Before I start my opinion on the Volkswagen Polo, I would like just to let you know that I don’t actually own this car, but am very near to purchasing one. I have trawled through internet sites, opinions, magazines and company reps to gain the knowledge that I have; I hope it helps anyone interested in the Volkswagen Polo!
The following in formation is based on the model that I am considering purchasing which is;
The Volkswagen Polo is one of the better looking small car around;
and by far the most grown-up and mature looking. It’s new front lights recently introduced both make the car look a little meaner, but overall make the car look far better than any other Polo before it. Alloy wheels and a rear wing available on any of the models, if you are willing to pay of course.
ENIGNE
There are many different engine capacities available from the very economical 1 litre, to the very sporty 1.6 16v and the GTI versions, if you can afford the petrol and insurance costs.
The 1.4 litre combines a bit of everything, in my opinion; economy and a bit of bite ideal for city and motorwaydriving.QUALITY
After extensively looking over and examining the car I have come to the conclusion that the overall quality of the Polo cars and more specifically the 1.4 match is outstanding. Every switch has a brilliant feel, it’s just little touches that make the build quality of the car so good. Things like a cover that covers the latch for the boot so you don’t get oil on your things, or like the slowness the glove box comes down.
The interior in my opinion in also very good, but may be a little to ‘happy’. The speed and rev counter have sliver rings around them and there are masses of lights on the dash. It does look good in the dark though.
What were my concerns?
1. Cost is quite high for a small car 2. The polo hasn’t got that higher street cred rating.
PRICE/INSURANCE
The POLO 1.4 comes in at about £9,995 with one a year old costing about £8,495; you may as well get a new one!. The Polo (1.4) would be generally good on petrol so not to many worries there, and is placed in an insurance grouping of 5.
FEATURES
The Polo comes with very little features indeed those that are available are listed below.
The sales reps in the garage were very helpful but always willing to plug their car over the others.
I wouldn’t recommend the servicing though, after recently taking my Golf their. It cost £250, they found just about everything they could on the bill. Then when I got the car back home the exhaust fell off. So much for Volkswagen.
VALUATION
Polos hold their value very well, in fact they are the best cars for holding their value. They hold about 50% of their value in 4 years. In the garage there was an R ‘Reg’ going for £6,295.
RELIABLITITY
I cant say to much about this aspect of the car, but what I can say is that the Volkswagen Golf has been on of the most unreliable cars that I have ever owned. This may come as a surprise. I can say the Golf we had before went for ten years or more. Anyway Volkswagen have always have the better reputation when it comes to cars, so that should settle your mind a little. Until I actually own the car I can’t comment to much.
STREET CRED
The Polo an alright ‘Street cred’ rating; it’s no Nova (if you know what I mean). This is because the Polo is extremely un-customisable; and Volkswagen parts can be very expensive.
DEALS
Recently Volkswagen have been advertising the Polo Match with free air conditioning Which isn’t bad as they have also lowered the price of the car recently to 9,995 from 10,995
SUMMARY/CONCLUSION
A good, sensible looking car, you have got to decide mainly for yourself it caters for all, although the prices of the car may not suit your bank balance.
My next point of call will be to have a test-drive, driving it is the most important part of the car. I am sure that anyone unsure about this car with have there made up after a test drive.
Thanks, your review told me everything I needed to know x

I was thinking about getting one too, and similarly have trawled through everything to do with the polo. The cost of it is the main sticking point though for me.

That has just about everything I needed to know... I am helping my GF find a POLO, she wants the 16V 1.4. So if the Match is as good as you say, then this should be quite a good little car for her.... Good op, nice one!
Advantages: Surprisingly powerful engine for a 1.4, economical and of course its a VW promising reliability and good residuals. Disadvantages: Too easy to utilise engine's power and spoil economy!
