Advantages: Surprisingly powerful engine for a 1.4, economical and of course its a VW promising reliability and good residuals. Disadvantages: Too easy to utilise engine's power and spoil economy!

We looked at several different options. One was a Honda Civic but my wife didn’t like the styling and it was too big. Next came the Honda Jazz, very impressive seat arrangements but again my wife didn’t like the styling. (I think it was the bright pink demonstrator that put her off). On to Peugeot – 307 too big but the 206 turbo diesel estate seemed to get positive responses and it went on the short list. We also considered an Astra Estate – a plain Jane and a Vectra Estate, too big. At VW it was the Golf hatch and estate but they seemed too expensive even secondhand. The diesels especially so.
However the VW dealership did have another offering.
Now the latest Polo had been available for several months and ranged from a 1.2 petrol three door at £7,995, to the 1.9tdi diesel sport at nearly £14,000 on the road. Its bigger than the previous model – in fact I read somewhere its now as big as the original Golf model. The salesman seemed keen to deal and offered us an excellent trade-in. Why excellent? – well it was £2,000 more than we’d been offered at Vauxhall! It was a close run decision with the Peugeot 206 Estate losing out simply because of perceived reliability, future resale value and the fact that we’d previously had several VW’s which we’d been very happy with. Colour was a choice between silver and metallic blue – the really important decision for my wife! “Silver cars are too common these days” - so blue it was to be.
Our metallic blue 5 door Polo S arrived within a week and has surprised us both. It is no longer seen as a compromise - far from it. My wife is happy and has even said it goes too fast (there's no pleasing some people!) and I've been pleasantly surprised by the power of what is after all only a 1.4litre three cylinder engine. So far its been large enough to meet our fairly modest needs (kids grown up!).
The car does all the basics well, good acceleration, smooth braking, reasonably quiet (for a diesel) and the usual convenience of a hatchback. Economy is just under fifty around town and about fifty five on longer journeys. Overall quality is excellent, though for a VW, a surprising number of dashboard rattles which I’m hoping the dealer will sort under warranty.
We haven’t done a huge mileage in the car and on paper the extra cost of a diesel isn’t easily justified against the fuel savings and shorter servicing intervals compared to petrol. However I’m hoping that there will still be a diesel premium when we come to sell and there just wouldn’t be that surge of power under the bonnet waiting to be released, if it was petrol powered.
Niggles there are - mainly to do with VW's choice of standard accessories on the S model – there’s a grossly over engineered cup holder that pops out of the dash (there also are two very simple ones in the central console) but no brightness adjustment for the dashboard lighting (the blue tinge is nice but too bright), there's central locking but with the key only - no remote facilty, an immobiliser but no alarm, there's temperature adjustable air con but no light in the boot and only a lap belt in the centre of the rear seat. These omissions can only be described as penny pinching in the extreme. And its recommended that you use your dealer to change a headlight bulb - progress indeed.
Unless you do very high mileages, servicing is every 10,000 miles which seems quite a short interval in comparison to what other manufacturers are now able to offer eg Renault is 18,000 miles on its modern diesels. Maybe another case of generating work for the dealers? How cynical can one get?
One final point is that the car does use oil - most cars do you might well say, but you can't just pop into Halfords and buy a container of Castrol or Duckhams for topping up. Because the diesel is the latest high pressure PD version (VW’s answer to everybody elses’ common rail technology, whatever that is) the oil must conform to the exact VW specification and the best place to go is, surprise, surprise, your local VW dealer and comparatively speaking, it's expensive stuff!
Niggles apart, its been an excellent purchase and promises many years of happy motoring. It was maybe a bit overpriced when purchased in 2002 but recent reductions in list price and special editions (£10,750 in September 2003) have made it much more competitive. The Polo should be on everyone's short list when looking for a small hatch and is worth considering against apparently larger cars.
I have a VW Polo 1.4tdi 06 plate
Its the best car I've had, economical, practical, stylish and nippy.
The boot is not huge but can fit one large suitcase and two small at a squeeze so adequate for my family of four. A full tank of deisel ( around £40) will last me two to three weeks with the everyday school and work run and weekend local roaming around. We took it to Glasgow - around 360 miles from home with a full tank on leaving, it had just ... ...When pulling away it drives more like a 1.6. and will sit very comfortably at 70mph on the motorway. It feels safe and comfortable to drive, and has excellent build quality ( so my husband says lol ). We've had no mechanical problems so far.
It has cheap Tax and insurance.
Servicing costs £45 to change the oil for its first service at 10,000 , £120 for its next one at 20,000 miles and £150 for its third. It came fitted with a great cd radio, has ...

Advantages: were do i start, it's fast, cool looking, Economic and fun to drive!!!! Disadvantages: some times it can sound like a diesel when it starts
This car is awesome, I just don't know where to start, it's that good!
The car I am writing about is a 2003 model and has done 40,000 miles. This model has mod cons such as electric windows, electric mirrors, abs, cd player etc
Let's start off in the heart of the car, the engine. This engine is a little 1.4L diesel that has had a turbo strapped to it. According to the statistics on the internet this car has 84bhp, but it feels like so much more. ... ...a normal diesel but after 5mins of the engine running you could be forgiven for thinking that it is petrol. The diesel engine seems like any normal diesel until you hit 2500rpm, it's at this point you're pulled back in to your seat and the car just comes into its own. It's not only the performance of this car that shocks me but it's the fuel economy. You would think a car with this much accl would just drink the fuel but it barley ever has to go ...

Advantages: Air Con, Build Quality, Fuel Economy, Safety Disadvantages: Service Costs
This review is for the VW Polo 1.4 TDI S edition on the 52 plate. My experience of the car is that it was very reliable, well built, has excellent fuel economy around 50mpg and a good level of equipment for the class of car.
The interior of the car is well made. The quality of the materials used is excellent. Instead of a plasticy looking dash the VW polo has a matt ruberised feel to the dash board and switches. Whereas the rest of the interior ... ...grey materials is a bit excessive and in my opinion the quality of the seat materials could be a little more hardwearing but they are my only gripes with the cabin area.
In terms of ride the car is pleasant to drive around town, very responsive, and not much cabin noise under 50mph. The car is very stable to drive with very little body roll. Motorway driving could be a bit noisier and although the car is comfortable for journeys lasting an hour ...

Quick review of Volkswagen Polo 1.4 TDI
I bought this car, used a couple of months ago and its been a perfect little runner!
With just a 1.4 diesel engine, its cheap to run, even now that prices are going up, I can fill my tank for £55 and it will last for a month! Not bad at all. The road tax currently costs just £35, so definitely no complaining there.
I use the car daily for work and for leisure purposes, especially for trips at the weekend, and have experienced no trouble at all. ...

I have now had my 2004 1.4TDi Polo for three weeks and am more than satisfied with this latest offering from VW. This is a supermini that outperforms its class. The build quality is as good as you should expect from VW and the ride, handling and performance do not dissappoint. It is worth spending a little extra to ensure the comfort of Air Conditioning and the 6-Disc in Dash CD Changer has also proven to be a wise investment
The Polo has plenty ... ...of cubby holes. A well enginered cup holder sits in the dash and two further cup holders are located behind the handbrake. While the car is not as inspiring to drive as some of the larger VW models it does perform well, with the 1.4TDI engine producing ample power and returning a fuel economy of around 60mpg.
I am very impressed with this car, but if I had to make the choice again I may be tempted to buy the equivilant Skoda Fabia and use the savings ...

Advantages: Very economical and attractive Disadvantages: None
I purchased my Audi A2 new in September 2001, and can honestly say that it is the best car I have ever owned. It is a 1.4L TDi, is black and has a grey interior.
The diesel engine is very very quiet, compared with my daughters' VWPolo and Toyota Yaris, and my husband's VW Bora. It is very economical to run - it does approximately 80 miles per gallon! Another great thing is that it is really quick off it's mark - that is probably down to the turbo engine, although admittedly I don't know very much about car engines!
It is very lightweight - the bodywork is made from aluminium - although it still scores well on handling. It has alloy wheels, which really look great with the black metallic paint, which I chose as an optional extra, but certainly worth the money.
The radio cassette has RDS, and there are electric windows ...
