I recently spent all of my student loan and years of savings on a flashy Golf Convertible 1.6. The car has "wowed" my friends and collegues and has made me a very proud owner.
I bought my car second hand about 3 months ago at £8,800, and it was a steal at that price. But what is is about the Golf Cabriolet that makes it so desirable?
This particular model of Golf comes in a variety of colours, mine is black, but it also comes in silver, green and royal blue. Although black is a neutral colour, and has never really become unfashionable, it does tend to show the dirt very quickly which is a disadvantage. More frequent washing is then required so it's probably best to become good friends with a car washer! The lights and bumpers are colour coded and although the lights are not halogen, they certainly look very good. The mirrors are electric, so a little more expensive to replace when you knock them (as I found out recently!!) and the alloys provide for excellent handling.
The design of the material is neutral, but will depend on what colour the exterior is. The sound system is very powerful which is especially useful when you have the roof down and it becomes a bit more noisy. Considering it is a convertible, the car provides a decent amount of space in the back, even so, it would not be recommended for people with long legs! The boot is spacious and all carpeted, giving a more professional feel. Unfortunately, air con does not come as standard on this model as it is with the Avantgarde, which is another disadvantage. Having air con is particularly useful, especially in light of the recent weather we have had (hot, but rainy). However, to combat the heat, electric windows are fitted, which are always useful. Furthermore, the speed dials shine a cool blue when the lights are on and the needles are luminous pink!! Wow!!
In comparison to the old car (Peugeot 106) this car's performance is outstanding. The alloys provide excellent grip to the road and the sports suspension works a treat around roundabouts! The power steering also makes life a lot easier when trying to reverse park.
An added bonus of this vehicle is its rareity. I have had this car for nearly 3 months, and I do a lot of driving, and I have only ever seen one model like mine in the same colour. This will add to your feeling of pride and being special, as it has done me!
As nice as these cars are, they don't come too cheaply. You would be looking to pay round about £10,000 for an A1 condition 1999 model, but if you have that sort of money, I'd say it was an excellent buy.
~:Well, it's a convertible??:~
Lastly, I have to state that there isn't anything not to like about this car. The power hood with matching leather cover is a must for anyone young as it's not too crap and not too flashy. (You always see the flashy cars driven by rich old men so it's nice to kind of think you have as much money as them!!)The fuel consumption is also reasonable, but beware, you can fill the tank up with £40 of petrol easy!
From a safety perspective, having a convertible is probably not too good with kids of dogs who I can easily imagine leaping out at high speeds - not good. Other than that, once in the car, you feel surrounded by the well built body and thick hood.
These are just a few other bits which I couldn't fit in anywhere else! The car comes with an alarm as standard, but I had a Clifford fitted on mine so that I could get extra features so I'm not too familiar with the VW one.
A disadvantage of having a convertible with the roof down in the summer is the amount of flies and dirt that go in your eyes! Therefore, it is necessary to provide good protection. Invest in a good pair of car sunglasses and wear them whenever you have the roof down (I presume this applies in all convertibles!)
In conclusion, this inspirational car is a definite for anyone considering buying a VW III Cabriolet due to its sleek looks, excellent handling, and best of all, the fact that no one else will have one!
