VW Vento - Solid, Reliable Workhorse 02/06/2005

Advantages Cheaper to buy than a Golf, with the same features but more space
Disadvantages Parts are less common than the golf and it's heavier so suffers from body roll

I have owned a 1994 VW Vento 1.8CL for about 6 months now, I bought it for £800 with full tax and MOT and a reasonable service history. It has been a bargain as the equivolent VW Golf would have been around £1500 but with less boot space. You still get a bullet-proof engine, a great German gearbox that always pops perfectly into gear and excellent build-quality that makes you feel safe. To date it has only cost me £25 for a new rubber flange and the cost of a new tyre (due to an unavoidable puncture) which was only £30. Advantages it's a VW it'll run forever! Huge boot, good engine, solid chassis, low premium
Disadvantages Heavy to steer/brake when max loaded, not a head turner

I've had my Vento for 2 years - I don't want to part with it ever. Great, sensible car for dirt cheap these days. I bought it as a cheap, big car to ferry my musical equipment around but it turned out to be a shrewd money saving purchase! The car was at a local dealer for £995, with only 67000 genuine miles. I had to have it so I part-exchanged my old Micra and got it for £795. I bought the car for band use. I am a guitarist and need to carry around 2 guitars, accessories, amp head, 4x12 cab (2.5'x2.5' in size roughly). The 5doors and massive passenger space were ideal. The main selling point ... more
