I have recently been given golf mark 1, 3 door hatchback , by an old neighbour who can no longer drive due to illness. It was locked away in his garage and was only ever used for shopping trips and bingo hall runs.

its a Blue 1983 - Y reg, with 3 doors and a measly 1.1 litre petrol engine. I spent the last 2 weeks cleaning the car up and checking all the mechanics and everything seems to be running fine after a good service. What amazes me is that the car is so quick and nippy just from having a small engine but on further investigation I found out the car weighs only 500Kg. I can also fit in the car incredibly well even though I am over 6 foot in height. It obviously dosent have all the safety features and reinforced bodywork that modern day cars have and has barely no real technology, not even power steering. This is exactly what makes it great fun to drive and you dont have to worry about what the onboard computer is doing like on modern cars which practically drive themselves.

I have grown to like the car because of its simplicity, reliability and practicality. Looking at the paperwork for the car it has done 340,000 miles so far on the original 1.1litre engine and dosen't blow any strange coloured exhaust fumes, which I think is an incredible achievement for a car of its era. This reliability is what has made VolksWagon what it is today, a sign of quality workmanship not just on this Golf but all the golf's there ever were as well as the other fleet of cars they produced like the passat, beetle and camper vans that still come to the surfing hot spots around the country. I think the Golf mark 1 was one of the biggest icons of the early 80s.

I have sold the car on Ebay for £1700. I was only expecting around £300 but the ebay bidding went mad from the minute I put it on. An enthiusiast purchased the car and is going to spend a fortune on it customising it and promised to get the car on the front cover of Max Power (boy racer magazine).

I think this is a bit of a shame really but he is sending me progress photos and it already looks great just with a respray and new wheels and tyres.

All the proceeds from the sale went back to my neighbour to spend as he wished and he nearly collapsed when I showed him how much he had !!!!!! £1700 Amazing, but I suppose the car is now a collectable.

I had hear that a factory in South Africa or South America has now bought the licence to make the cars there and they seem to be selling really well. The only down side is that the car only has drum brakes which dont stop you very quickly compared with disk brakes. This is a slight problem as the car is so quick and you have to plan stopping a few seconds before you hit the brake.

All I can say is I hope my car lasts as loong as the golf and still has the looks after 22 years!!!!!!!

what a great motor.

My tractor isn't a tractor anymore
Car review of VW Golf I C by PHaNToMoFTHeDaRK

Advantages: It's almost an oldtimer ;)
Disadvantages: Technical not the best.. but it's an old car.. what can you do against..

Tractor? Why tractor? This story is about a Golf, isn't it? Yes, it is, you're not wrong if thoughts like those are running through your head. But why tractor? You'll get to know it soon enough ;) It was rou7nd about six months ago. Back from holiday I wished to use my drivers license.. but therefore I needed a car. Because my father ownes a Golf 1 since many many years (it's built in 1983), which was driven some time by my aunt, he wanted me to ...
...was standing in front of our door.. and also the rest of my family. The first drive with it was already planned, but before it started, I had to drive my family to the next ice-café (I'm not sure, if this word exists). Because we were 7 persons, we needed to drive with two cars. I was driving at first with my aunt and his smallest son, the rest in the other car behind me... or not? Somewhere we've lost them, but it wasn't so bad ;) After carefully ... Read review

VW Golf. German, but good!!!
Car review of VW Golf I C by glasgowcitybusdriver

Advantages: Good looks, solid build, cheap insurance
Disadvantages: Flat spot in accelaration, basic interior

A few years ago my step-sister had a 1.3 Golf on a 'C' plate and had decided to sell it as she had another car. It had only done 70-odd thousand miles and I took her up on her offer. £75!!!! The bodywork on theses old trojans is excellent. It had a little rust here and there but you could have set off a nuke next to it and it would have survived!! The trim was a 'CL' model which really didnt give you any luxuries apart from intermittent windscreen ...
...on the door panels had an argument with the door and began to fall off. Easily repairable with some material adhesive.Seat covering is hard wearing and I swear you could grate cheese on it. The main problem i had with my golf was the 1.3, 8 valve engine. The distributor cap which controls the engines sparks, was in too exposed a place, and being open to water, made the engine misfire and had to be replaced regularly. pretty cheap at a fiver a whip, ...
