From the simple, old-fashioned functionality of the lower-powered diesel and petrol engines to the 197bhp GTi, which is nothing short of an icon, the Golf has the competition on the back foot.
Whichever the best selling Golf model is, it's probably a diesel, and although it's on the sporty side the GT Sport TDi deserves to fly off the forecourts.
The fifth-generation Golf's driving position is just about perfect. It's just as comfortable trundling through Carlisle's rush hour as it is darting from corner to corner along a tight Lake District B-road.
GT-Sport specification is a step below the fabled GTi, featuring sports seats, full electric windows and mirrors, silver detailing around key cockpit areas and special alloy wheels. The test car had an optional, and quite stunning, 18in set fitted which increases road noise over the standard 17in arrangement but they actually improve the ride, giving it a slightly more controlled feel particularly along the rougher sections of the A595.
Older drivers who still like sporty seats and leather trimmings but don't want the sometimes-tiring nature of cars with stiff suspension would be well suited to the GT Sport.
There is a choice of two engines, both of which are available in two power levels. Volkswagen has kept things simple, offering a diesel with either 138bhp or 168bhp alongside a petrol option with the same 138bhp or 168bhp choice.
Most buyers choose the less powerful motors for their better economy and lower list prices, but the 138bhp diesel tested here is definitely not short on real-world performance.
Many testers have criticised the 2.0 litre oil-burner, but in the Golf it seems considerably less coarse than in many of the cars the engine has been donated to since its release. In fact, it makes a pretty nice noise for a diesel.
Although below 1500rpm there's very little power available, as soon as the turbo boost arrives it pulls very strongly in the lower half of the six-speed gearbox, and still manages a convincing stab at fourth and fifth. Sixth is an ideal cruising gear, letting the GT pull a lazy but economical 1600rpm on A-road cruises.
Its steering is well-weighted if not especially precise, and combined with an ideally-positioned gearstick the GT Sport is good fun to drive, particularly considering it's a diesel.
Treats for all occupants include Climatic air-conditioning and a CD player, while the driver also gets a multi-function trip computer showing every piece of data you could need. There is a full compliment of airbags including front, side and curtain units.
It's a pity that VW hasn't included cruise control though. At a list price of over £18,000 you'd be forgiven for expecting it, and it would be a welcome addition on the diesel in particular.
An internal difference between diesel and petrol-powered GT Sports is that the diesels do away with the petrol models' boost gauge, replacing it with an engine temperature dial. Otherwise the interior trim is the same whichever you choose, and it's just down to you to pick options.
Even though GT Sport models are a cut above the popular Match-specified cars in terms of looks at least, they're likely to be used for just as many shopping trips. No problem, because the MkV Golf's boot is more than big enough for the weekly supermarket sweep.
The Golf range is huge, and however you drive there's likely to be a model to suit. The GT Sport is near the top of the tree in both specification and price, but it combines style and substance brilliantly.
Advantages: Its Quick, Smart Looking and Diesel so relatively economical particularly useful with the current oil costs. Disadvantages: A bit small for the 2.4 kids especially if they're still in car seats.
I inherited my Golf from a departee in the company i work for. They had very nicely given me the choice of the Golf or a Megane and so, after a very thoughtful and agonising descision process lasting all of 33 seconds, i went for the Golf. My usual choice of car has always been a Rover and always the bigger variety such as the 820 or 75 so this little thing had a lot to live up to in the gadgets, luxuries and performance capability and so far i have ... ...the car is quite stunning really, it is a head turner (or it was when i recieved it all nice and shiny ) There's not a great deal of difference between it and a million other Golfs on the road but the new model has the boot opener as part of the badge so you can get a little bit of pleasure when passing an older version on the road that still has the extra door handle!
Inside - if you spend a lot of time in the car it is very comfortable, independant ...

Wow, what more can be said!!!
Started looking in Nov '05 to replace my rather worn Clio, my girlfriend of the time said try a Golf. I wanted Diesel, economic and lots of toys.
So off down to the local dealers it was. They let me play in a brand new GT TDi for the afternoon and said you won't want any thing else. They were right!! I fell in love with it there and then, wanted one straight away. That was it, signed the paper work, added more toys ... ...for delivery.
Along came the 1st March, and along came the new car. In Silver, 2.0l Diesel, GT TDi, Sat Nav, Phone Prep, 6 CD Changer, 2 Zone, High Line Computer to name just a few options. I picked it up, and even today that feels like only yesterday that it was delivered!
The car is awesome, regularly doing 55+ to the gallon. In the 3 months i've had it i've done almost 10,000 miles and have loved every minute of it. Nothing has gone wrong with ...

Golf GT TDI 170bhp 5 door with Charleston wheel upgrade.
Looks
Classically stylish with a modern twist. A gorgeous looking car that is understated enough not to get vandalised for being too flash, but you wouldnt feel out of place turning up at a swanky hotel. The wheel upgrade is well worth the £600 extra for the 18 inches as your likely to find resale easier because of this, plus they look great.
Performance
More 'torque' than Jonothan Ross, ... ...R32!! Very smooth at cruising speeds and great around the town, unleash it on an open country road and it will handle like a GTI.
Pricing
Slighty more than it's competitors, however what you pay at the frontend you will more than return at the backend with excellent residuals. Try for an ex demo as your likely to get a little extra spec, but here are cracking deals on new to be had out there with main dealers. Avoid the supermarkets, your likely ...

Quick review of Volkswagen Golf 2.0 TDI
The best car i have every bought, its fantastic. The interior is very sleek and clean looking its 6 speed box took a bit getting used to but after i mattered it theres no stopping me. It has 130bhp and although 3 door it is very spacious. I recently put a set of 19inc alloys on it and it handles a lot better than before. I use the car daily with the kids and they often love to go to sea side and go sight seeing at the weekend we put half tank of diesel in it we went for about 200miles it saves us a lot of money. Compared to what we were like trying to constantly fill up the tank in our other car we had. We think it is a fantastic family car for all types of roads and it is very economical and easy on the eye.
Good work Volkswagen. ...

Six months on heres my review of my Golf 2.0 GT TDI
In June 05 I started looking for my next car, out came all the mags, searched the web and gathered all information. I was looking for a medium sized hatchback big enough to seat 5 if required, my wife said go for a Golf, but being a man I had to search through every alternative first, eventualy came to my senses and a Golf it was.
Now next problem how much can I save buying one, being a canny ... ...and checking the web, Drive the Deal came out trumps, under cut dealers by over £500 and had the car I wanted.
My Tornado red 2.0 GT TDI arrived gleaming on the 1st September delivered by transporter from Ventura Park in Tamworth all the way to Edinburgh on time and as a new car should be fault free and shining in the late summer sun.
My dealings with Drive the Deal and Ventura park were polite, professional and throughly recommended, the car arrived ...

Advantages: great savings to be had Disadvantages: have to be flexible with what you are looking for
I went to www.motorpoint.co.uk after checking out target prices in What Car? magazine and then approaching a main dealer. Unfortunately the main dealer couldn't match my price so I decided to look elsewhere. After doing a bit of internet research I found several 'car supermarket' sites and compared prices on the model that I was interested in - a VWGolf2.0 GT TDI 5dr. I later rang Motorpoint's customer call centre and it turned out that I would save over £2k on the price that I was quoted at the dealership, they also had the car that I wanted in stock .
With this in mind I arranged to travel down to Derby to view the car. The spec was great and as a parallel import from Germany everything was as you'd expect from a UK vehicle. I placed a deposit there and then.
Ask the right questions up front, make sure you know what you are ...

The New Leon FR shares similar styling to the concept Leon, deeper bigger front valance, deep rear valance with black rear diffuser, not to mention the twin chrome exhaust, and exclusive 17" alloys with the option of 18" (designed for the New Cupra) alloys. For power Seat has chose the 2.0 FSI turbo sourced from the VWGolf GTI and the new 2.0TDI 170 which debuted in the Altea FR. So now you can buy a cheaper version of the Golf GTI and there is a diesel version too, cool or what? Well not quite. You see being a VAG group engine obviously VW, Audi and Skoda will of course no doubt have access to the TDI engine as well, so I wasn't surprised to hear that Skoda are planning on using it for a diesel version of the Octavia VRS, and VW are putting the engine (along with their rather bizarre 1.4 170ps TSI engine) into ...
