Advantages: Nippy for a small engine size, good handling, good build quality, tons of equipment! Disadvantages: Gearbox bearings can wear between 60 and 80k, pedal box recall, bbs alloys corrode easily.

I bought my W plate Polo GTi in October 2006 and decided to write a review covering what you should look for if you are looking to buy a 2nd hand Polo GTi. I did a lot of research while I was looking for my car and feel that this knowledge could be a great help to others.
I'll do the basic information first. The Polo GTi was only ever made in 3 colours, Red, Silver and Black - any other coloured car you may see badged up as a GTi will either be an import or an engine conversion. The car came as either a 3 or 5 door and had a subtle bodykit which included a black plastic splitter on the bumper, honeycomb grills, front fog lights, side skirts and a spolier. The car also benefitted from a sports suspension which sat 15mm lower than that of the standard car. Inside, the car had chromed dial surrounds, leather 'GTi' gearknob and steering wheel and sports seats with either a fabric finish or leather with heated front seats. The car came with a huge variety of equipment as standard including xenon headlights with washers, air con & sunroof or climatronic climate control, heated wing mirrors and a cd player or 6 cd changer (in the boot).
Buying a car of this age, there will be common signs of wear and tear including stone chips to the bumper and bonnet, BBS standard alloys beginning to corrode and the body seams below the rear lights may have cracked slightly. These are nothing to worry about and will be common on most cars that you view.
The car had one recall for a pedal box fault, this was a total recall by VW and if the work has been done, there will be a sticker under the carpet in the boot or in the service book. Alternatively you can give you local dealer a ring and they can check your cars registration number on their database. If the recall has not been done, VW will carry out the work for free.
When you test drive the car, look out for any usunual whining noises which could indicate gearbox bearing wear. The bearings in this gearbox wear easily and often need replacing at around 60-80k. My car had this carried out at 63k. Although the bearings were not badly worn, I felt it best to replace them. Other possibly signs of gearbox wear are difficulty getting the car into gear and crunching into gear (other the reverse which has no synchro) during normal changing.
If you are buying a car that has over 40k on the clock, check that it has had the cambelt replaced as VW quite recently decided that it should be changed after 40k rather than 60k.
Things to watch out for:
I have seen several cars for sale which are missing the xenon headlight washers. This could be due to a front impact or could mean the car has not always been a GTI. An HPI check should show up anything like this.
Check that both electric windows are in working order and that the rear washer and headlight washers all spray sufficiently. Please note that if the washer tank has less than 1ltr of fluid left, the headlight washers will not operate.
Other pointers:
The heated wing mirrors will operate when the rear screen heater button is pressed.
The fuel tank does not have a locking cap, instead the fuel flap locks with the central locking.
Lastly I feel that I should give my opinion on the car now that I have given you all the facts. I have owned this car for 8 months now and have loved every minute of it. The car is quick for a 1.6 16v, VW managed to produce 125bhp from the engine which gives a top speed of 127mph and a 0-60 book time of 8.7 seconds although I am convinced that mine is quicker than that with only the addition of a K&N air filter. The insurance group is 12, which as a 22 year old with 0 no claims cost me around £900 for a year. Tax will currently cost £180 for a year which is a little pricey but its worth it!
The car handles very well as standard, there is little bodyroll when cornering and the car feels stable. Acceleration is good right through the rev range due to it being so small and light, but the car really comes into its own at around 3500-4000 revs.
The car looks spot on and the bodykit fits in perfectly. The xenon lights are powerful and I think I would struggle to go back to driving a car with standard lights now! The seats are comfortable and easily adjusted and the car generally gives a good smooth ride. As with most VW's, the car feels solid and well made and despite the 65000 miles on my car, it still looks much younger than it is inside and out.
As a last note, you will be able to find several enthusiasts forums with a quick google search and these provide a wealth of information and advise about Polo's and VW's in general.
I hope this review has helped you and that you enjoy your Polo should you choose to buy one!
Advantages: Quick, nippy, good looking and fun. Disadvantages: Fairly high insurance group and not the cheapest car to run.
...liked very much, but when Volkswagen brought out the Polo GTI I could hardly contain my excitement. I’ve always loved cars and even by the age of 22 I had become bored with ‘normal’ cars and wanted something a bit more special. My main aspiration was something fast – ideally I’d love a two seater sports car, but my tender years made the insurance costs somewhat prohibitive. My second proviso was that whatever it was had to be small and nippy. I rarely ... ...wasted space. Not surprsingly, this meant that my other favourite car genre is the hot hatch. It was this which led me to conclude that I just had to have a Polo GTI!
Test driving was really a formality (nevertheless an exciting one!) and within a week the deal was signed and sealed. A month later I was the proud owner of my very own Polo GTI.
Firstly, for the purists amongst you, I’ll cover the technical side – in other words, what’s under the ...

I thought my love affair with the hot hatch ended when my twenties arrived, when girlfriends stopped being overnight conveniences and when - as happens with all men at some point - the size of my car began to be more important than the size of my manhood.
The VW Golf GTi 16v was the hot-hatch of choice when I hung out with girls form Essex who left their cheese-string thongs under the passenger seat for my mother to find and then, in my twenties ... ...rather than a nuisance, it was the BMW 3-series that was the car of choice, because it was the one that was most likely to get you in to the knickers of the slender young female sales executive who wore the pinstripe trouser suit and smoked Marlboro Ultra Lights. When I got married and settled down to create a family, it was the urban four-by-four that became the motor to have, so that I could blend in with the Yummy Mummies on the school run.

Advantages: Small, nice to drive, nippy Disadvantages: expensive to buy, hard to find, poor gearboxes
I fist purchased my MK5 VW Polo GTI back in january of last year and i have become so impressed with the car i decided to write this review.
I'll start off with a quick over view of the car.Statistics report that only 3,000 were made. I have not seen this officially reported by VW however. It is reported that 1000 of three colours were made. Red, Black and silver. 500 five door and 500 three door of each colour. So you tend not to see too many around ... ...GTI
The MK5 ' can also be known as a 6N2,It was only made from 2000 until 2001.
Now for a quick guide to the specification:
Xenon Discharge Headlights with automated washer jets Red Stitched GTi Steering Wheel GTi Gearknob GTi "1" Seats 15mm Lowered Suspension 6CD Changer in the boot Heated Rear Window/Heater Electric Mirrors Electric Windows Air conditioning was standard on the 2000 model and later replaced with climate control from 2001 onwards

Advantages: Fast and Fun Disadvantages: VW Dealership
Had this car for nearly 5 years now from new. The car is great fun to drive, handles very well and the commute to work is a giggle. Other than a set of super sticky tyres and an sporty air filter the car is stock. It hasn't been plain sailing as it has been back and forwards to VW for a catalogue of problems. First being the clutch went fairly early on and was eventually replaced under warranty. Pedal box recall again done under warranty. Corrosion ... ...up myself as it was due to `fair wear and tear'. Various light have come on and the car has gone into safe mode for no reason. Also had several clutch cables as all models were originally left hand drive and converted for UK market therefore clutch cable takes and unusual routing. VW customer service is an oxymoron and none existent with VW dealers being fairly dire. The interior is fairly well screwed together and comes with all the toys (aircon, ...

Advantages: Quick, Looks Good, Lots of Extra's, Retaining Value Disadvantages: Fuel Economy
I fell in love with my little beast when i saw here advertised by the dealer on the website. I drove round that afternoon and as soon as i saw it i knew i was gonna buy it.
I was a little worried as i'd had a Golf GT TDI bedfor and didn't tihnk it'd be up to the same spec. As it was a little car i thought it'd feel cheap and stuff.
The test drive went well, the car was responsive and handled like a little go-kart, ideal!!!
The insurance was cheaper ... ...it was under a grand (i was 22 at the time)
You get ABS, CD Multichanger, Climate Control, Electric Mirrors/Windows. The styling on the GTI is awsome, not too much but enough to give it that bit of class. The racing style seats hug you, although i guess for bigger poeple could bea problem.
It's quick off the lights, and i've had a ton 30 out of it and it was still going, so there is plenty there up top end. Braking is good to, so you can stop quickly ...

Advantages: Really cool, fun little car. Not many of them on the road. Fast. Well equipped for a small car. I could go on! Disadvantages: None that I can think of!
I had had a Polo 1.4 CL for two years and loved it, but when the GTI came out I just had to have one! I booked a test drive, and despite having already driven cars such as the Peugeot 206 GTI and the Ford Puma, the PoloGTI was just what I wanted!
I got a good deal on it, as they had a special offer on at the time, and as I was part exchanging another Polo they gave me a good deal on that too.
The PoloGTI is fun to drive, fast (0-60 in 8.7 seconds), nippy, good looking, and gets you noticed - it is a real hot hatch! There are many extras included in the price - CD autochanger, digital climate control, ABS, traction control, 16 spoke alloys, gas discharge headlights (the bluey ones!), blue lighting on the dials - you name it! I get a lot of good comments on it from friends and strangers alike!
The only complaint I had was ...

Advantages: Reasonably comfortable and spacious interior for passengers Disadvantages: Noisy, shuddering ride, uncomfortable to drive and strange handling!
Before I embark upon this opinion I must just state that this is not my car of choice. I am more of a nippy, hot hatch type of girl ? my current pride and joy is a VWPoloGTI ? but when I travel anywhere for work I have to take one of the less exciting pool cars, and these happen to be the Vauxhall Vectra LS 2.0 DTS. I have just spent two days driving one of these ? a combination of motorway, town and country driving, and am now feeling somewhat inspired to put down my thoughts about the car. As I don?t own it I am not able to fill you in on all the technical specifications myself ? but a brief consultation of whatcar.co.uk informs me that it has a 1994cc turbodiesel engine, delivering 99bhp, with a max speed of 121mph, and does 0-60 in 12 seconds (yawn, any time today would be good!)
Now, onto my first impressions of the car ...
Advantages: Power steering, ABS brakes and good ful consumption Disadvantages: Still requires more gear changing than lager engined models
The VWPolo now comes in new model classifications and they are:
· E, S, SE, Colour Concept, 16V and the GTI
Since the opinion is about the entry model the E, I will stick to that model. The entry model comes with the following engines sizes and 3 or 5-door hatchback:
· 1.0 litre 50 bhp, 1.4 litre 60 bhp and the 1.9 litre SDI 64 bhp diesel
The fuel consumption figures according to EU Directive 93/116 are:
· 1.0E: Urban 35.3mpg, Extra-Urban 58.9mpg and Combined 47.1mpg
· 1.4E: Urban 32.1mpg, Extra-Urban 56.5mpg and Combined 44.1mpg
· 1.4E Auto: Urban 26.9mpg, Extra-Urban 44.8 and Combined 36.2mpg
· 1.9E Diesel: Urban 44.1mpg, Extra-Urban 72.4mpg and Combined 58.9mpg
The E model comes with the following equipment as standard:
Safety and Security:
· ABS: Anti-lock Brakes
· Airbags: Driver and passenger’s ...
