Advantages solid - handling, reliability, looks
Disadvantages needs a bit more oooomph
I have been driving my GTI for a year now and am more than satisfied with its reliability and build quality, the car is solid and has that comfirting made by germans feel to it. i have only had one annoying little problem with the alarm going off all the time, which VW fixed.
the handling is very honest i like the hard suspension there is very little body roll and the steering is very direct. I am still to come even a little unstuck cornering and I have been trying.
The only gripe would be on the acceleration. For a small car labelled GTI you expect nippyness but initial acceleration proves a little dissapointing, the car feels a little heavy. Mid range 50-80 etc is not bad as with the 2.0 litre engine it has plenty of power in 3rd an 4th. The overall performance feels more akin to a large tourer than a nimble pocket rocket. If you want a good looking, solid, reliable motor look no further if you want a pocket rocket go for an Alfa 147, or Leon Cupra R...

Good review. I wouldn't mind checking out the VW Golf as my next choice of car! Thanks for the review! Sammie. x

I was after one of these as they met my budget but I heard/read about the car didnt quite live up to its Gti tag. So I decided to break the bank and go for the 1.8 turbo instead. That was 3 years ago and I still love it now, a truly awesome car.
