Advantages Spec , handling , performance, economy, safety , Looks !

Disadvantages A bit pricey, diesel 1.9 is an old design of engine ( though pulls very well)

1.9TDI Match 5 door . New Sept 07.
Sarah's car , but a few observations from me...We are absolutely delighted!
I own a recent BMW 530DSE and yet in some ways the Golf is more fun to drive! We didn't expect this. Highlights of the recent "Match" spec include an ipod interface ( holds it and charges it too, not just the poor flappy lead that BMW give you !) . Attractive easy to clean alloy wheels, powerful air con, sports seats , 4 electric windows, all inc in the standard spec. All you need to pay for is metallic paint. We bought from Listers Stratford on Avon who are outstanding.

Child seats fit well in the back and the front air bag can be turned off with the key when necessary. There is heaps of rear room even with six footers in the front seats.
The Golf is a bit rattly and noisy when cold but rewards by returning 47 mpg when driven with some gusto. If you were gentle you could get even more. I think this is important with fuel at £1.05 a litre and further rises to come.I think it has 190lb/ft and certainly is better than the 1.6 FSI for "real world" driving conditions. Its plenty fast enough even with 4 adults and luggage aboard. I don't think you could say that about the 1.6FSI

To be honest the new Nissan Quashqai is a nicely packaged roomy product for those of you with children ... but the Golf is the best in class.
