Alan Moore is regarded as one of the greatest comic book writers around today, and with good reason. His storylines are consistently compelling, brilliantly readable, and also contain meanings beyond the simple events of the plot.

For me, V For Vendetta is the pinnacle of all these characteristics. It is the story of a mysterious and enigmatic character, V, set in a dystopian future similar to George Orwell's 1984 Big Brother-ruled society. He takes in a young woman, destroyed by society and disbelieving in the government, to be his protege as a revolutionary, and they begin their work, fighting against the English government, ruled by a man with a love of justice. Justice in this case is, in fact, Justice, the famous statue on the roof of the Old Bailey, a symbol which the ruler is in love, and obsessed with.

V himself is an enthralling enigma, a symbol which has emerged from nowhere and become something that people can identify with. Whose powers are immense and without origin, who can disappear at will, and defeat almost any opposition without problem. The slow revealing of his past and history is gripping, and makes the book incredibly hard to put down.

Moore's portrayal of a brutal government dedicated to war is close enough to the truth to be both poignant and frightening, but his messages of how to fight the system ring true and inspire confidence. V does not enjoy his work, but merely feels it necessary. The ending may surprise you or delight you, but it will certainly inspire you.

The artwork by David Lloyd is perfectly suited, dark in tone, detailed and beautifully coloured. It provides a perfect backdrop, giving London a feel of resignation, of submissance. Nothing stands out, nothing is special.

This book can change your opinions on many things, and I recommend it unequivocally.
