I was lucky enough to have my 1.2 Urban Fox bought for me straight from the dealership. My family and I had spent some time searching round each of the manufacturers to find the perfect small car before I passed my driving test. We chose Volkswagen as our previous experience with their cars is very good. They have a reputation for being very good value for money and being very reliable. The salesperson at the dealership was very good, and gave us a very good price for the car that we were trading in. I chose my fox in bright red, just like my very first bicycle. When I received the car, I was overjoyed. It's nippy, efficient, fun and I'll regret leaving it behind when I leave home to go to university. The Fox has been brilliant since I had it over a year ago, only a couple of minor faults which were put right in a service. It's perfect for driving short distances, but also copes well on longer distance journeys - many of which I experienced when visiting universities all across the country. It's deceptively large inside - from the outside it looks tiny, but as one of my friends exclaimed - "It's like a tardis in here!". The boot space also isn't too bad for a car of its size - as a family of musicians we manage to fit 2 trumpets, and a trombone into the boot, and it would fit a good amount of shopping in too. One problem that I did have however was the lack of a third back seat. On several occasions I needed to carry more passengers, but this wasn't possible as the middle seat is occupied by a plastic cup holder - which in itself isn't fantastic.
Specifications
There are two main models of the Fox - The Fox and the Urban Fox. The Urban fox has several Optional extra's equipped that the normal Fox doesn't have - Central Locking, Electric Windows, Tip-and slide seats, colour coded bumpers are the main ones. When picking my car these were features which I desired, and that is why I picked an Urban Fox. There is then a choice between 2 engines: - 1.2 Litre, 55PS, 5 Speed Manual Petrol - 1.4 Litre, 75PS, 5 Speed Manual Petrol
There is then a choice between having standard trim wheels, or Volkswagen 'Piranha' Alloy wheels coming at a premium of £570. The Fox comes in 8 different shades of paint to choose from: - Uranium Grey - Tornado Red - Indian Blue - Sunshine Yellow - Black - Reflex Silver - Indigo Blue - Diamond Black
Many of these colours look very good on the Fox.
Price
The Volkswagen Fox comes in baseline at price of £6845 with no additional extras for a new car. The Volkswagen Urban Fox comes in baseline at a price of £7505 with no additional extras.
Advantages
- With the economy the way it is, the Volkswagen Fox is a very cheap new car, even compared with other small car manufacturers. With the government introducing the scrappage scheme, the price on a new fox will be achievable by many more people. - Volkswagens tend to hold their value quite well due to being very good quality, long lasting and reliable cars. - The fox is a very fun car to drive. - The fox is a very good looking small car. - As the Fox hasn't been around for very long, there are not many on the roads and you will have something different to a lot of people.
Disadvantages
- It is a small car, so if you need your car to carry people it may be wise to purchase a larger one. - Can't think of any more!
Advantages: Cheap, Easy to drive/park, Good storage for small car, Disadvantages: Cheap looking interior, bit noisy over 40mph.
After my 1987 Polo gave up on me I purchased this car brand new mainly due to the price. I have had this car for nearly a year now and have been very pleased with it.
I paid roughly about £6500 with a £1500 deposit and then £99 a month for the next 3 years and then pay off the remanding amount (or pay another deposit for another new car and continue with a similar scheme). This also includes free yearly service for the first 3 years and breakdown ... ...brand new car I though was not bad value. The model I purchased was the basic 1.2 version without central locking and Air conditioning which is about an extra £500 although I did get the matching colored bumpers for about an extra £60 which I thought really improved the look of the car. The driving position is nice and high and the steering wheel can be adjusted which is a very nice feature for a budget car. The storage of the boot is excellent. ...

Advantages: Nippy, responsive, economical on fuel about town. Cheaper car tax £115 Disadvantages: Hard to move back seats to increase boot space. No cigarette lighter
This is a cheap run around car with a VW engine - thus compared to the other "cheap" cars I think it will hold its price better then a micra or a clio.
I've got the urban fox - the urban gives:
electric windows - fold down seats - and moveable seats which the normal fox doesn't have - well worth the extra £600. I didn't bother with Air con as that is another £1000 and takes it out of the cheap car bracket.
The seats in this are slightly higher ... ...get in and out especially if you are a bit older and have achey legs.
No cigarette lighter - basic cd/radio - works fine. Cup holders are moulded into the plastic next to the gear stick but will take a large coffee. Also a cup holder in each of the doors.
I like it - it is basic with just enough "luxury essentials - electric windows, cup holder :)" to feel better then a cheap car and it is fun to drive. ...

Advantages: Nice looking car, great for young and old Disadvantages: Serious lack of availability of parts. Thought I was buying into VW superiority!
...the same sort of problem. Volkswagen did refund all our money but the whole experience was stressfull and we ended up paying for extra driving lessons as my daughter had no car to practise with. Nice car-shame about the lack of availability of spare parts. Now still looking for another suitable car as she has passed her driving test-no thanks to VW!! ...

Advantages: spacious, cheap to buy, nippy, easy to park and turn round. Disadvantages: short seats, noisy engine, not as economical on petrol, strictly a 4 seater!
I bought a Fox in April this year and so have 9 months motoring experience with it. The first thing that I would say is that in the main this is quite a good budget car to buy if you are not too tall. I'm not as convinced that it is as good on petrol as other cars in it's class having changed a Fiat Punto for it I found that the Fox was slightly worse in practice on petrol (or so it seems).
With regard to space, the seating position is quite upright ... ...both youself and the back seat passengers. It really is a bit like a tardis this little car. Passengers have always been surprised at the amount of leg room and head room it offers. The only down side - and I think it is a big down side - is that it is striclty a four seater. There is no room in the back for a middle seat passenger as there might be in other cars of this class. For me, this will probably put me off buying another. The other thing ...
