Mk 2 (round lights) and Mk 3 (square lights) Polo 1.05ltr The Volkswagen Polo 1.05 is the car I would and have bought in times of crisis. I owned my first 1.05 when I was 17, a C reg 1985 silver saloon (the height of fashion!) that cost me £775 8 years ago. This car lasted me 2 years before a tree sent it to car heaven. I can safely say that before its run in with the tree, this car was one of the strongest most reliable car I have ever owned. The car had covered over 100,000 miles and on inspection of the pistons and cylinder head, the engine looked to be in perfect condition. The only reason ... more

Advantages Advantages Highly reliable, cheap to run and has a good public image. Used prices keep well.

Disadvantages Disadvantages The lower spec 1000cc engine has problems with driving performance due to the weight of the car.

The lower class 1 litre Polo has both good and bad points. I currently have a 1998 S reg, which has done around 60K. It is a well-designed, well-built car that is highly reliable. I have had the car for 8 months and have only had one problem. This was self-inflicted as I did a DIY job of fitting an alarm and remote central locking. Easy to do but I was unable to start my car on day as the electrics had cut out and needed it to be towed to a garage! For the size it has a large boot space compared to rivals and the space for rear passengers is adequate. I recently had a rear light bulb blow and ... more

Advantages Advantages Reliability, economy, durability and it's a v dub.

Disadvantages Disadvantages Paint can chip easily.

You have probably read this a thousand times and hear it is again if you want a reliable car then this is it. Its almost as if they carve them out of pig iron because they feel like they could withstand an atomic explosion. This was my first car and is still one of the best cars ive owned and im now on car number 7. I was a student at the time and so cheap runnig costs were handy i used to run the car on about seven pounds a week and drive flat stick every where nothing broke, nothing fell off and it still cost seven pounds a week. In the hole time i had the car i never maintained it, abused ... more

Advantages Advantages cost of ownership, reliability, durability, low budget motoring

    Disadvantages Disadvantages looks, image, performance

Buying a first car, or simply on a tight "no-frills" budget can be more costly than anticipated. Many people say don't buy a car for less than a thousand pounds unless you are willing to pay half as much again to get it sorted straight away. Three years ago in 1997 I bought an '89 F-reg VW Polo C. With a 1043cc engine and a frugal 45bHP, this is no monster. But longevity, reliability and durability have stuck to this car's name more than mud since I bought it! After haggling with the private seller, I got the car down from £1300 to £1100. A few weeks later I had to spend £150 on a new ... more
