interested in an educational device which disguises itself inside entertaining fun then get your hands on this unit as this does the very thing. I managed to get the pink one for just over forty five quid, which was a steal as they sell for around the £70.00 mark in some shops, and I am so glad I did as this has not only managed to keep my daughter away from my laptop but has also kept her quiet for hours on end whilst slyly educating her without her even realising. My only regret is that I didn’t put it away for her for Christmas as it would have made a cracking present for her to open on Christmas day, so now I have to find something else for her to unwrap.
The age stated for this slim pad is around 8 years old but I do feel that it can swing a little below under adult supervision as there is just so many things that it offers in the way of fun and entertainment.
My only downside on this product, apart from the draining of the battery life, is that for some reason v-tech neglected to add a backlight on the screen so the screen can be a little dark sometimes, although nothing that spoils the product itself, but a brighter screen would have been a bonus.
