I have recently bought a 1999 T-Reg model for £1990 with just 49,500 miles on the clock. Which was an absolute bargain considering the vehicles reputation for reliability and also the fact that it is hard to get one with such a low mileage for its age.
Since I have had it I have had no serious problems with it, but have experienced a few minor annoyances. These include the drivers side door barrel breaking so that I had to use the central locking from the passenger side to lock/unlock and also one of the coolant system hoses disconnected because the clip came off. Another minor thing is that when it has been raining or the windows are wet, they stick and the motors cannot close them without a helping hand. This could however be caused due to a dying battery and not the motors themselves, also I have to consider the fact that it is not often that I open the window when driving in the rain. I do however think that there may be some gremlins in the wiring though, because ocassionally the CD player just turns itself off. Also a few times I've had the speakers in the passenger side stop working, when I press the drivers side window button, but this can be resolved simply by turning the CD player off and on again. So apart from a few dodgy electronics and a broken door lock I am very pleased with the car on the whole.
As an overall evaluation; its handling in strong winds is not much to be desired but the overall reliability, comfort, looks and features, more than compensate for that. In comparrison with other cars in its class it is also a relatively more expensive contender, but it does hold its value well. The fuel consupmtion is very good and it does do about 44mpg, but personally I now wish that I had bought the Diesel version as it is much more economical, especially with fuel prices as high as they currently are. Basically if your looking for something small, reliable, good looking, economical, comfortable and a secondhand car between £1,200 and £4,000. Then this is definetly a strong contender. But I would'nt personally recommend buying a model older than a Mark 3 as I have known friends to have experienced alot of problems with them.
I also advise you to have a look at the newer Seat Ibizas as they are in the same category but are generally cheaper than the Polo's. Seat is also owned by VW so they have the same reliability standards.
Overall A very good buy, especially if you can find one with low mileage as it will not devaluate as rapidly. Top buy for young driver's with a bit of cash to splash because it is only group 5 insurance, cheap tax and cheap to run. Highly recommend, but don't pay too much for it.

Your reviews obviously have improved a lot since this one. cars are "my thing" so I would comment that far more running cost info would be good here, fuel consumption, servicing, spare parts - insurance even. At that price you did get a bargain though. In this market I'd also be looking at the Skoda Fabia along with the Seat - Volkswagen have really turned around both of those companies. Richard.
Advantages: Surprisingly powerful engine for a 1.4, economical and of course its a VW promising reliability and good residuals. Disadvantages: Too easy to utilise engine's power and spoil economy!
