We never used the Audi when we wanted to go down the motorway to see the relatives; the Passat gave us equal levels of comfort, better ride quality, and great fuel economy. The performance is adequate too, even for a petrol head like me - once you get the car up to speed on the motorway, it will sit there all day. In car entertainment is also great; the quality of the VW stereo is much better than the standard model in my Audi.
We recently moved house, we did about 4 trips with some extra things in the Passat; you can get a huge amount in; the rear seats fold down, unusual for a salon car, so that the already cavernous boot is transformed into an almost estate like space.
Space in the back for passengers is almost limo like, and they don't mind sitting there all day either.
You get the famous VW build quality; our car has now done 120,000 miles and you would never know, there are no rattles inside and that great diesel engine runs as strongly as ever.
No wonder VW did not change the design much for the facelifted model. The car was still class leading when it was upgraded. If I was to change the Passat I would go for a newer Passat - maybe the estate version this time!
Advantages: Great fuel economy, great looking, reliable Disadvantages: Less power than the 2 litre
I got this as my company car in July 2007, the 1.9 Passat TDI 2007 model. In my opinion this car is absolutely fantastic and has it all. Fuel efficient, great looking, good handling and available with tons of extra features. Inside the car is extremely spacious, the drivers area is adjustable to suit any driver. The boot is huge so extremely useful for travelling, or storing tools and materials for those diy projects! The 1.9 model has a surprisingly ... ...it makes up for that fact in fuel economy. I frequently drive long trips and can do over 700 miles on a full tank, gaining 50+ mpg on long journeys and 40-50 in urban driving.
This model has gone a long way to changing peoples opinions on the passat, before they used to be known as 'grandad' cars, however the new slick looks make it appeal to a much younger market.
Will definately stick to the Passat for my next company car, may go for a bit more ...

Advantages: Engine is a corker! Disadvantages: A few niggles. Not as pretty as an A4.
We have had our Passat (1.9TDi 1997) for over a year and have done 25k miles. We bought it with 91k on the clock.
I was attracted by it's rather understated yet still quite fresh design. This was my first diesel and I didn't quite know what to expect. The engine is the 110bhp version and I was very impressed with the overall performance. Not only was I achieving about 50mpg but the overtaking at motorway speeds was as good as any petrol salons that ... ...The door lock barrels fail. The previous owner has to replace them twice (£70 each inc fitting). Mine are on it's way out. If you have remote central locking then this should not be a problem.
Slight spots of rust on the inside of the door frame and on the B-posts of the doors. I was suprised with it being a VW especially as the areas didn't have any stone chips.
Replacement of the front steering and suspension bushes. Over the last year I have ...

Advantages: Comfortable, easy to drive, big, Climatronic. Disadvantages: Needs a bit of TLC now and again, image.
I have had a 1997 (B5) Passat TDI Sport for the past year and am very impressed! I bought the car with 160,000 miles on the clock and to date have added another 10,000 with no significant problems. This was my first diesel car and it has converted me to the foul smelling stuff, I love it. The average mpg for the year is 55 mpg, and on a 200 mile motorway run last week, I got 69.4 mpg (Friday PM, so average speed probably <70 mph). Even with diesel ... ...mile on fuel.
I am a huge fan of VWs, but they are not for everyone - you will almost certainly get some minor faults. I do not mind this as I like to do a bit of DIY on the car and my own servicing anyway. Common Passat faults I have had are problems with the door lock/electrics, engine coolant loss, sunroof not working. These are not much more than characteristics of the car and as long as it keep running, I will be happy.

Advantages: Spacious, frugal, good performance. Disadvantages: Looks aren't very exciting.
I drive a 2002 (52 plate) VW Passat 1.9 TDi 130bhp for work and it has been very reliable and dependable. The engine is by far the best bit about this car - over 40mpg even when driving swiftly and very quiet whether cruising on the motorway or driving around town.
The model i drive is reasonably well equipped - it has a good air conditioning system, electric mirrors, windows, sunroof etc. The only extra i would have added is a factory CD player.
... ...road holding is good for a car of this size and weight.
Interior is spacious enough to accomodate 4 adults comfortably - 5 at a push. The boot is also very spacious.
I have also driven the 115bhp model and would thoroughly recommend buying the 130bhp model insead. The fuel economy isn't noticably different yet the 130bhp model is far swifter when accelerating or overtaking and is more relaxed when cruising at motorway speeds. VW also have an efficient ...

Advantages: Great engine, Genuine 50+ mpg, Like new after 50,000 miles Disadvantages: VW reliability?, doesn't like roads with corners.
I've had my Passat S 130PDI saloon for nearly 3 years now, and in general it's been a good car.
I've consistently got 50+mpg from it (based on tank to tank mileages, not the over optimistic trip computer) - amazing for such a big car, with the added bonus of getting 600 miles between refills with some comfort. Anyone who does a lot of long journeys really ought to consider diesel.
I've done nearly 50,000 miles in mine, many with 3 kids in the back ... ...i'm pretty neglectful on the washing and valeting side. The back bench-style seat in this car is a must have in any family car . A rear seat with raised bits in the middle can lead to an uncomfortable ride for the 3rd passenger. We recently tried a new Honda Accord and rejected it it for this very reason. One really impressive thing about this car is the interior lighting. Everything is in complimentary blue and red hues - The first time you get ...

Advantages: Great solid reliable family car Disadvantages: It is very big
I picked this car as a company car, i currently work as an area sales manager and when i was going through the list of choices i felt this was the best one on the list.
The main reason i picked was i had a Passat before which was the old shape and it was a really good, comfortable and reliable family car. I always liked the old Passat but the new one is suberb its even better than the old one.
I do about 35000 miles per year and its really comfy on long journeys. It sits great on the motorway and performs well on A and B roads too. Its a solid car and it feels solid, i feel quite safe in it. The SE spec gives you a few more luxuries than the basic spec. Included in this is cruise control, all round electric windows, centre armrest and good looking alloy wheels.
I got the 1.9TDI diesel engine which has 105BHP and is quite nippy ...
Advantages: Comfort, Stylish, Fuel effiecient Disadvantages: Service Costs
I have had the 1.9TDI PD(130) now for 8 months, My first reason for purchasing the vehicle was to pull our family caravan- which it does with great ease. After 8 months the feelings toward sthis car have become a bit more passionate, the ride is so comfortable that the family can rest or even sleep on long journeys, there is no or very little external noise and it is truly a pleasure to drive. I travel 800 miles a week just commuting to and from work, the comfort is a godsend on my delicate back and therefore making driving to work a pleasure, even though my journey is 98% motorway i still managed to atain between 52% and 55% MPG. The downside is the service costs, luckily i have a friend who runs his own registered garage so i can lower my costs a bit, especially on a cam belt change at £560.00. Back to the positives, the interior is ...
Advantages: Big and Spacious. Surprisingly Cheap to Run. Occupant and Pedestrian Safety. Disadvantages: Awful Hand Brake. Poor Seats. Uninspiring to Drive. Poorly Equipped.
choice offers the best equation of performance and economy to specification??.
??but it is the 2.0TDi S that I am reviewing here, that missing "E" makes a big difference!
CIAO CATEGORY NOTE: There is no such model as the 1.9 130 TDi S - that was in the old body shape - the Ciao header photograph clearly shows the current car.
IN WHAT CAPACITY AM I REVIEWING THIS CAR?
I am reviewing this car as a curious fleet manager, who has driven several previous generation VolkswagenPassat models, but not until last June's Company Car in Action event, this current one.
The Passat is also a direct competitor to the car that I drive - the Honda Accord, the Tourer (estate) version of which happens to be the best estate car that I have experienced to date.
COSTS
Rather like the bewildering range structure, the area of running costs ...
