Since the birth of my son in 2006 V-Tech have become one of my preferred manufacturer of toys. I started the path to motherhood firmly of the opinion that toys should be traditional, require and encourage creative play and should certainly not "play with themselves". A few gifts and conversations with other mothers and much of that was to change. V-Tech proved to me that electronic toys are not all bad and that creative play is still possible with toys that have batteries.
The V-Tech walker is a take on the traditional brick trolley designed to help and encourage young babies to find their feet and to make adventures with their new-found freedom. However, the walker goes one step further and includes an interactive front section that's designed to teach basic movements, colours, letters and numbers.
We first acquired the walker when my son was about 7 months old. He could stand and pull himself up on furniture but had made no attempt to try and walk. Having seen how much my niece, three months older than my son, enjoyed the same walker we decided to bite the bullet and can honestly say that we have no regrets.
At first my son would just stand up with the aid of the walker but soon he discovered that it gave him a new mobility and he would travel across the room. His ability to steer was non-existent (and in fact remained this way until long after he could walk unaided) but we had great fun going backwards and forwards as far as a straight line would carry him.
Undoubtedly the walker gave my son confidence to move away from me, whether it helped him walk any earlier is impossible to say.
Nine months on, however, we're still getting enjoyment out of this toy. My son's been walking for 7 months but will still, occasionally take the walker for a spin round the house. He can even steer it now! The thing that keeps his attention though is the interactive front.
There are two "modes" of interactive play, a musical mode and a teaching mode. Modes are selected by a turn of the butterfly making selection of the mode easy for baby but pretty much uncontrollable for the parent. To my mind this doesn't matter but for some it may be a problem.
Piano keys at the base of the unit will teach either letters and words (apple, ball, car, dog and elephant) or play notes. Musically the notes are tones apart and do sound quite good. Shapes (with associated numbers and colours) and twisting cog wheels add to the interest. The keys will also flash with the music adding interest for the younger child.
One of the features of the toy that I really don't understand is the inclusion of a telephone. This seems to serve no purpose other than the fact that the unit says "well done" if you manage to put the telephone back on its cradle. This is easier said than done. For one the unit is a little too vertical. For two the cradle isn't really deep enough to accept the phone onto it with anything less than about 95% accuracy. At 16 months my son has just learned to put it on most of the time and I am aware that other children have had similar issues. The telephone also has a tendency to fall off if the walker is knocked against walls or furniture.
A feature that is underused by us at the moment is the "puppy says" game. Along the lines of "Simon says" the puppy asks you to clap your hands, nod your head and other simple actions. At present the timing of this is too fast for my son to understand on one call and respond before the next. However, I do think that this will come into its own in time.
The unit runs on 3 AA batteries and has two volume levels. It turns itself off if not touched for a couple of minutes (politely saying "bye bye" as it does so). Battery life is good and we've probably had in excess of 6 months' use out of each set (rechargeables).
The music on the unit is good. There are only 8 short tunes but they offer something a little different from the normal electronic offerings and are in more of a dancey-style. I'll often find my son setting a tune off (by pressing one of the shaped buttons) and then dancing to the music. Very cute!
We have found the walker to be very sturdy and well constructed. It's taken some knocks! I was worried about any walker tipping but we've had no accidents. I like the fact that the interactive section is detachable from the front of the walker. This means that you could buy the walker for a younger baby and they could still have enjoyment from the front part. Similarly if a child starts to show less interest in using the walker as a walker once they can walk the unit is still capable of being used independently.
The voices on the unit are English (rather than the computerised American accents that are commonplace on electronic toys) and this, for me, is a plus.
From being a walker sceptic I'm a walker convert and would thoroughly recommend this. We've had months and months of use from it and I'm sure it'll continue to be a favourite for a few more to come. I'd suggest that it's suitable from about 6 months but even younger babies might get some use, particularly if they can sit unaided. This toy has so much to offer that I think most children will find a feature that they particularly like. Motor skills, language skills and discovery skills are all taxed by this toy and months of fun will ensue.
Advantages: great price for a great product Disadvantages: none
Vtech First Steps Baby Walker
Jack is going to be a genius and I think it's all thanks to me buying up toys that are too advanced for him from an early stage. He is now three months old but I bought this vetch baby walker when he was only a matter of weeks. I am a big kid at heart and I couldn't wait to get most of theses toys for myself never mind jack!
I bought this baby walker from Amazon with the use of some more vouchers I had accumulated ... ...post and packaging. It arrived in just over a week and I couldn't wait to start playing and see what Jack thought.
Now it is meant for ages from 6 months and as Jack was only a few weeks old he pretty much screamed the house down when I put it in front of him and he saw all the flashing lights and lots of sounds. How ever my boyfriend could hardly tear me away from it. Now Jack is a few months older he does seem far more interested in it. The good ...

Advantages: Sturdy, educational, fun Disadvantages: - - -
We bought this for the twins last christmas because although they were nearly 16months old neither of them were walking so we thought this may help them a bit.
--- What it does ---
Obviously this is a baby walker so it helps support your baby when it is starting to walk but the walker also has a removable panel on the front for your child to play with that has different activities and has lights and plays music.
The removable panel has 2 different ... ...puppy barks and a female voice says: 'hello baby' then sings 'hello puppy calling do you want to play with me, lets have fun together while you learn your ABC'
- PUPPY. When you press the puppy it says 'lets play puppy says, puppy says lets wiggle/clap your hands/stomp your feet' This is basically a simon says game. - BUTTERFLY. The butterfly's function is to switch modes from alphabet/numbers to music. To do this you turn the butterfly's wing. ...

Advantages: Sturdy walker, with a fun educational toy attachment Disadvantages: The detachable phone thats detached & under the sofa for several days!
...I came accross the vtech walker on Ebay. It looked fun & a great aid to help him toddle as he hadnt started to walk. I managed to win one at a stupid price of 99p, yep 99p, although it cost about £10 P&P, but it was still a bargain. It was used, a few times said the ad & sure enough it was perfect, still with the box & the phone was in the wrapper, the wheels werent marked, so a bargain was had.
Now as you can see from the picture, as well as being ... ...it for any young child/toddler, Vtech say from 6 Months & I would have to agree with that.
The technical bit.
Sturdy design to support and nurture your baby's first steps
Detachable learning centre packed with activities
Shapes and light-up musical keys introduce letters, words, numbers, animals, colours, sung songs and melodies
Moving butterfly, discs and rollers develop manipulative skills plus a rattling role-play phone
Textured wheels, ...

Advantages: Lots of different activities; Colourful; Good price Disadvantages: Walker moves when baby is playing with activity buttons
...exactly why we chose the Vtech baby walker, although it met our price criteria and looked like it had lots of different activities on it to keep Ellie amused.
The baby walker was easy to assemble. It consists of a handled frame on wheels, which enables your baby to walk and push the frame along. At the bottom of the frame are three, colourful spinning rollers, which have beads and rattly bits inside that make nice sounds when they spin.
There is ... ...I would definitely choose the vtech walker again. It has lots of different activities to stimulate babies and toddlers (suitable I would say from 6 months of age), it is bright and colourful and I'm sure Ellie will start to use the walking frame more now as she is beginning to stand more confidently with the aid of furniture and when holding hands. At just £21.97 (Argos catalogue price), I feel that the Vtech walker is good value for money also. ...

Advantages: Cheap, durable, loads of learning outcomes. Disadvantages: Flimsy butterfly wing, detachable phone that keeps getting lost.
I bought one of these walkers from Argos for just over £20 about a year ago for my son who has used it loads so I think it deserves a mention:-

The walker itself – Plastic red handle and wheels with a yellow and blue base
White Front Panel which includes:-
A butterfly with a wing that you can flip – When flipped to the left the front panel will go in to learning mode where any button that is pressed will announce a letter, number ... ...revert to sound mode where buttons will play either a note or a musical tune.
Four buttons with shapes – Used to identify different shapes, numbers, colours and play different types of music (one example being a rock n roll tune)
Three Turning Wheels – There is a handle on one wheel which will turn the other two as in a cog system
Five buttons with different colours - Depending on the mode can be pressed to play a note, animal sound or identify ...

My daughter was crawling and pulling herself up in time for christmas so I wanted something for her that she could hold onto and start pushing around, so off i went in search of something that would do the job.
When I came across the v-techfirststeps plus babywalker, I had to have it, it seemed perfect and was just what i was loking for.
Why I was convinced this was the one
1) It was a walker and that was what Ii was loking for
2) It came with a removable (educational) activity board
3) Bright and colourful unlike some Ii have seen
4) Folds down and is easy to carry around so perfect for taking to grannys house for the day.

While cleaning out our attic over the weekend, I came across a box of old toys that our daughter Gemma had outgrown. I?d stored them up there ready for when our second child was old enough to use them and that time was now. Among the box of goodies was a V-TechFirstSteps Plus Walker, which we?d given Gemma for her first Christmas. Although she had a sit-in babywalker, which enabled her to stand on her feet and giving her extra mobility, I felt that this was cheating her of taking her firststeps on her own. I felt that this walker would give her the confidence to try walking unaided so I went out and bought it.
What instantly attracted me to this particular walker was the name. There were so many walkers out there the same, but this was a name that I?d grown up with. V-Tech is a well-known company who specialise in ...
