OK, I could tell you about my nostalgic fondness for the old Beetle, reminisce about the Beetle my Mum drove me to school in 1972 and generally take a long-winded route to what you really want to know. So lets cut to the chase and get down to what's good, bad and ugly (or not) about VW's reincarnation of possibly the most iconic automobile of the last century.

What's Good About The New Beetle? Build quality is truly excellent. More so when considering the excellent value for money offered by even the basic package. VW has a deserved reputation for solidity, longevity and reliability - and it's all there in the new Beetle. Everything from the tight panel fit, to the pleasing chunkiness of switchgear and fittings to the smoothness of transmission and ride tells you this is a substantial car. What else can you buy for the money (my 1.6 cost £13k OTR with a load of extras) that matches it for presence, build, equipment and all-round performance? Not much is the answer, but I'll tell you what does at the end of this review. OK, the image. Is it a girlie car? Is it a toytown Noddy car? Is it a faddish retro warm-over? All curvy cuteness but with no real cajones! And I've gotta tell you, that's what my blokey pals first said when I told them what I'd traded in my MGF for. Well I think the shape is as lovingly reminiscent of the original as it is strikingly modern. And sitting purposefully on its ample 205" tyres and (as an extras on my Beetle) 5 spoke VW alloys and roof-bars, make no mistake this car looks far from fragile. And you know what? People smile when they see the Beetle, kids especially. So it's a car with character which blokes want just as much as girls. The Beetle is all grown-up with nothing 'Toys- R-Us' about it and the style is a future-proofed classic. From the driver's seat, the New Bug is extremely spacious with considerable headroom and controls laid out in a highly ergonomic fashion. Especially nice touches are the power release boot and petrol flap which make a pleasingly satisfying zippy sound when opened [try it, you'll see what I mean]. Having adapted the current Mark 4 Golf running gear, and with four wide tyres at its extremities, the Beetle has an excellent grip on the road. It can be flung into corners with confidence. Performance from the 1.6 engine is adequate, although for those wanting more grunt the new range of turbo, V5 and TDI engines will hustle the Bug along at high speed. Were it available at the time of purchase I would have opted for the TDI, which I reckon will combine excellent economy with performance to match. This model is available in the UK from January 2002. VW has a class leading warranty and recovery package for peace of mind. With the new model coming onto the second hand market there are many bargains, and residuals appear relatively good. However, if buying your Beetle new, you will find a massive array of options from paint finishes to sound system and now engine choices. My Beetle came with the factory fitted winter pack which includes heated washers, mirrors, and even heated seats- nice touch!
And now for The Bad:
The Beetle has a rear seat but don't expect adult passengers to travel long without bumping their heads off the sharply sloping roofline. The dashboard. It slopes away for an eternity- big enough to have a picnic on. Initially, this is highly disconcerting and of course makes judging distances when parking problematic. Performance from the 1.6 verges on the puny side of adequate. The engine is often found wanting in the top gears. VW have conveniently fitted an armrest between the driver and passenger seat. Great for resting your gear change hand when driving, but useless when trying to actually change down gears - it gets in the way. For a car that's tricky to park (reversing is also a challenge) VW have failed to fit protective strips on the large exposed door panels and on the colour coded plastic bumpers. For tight parking situations this is a must, so why don't manufacturers wise up? Despite my upgrading to a six changer CD unit (installed in the boot) the basic VW fit sound system is relatively poor and the speakers weak. There are speaker upgrades but you would expect a far better quality as standard. Fuel economy from the 1.6 engine is average. Disappointingly, though, there is no onboard fuel economy meter, which I had as standard in previous VW Golfs. Great for those of a parsimonious disposition. There are a number of LHD Beetles coming onto the second hand market in the UK. These were imported between 1998-99 before RHD models became available. Best avoid these cars as residuals are likely to be poor in the long run.
And the Ugly:
OK, I don't like the plastic wheel trims supplied with the basic 1.6, precisely why I upgraded to alloys. And I can take or leave the flower vase.
But apart from that, this ain't no Ugly Bug!
You want alternatives? One springs to mind- the new BMW Mini is well worth checking out, but that's another review!

The beetle is a popular face on the UK roads. And why not? It is attractive and funky looking. One thing I have learned is that you either love them or hate them
We have been fortunate to get hold of a 2004 model which had a few revisions up to the new model release this year. The main difference between our model and earlier models is the indicators ... ...on the clock when we picked it up and it cost us £8,995 not bad for a 2004 model in silver with headlight protectors, mudflaps and 15inch alloys.
The nitty gritty
The car may only be a 1.6 but it actually pulls the Beetle well. Granted the Beetle is no city car, being built on the Golf platform it is a lump but the 102ps engine seems to handle it well. I am however not so impressed with the economy out of 55 litres we seem to only get about 250 ...

Advantages: excellent quality and value, stylish good looks. Disadvantages: only 3 doors.
I've had my '02 1.6 beetle for almost 3 years, and from the moment I drove it home I've fully enjoyed my purchase.
I opted for the basic 1.6 model, but added alloys and a 6 cd auto changer. I wanted a very understated colour and went for black, a choice which I love and hate. When it's clean, I love looking at it, when it's dirty it looks dull and bland.
The interior trim is very hard waring and suitably smart, all the instruments have a very chunky ... ...road price of £11500.) I have not found the headroom in the back to be a problem, but my passengers are not big adults, just average size. It is only 4 seats, no central rear seat or belt.
The electric windows/mirrors/fuel lid/central locking/boot flip. are all standard features. I love the various little pockets for sunglasses, mobile or other articles. One point I really like is the lighted vanity mirror on the drivers sunvisor, ver handy! The ...

Advantages: A whole new experience. Original (stand Out from the Crowd). Cost of replacement parts. Buy it only if you can live with it's older design features. Disadvantages: Fuel economy Driving Position Safety
The Volkswagen type 1 better known as the Beetle. A two door four seater car with the engine in the boot! The engine came in several sizes, the range included the 1200 1300 1500 and 1600. The most common engine was the 1300 which came in two versions depending on year of manufacture.
I’ve had three VW Beetles all of them 1300 versions (I did put a 1500 engine into the first Beetle I had). I fell in love with the shape of the car and I suppose ... ...the cars were not particularly reliable(proably due to their age). Any major work on the engine was far easier with the engine removed from the car which, fortunately was a relatively simple task to do (the engine is fitted with four 17mm nuts to the gearbox).
The car is quite small inside, with two adults sat in the front your shoulders are almost touching. The first thing I noticed sat in the driving position was the fact that all the pedals are ...

Advantages: Looks, looks, reliability, driving experience and yes, looks Disadvantages: Practicality - but who cares?
...is assured.
Being a Volkswagen you expect the build quality to be good and it doesn't disappoint. The trim feels solid and secure and there are no rattles or shakes in any driving conditions. My commute takes in back roads, motorways and stop-start traffic and the car is pleasant to be in at all times. It is very quiet at motorway speeds and never feels like it is working hard. Reliability has been good so far with only one fault so far (see negatives).
... ...with this car. However, most of these are inherent in the car and should not be a surprise.
The boot is small. Very small. Probably not much bigger than a roadster! It will take a weeks grocery shopping, or a couple of small cases but being narrow and not very long you won't get a set of golf clubs or a pushchair in it. The back seat will fold down for bigger items but the slope of the rear window is also cramping.
The rear seat in this model isn't ...

Advantages: Cheap to maintain (can be done in your garage), has the image factor, fun to drive and be in Disadvantages: Very bouncy! Most Beetles only do 20-30mpg on a very good day.
It is not widely known, but the old shape Beetle can still be bought from a company called Beetles UK (www.beetles-uk.com). I, however, decided to go the route of buying a second-hand Beetle, last October, for 325 pounds. Once the restoration of the car was complete, I had ended up spending about 2500 pounds, which is about the amount you should expect to spend, no matter the initial price you buy the car for.
The VW Beetle is renowned for being ... ...that tune-ups and fixing things are simple enough to fix. It is not only the Beetle's image that makes it such a popular car forstudents: repairs are usually cheap due to the fact that they can be done at home. Don't expect luxury from a 20-30 year old car, though: the suspension will be unusually bouncy, the engine loud, and the instrument panel consists of a speedo, a fuel gauge, an indicator light, and two "panic lights", all in one round dial. ...
