UPDATE. 08/04/07
I've now had the VW Polo for 29 months and I can't wait to get rid of it. The wiper blades have been changed 5 times, the engine management system light comes on very frequently (VW have no idea as to why), the brakes need to be de-glazed every month or so to reduce the constant grinding noises. The grinding only happens if the brakes are wet / damp, i'e after it's been raining or if the car has been washed. Funny how no other car I've driven does that. The cracking / squeaking noises coming from the edge of the windscreen and the plastic on the dash drives me nuts (VW are aware of this inherent fault, but say there is nothing that can be done about it). It usually happens when the de-mister is on, or there is too much warmth on the screen; the plastic part of the dash that touches the screen expands, and when you are driving, it causes a sound like creaking floorboards. The only way to stop this, is to put the A/C on full blast for 20 seconds. The creaking then stops because the plastic has contracted. It doesn't take long for the noise to return though. Apparently newer models don't have this problem as a foam insert has been placed between the plastic and the glass. Be careful when you open the boot after / during rain, as water will pour in. The boot has to be opened very slowly to avoid a flood. The boot still needs to be slammed to close properly. I still manage to get a regular 54mpg @ 60mph. I had to purchase a back support for the drivers seat; after an hour or so, you are in a bit of a situation as it is so uncomfortable to drive without one (Argos £12.99). Well worth it. ANYBODY THAT WANTS TO BUY A VW POLO, PLEASE LOOK OUT FOR THESE PROBLEMS.
I purchased this vehicle on 27/11/2004 for £9,365, including a few added extras. I actually ordered a 1.2 Twist, but ended up getting a 1.4 instead (their mistake, not mine). It took 7 weeks to arrive from Germany, and was happy with the car, UNTIL, I opened the boot. No light in the boot whatsoever. Not even the provision for a light. No light in the glove box. Again, no provision made. Then to top it all off, the cigarette lighter was a dummy. I asked the Volkswagen dealer as to why, and their reply was that, "Only higher spec vehicles have a light in the boot and the glove box, i.e, SE and above. As for the cigarette lighter, VW do not supply vehicles with them installed. Furious is an understatement. Every car I have driven, and/or test driven, have had even these basic essentials. But not in the Polo Twist. The car drives beautifully. Handles well in the wet, and is very comfortable behind the wheel. I am 5' 10" and the seat height adjuster was not required. Before you buy one of these cars, I advise you to go to a showroom first and try the seat. It could save you an extra £90.00. Because once you have taken purchase of the car, it cannot be altered, and the salesperson won't want to know.
