Advantages: Spacious, well equipped & economical Disadvantages: The handbrake!!!!!!!!!! & handling
Since I was young, I remembered seeing VW Passats, thinking that they were dull & ugly. Over time, the Passat has become a more attractive car, the latest I believe to be the most pleasing on the eye.
I have owned the SE model since September 2005 & have done in excess of 16,000 miles, many of those done on long trips, so I feel now that I am in a position to be able to give an accurate an honest review of this car.

I would recommend going for the metallic colours or black, as these seem (in my opinion) to suit the car better than solid colours.

I have owned the SE model since September 2005 & have done in excess of 16,000 miles, many of those done on long trips, so I feel now that I am in a position to be able to give an accurate an honest review of this car.
LOOKS The saloon version is very sleek & appealing on the eye. In some reviews that I have read in the newspapers, they have described it as boring. I found, with being one of the first owners in the UK that it certainly turned heads in an almost approving manner. I would recommend going for the metallic colours or black, as these seem (in my opinion) to suit the car better than solid colours.
BUILD QUALITY On the whole, the build quality is typical of VW. It is solid, well put together, no rattles or missing screws. There are some areas where things weren't quite as good. On delivery, the front passenger door bin had a scratch on it (which was replace by VW). The petrol flap & hinge is made of plastic, which I found out (to my expense) can be easily broken if knocked. I felt this was a bit of a let down considering the rest of the car is solid.
INTERIOR The interior is probably best described as safe & solid. The seats are comfortable, the choice materials are good, but somewhat middle of the road. Seat cloth is hard wearing & should last the course of time. Seats are comfortable, the drivers being electronically with a usefull back support, which when correctly adjusted, makes the driving position very comfortable. The front and back seat passengers have loads of space which all makes for a comfortable environment for all. The boot is a cracking size. It has good access & is very roomy. The 60/40 split seats improve practicality & they are lockable too making the boot secure.
INTERIOR FEATURES I have found the new Passat to be well equipped with many useful features. Interior lights are powerful, but discrete. Read ventilation & a rear 12 volt socket has proven useful for kids on a long journey for plugging in a portable dvd player. Rear ventilation & a rear centre armrest also add comfort at the back. For the driver, there are useful aids such as cruise control, trip computer, air conditioning, a good quality CD/radio with good reception, ventilated glove box and storage area in arm rest, plenty of storage for maps, pens, paper etc, electric windows, electric mirrors, boot & fuel flap release. All the controls are well laid out and in arms reach. As with most cars, airbags are aplenty, driver, passenger, side airbags. The blue dashboard lighting is soothing on the eye, much appreciated on the longer journeys at night. The soft cabin lighting on the centre console is a nice touch & not obtrusive.
ENGINE The 2 litre turbodiesel (140PS) is a must for this car. I drove the 105PS car on the testdrive & found it to be a little lacking. The engine has oodles of torque and bottom end pull. I haven't noticed any turbo lag with this car & have found it to be reasonably responsive for a diesel. Fuel economy is good. I am getting around 51mpg (motorway and urban combined). With previous VW diesels, I have found that the engines loosen up around 40-50K miles and give improved mpg. I am expecting this one to do the same. On the downside, I am having to top up the oil between services. This is equating to 1 litre for every 10K miles. The 6 speed manual box is positive & smooth.
DRIVING & HANDLING The new Passat is best described as a motorway cruiser. You can drive 200 miles & be as fresh at the end of the journey as you were at the start. The engine is relatively quiet at motorway speeds & powerful enough to manouvre safely. On minor roads, the Passat starts to struggle a little. The car does lurch a little when going into a corner. I found this to be the case on the test drive. I subsequently upgraded the suspension to the sports option when I ordered the car. This gives a much superior ride and the car is more stable. The upgraded suspension is firm but not hard enough to shake out your fillings!!!!!! The power steering is positive, though a little light for my liking. Saying that, I have now got used to it. The usual features are there such as ABS, ESP (a form of traction control) etc. The dashboard is clear when driving & informative, especially with the computer. Visibility is on the whole good, though on some junctions, the passenger side rear door column can make the view awkward. Headlamps give good illumination.
On the whole, it is good to drive.
There are two negatives. The first is the handbrake. This is a button located on the dashboard. To engage the handbrake, you push the button. To disengage the handbrake, you should be able to just put it in gear and drive off. This works around 95% of the time. If you raise the clutch up too quick, then it does not release quick enough. It can be a pain, but you do get used to driving with this button handbrake............ eventually. The second is the sheer length of the car. It is in Audi A6 territory!!! Parking takes a little getting used to. I cheated and got the parking sensors fitted, though these can be temperamental at times. After 10 months I do not have total trust in them.
The Passat uses the key fob as the key to start the engine. Inside the fob is a key, which is used for locking the glovebox & the rear seats. This is a released by a button on the side of the fob. It took me some time to work this out and only realised the key was there when I read the instruction manual.
SERVICING Servicing at VW is not an issue & they include a mini valet as part of the service. I am unable to comment on the cost of the service as I am covered under a fleet contract.
IN CONCLUSION I am on the whole pleased with my Passat, so much so, I have recommended Passats to other colleagues who have also been pleased with their purchase. I am by no means saying that this car is perfect & totally agree with reviews that I have read that have commented on the handbrake button. The reasoning is good as it does give more room up front, but it is frustrating when it does not engage quick enough. I would recommend that you give the handbrake a chance, as you do get used to it. It is a good motorway mile munching family car with a healthy fuel economy.
Advantages: Size, running costs, Motorway muncher Disadvantages: Not ideal for Town Driving. Not for 5 large adults.
Been driving a 2.0TDI SE for the best part of 2 years. I have done about 60,000 miles in the car and have had very few complaints, so lets get them out of the way first. The steering can feel a tad light at high motorway speeds if you are not carrying a lot of weight. The sensitivity of the steering wheel can lead you to contsantly adjust your steering wheel slightly every few seconds. You can however get this adjusted at your dealer (it has six ... ...handbrake can take a little getting used to, especially if you do a lot of motorway miles and rarely use it. But thats just because it is a new system, not one that is faulty.
Now onto the good points.
Cruise control is fantastic. Pull the level to turn on at your current speed. Tap up for 5 more mph and tap down for 5 less mph. Push back to turn off. Pressing the accelerator will increase speed, but will not turn the cruise control off. Pressing ...

A larger than average family saloon car with that little bit extra for the 'driver' in you! I had mine from new in December 2005 and have covered almost 75000 miles in less than 2 years. Standard equipment included 17" alloys, climate control, single cd player, dusk til down automatic lighting function and some very comfortable sports seats. I added 'cruise control' which is surprisingly not a standard option, though it is on the 'SE' and 'SEL' versions.
... ...and its 6 speed manual gearbox is fantastic as it is very close and quick to change through the gears.
The car cruises on the motorway and gives in excess of 50mpg on a good run, and even through urban areas I have had no less than 40-45mpg returns.
It feels a well built and quality vehicle and does not have the rattles and bangs of similar mileage cars I have had in the past (blue oval badged).
Its interior is more than adequate and size wise ...

I recently drove the new VW Passat 2.0TDi on an extended hire basis. When I picked the car up I had no information on how it worked, and so the first problem was how to start it, which wasn't obvious. By trial and error over about 10 minutes, I deduced that you have to insert the key (which does not turn), depress the clutch and then press they key again while keeping the clutch depressed. Hey presto, a running engine (plus several choice expletives ... ...car is powerful, fast, reasonably economic and roomy. It pulled very well on the Spanish motorways and frequently out-accelerated other cars (including turbo diesels) on hills; in this respect it was very impressive. The visibility could be better; the front pillars seem to be positioned just so that you cannot see around sharp bends, especially hairpins, without craning your neck or shifting driving position. Rear visibility for reversing could ...

Advantages: Supremely easy to drive, comfortable, looks nice. Disadvantages: None so far.
I have had a Passat 2.0 TDi SE automatic since July 2007, it is a company vehicle and I do a lot of miles, typically about 30K per annum (business + social). I can honestly say that it is the most comfortable and easiest to drive/control car I have ever used. With the cruise system you can preset your speeds, then just flip a lever, and off you go. You don\'t even need to use the handbreak when waiting on hills, as the Passat automatically holds ... ...Rides bumps and lays on the road beautifully.
So far, I have yet to spot any downsides to the vehicle at all, and I would whole heartedly reccommend it to anyone who likes a comfortable, smooth ride with plenty of room to spare inside.
Fuel consumption is typically 47 mpg on \"round the town\" and 52 mpg on motorways. Which is actually a lot better than my friend\'s Ford Fiesta! So big car doesn\'t necessarily mean gas guzzler. ...

I bought this car a year ago now and have been very disapointed many levels.
Yes it is spacious, yes of course it is safe and yes it drives ok and is reliable.
So why have i rated it poor? For a number if reasons really, it is boring, unresponsive, very fuel thirsty (especially for a car that says its not!). The biggest problem i have found is the inate lack of power in gears 3 and 4, which in effect makes the car sluggish and a struggle up hills ... ...that it should not.
I am starting to think that perhaps my car is faulty, as all others seem to love the car, maybe my next service will show up something!
As far as i am concerned, the literature that comes with the car is wrog and it should read 36mpg!! (combined - and no, i do not thrash it!!) ...

Advantages: Comfort, Performance and Economy. This great car is a pleasure to own and drive Disadvantages: Minor niggle is no radio controls on the steering wheel
had the VW Polo scoring higher due to the lower servicing costs although a little too small for my needs preferring the VWPassat for size..
In an aside I asked if he saw the recent Skoda Fabia advertising campaign featuring the construction of a full-size a car-shaped cake. He replied that Skoda was taken over by VW and I could secure my reliable ?German Diesel? in the guise of a Skoda. I made enquiries about the costs of both purchasing and ownership and found them to be a lot lower. The cost for a 2.0 litre TDI Skoda Octavia estate was around £5000 lower than a similar VWPassat. I enquired about servicing from a local Skoda Garage and he informed me the regular Annual 10,000-mile service was around £80, I was even paying £132 for my Ford Focus, and variable servicing depending upon your driving habit and when it was due ...
