We are in the process of going through our annual ‘spring clean’ thing in our house. Yes, I know it’s almost November, and a bit late in the day but mum’s been really poorly these past few months and dad said he’ll give the upstairs a fresh lick of paint (and sort out all his DIY projects he’s been putting off for the past few years) to try to cheer her up and get ready for Christmas.
My brother and me have both been helping dad to clear out all of the wardrobes and bedroom cupboards and drawers and sort out what we want to keep and what we are going to give to charity. It became apparent very early on that we had way too much stuff and that we haven’t been very good at storing it all. For example, in the spare room we have a double wardrobe and a huge chest of drawers which are used just for storing ‘old’ clothes which never seem to see the light of day. We also have no space under our beds as we have ‘seasonal’ quilts, i.e. heavy weight ones for winter and lightweight ones for summer. These were using up an enormous amount of space which could be much better used for other things.
For once in his life it was my brother who had the brain wave when he suggested some vacuum storage bags. He said he’d seen them advertised on the shopping channel. We had no time to wait for a delivery though so we decided to go out to the shops to see if we could find some. We have a (very small) branch of Lakeland Plastics near to where we live. So, we drove out to see if they sold any. They did – but we underestimated the cost. Lakeland were selling them for £14.99 for a measly two bags. We reckoned we’d need about four times this amount and we simply didn’t have enough money between us to meet the cost.
There’s a lady who lives a few doors up from us who runs the Bettaware Catalogue and I thought that maybe we could order some that way but once again we decided against that due to time constraints. On the way home from the Lakeland shop we have to drive past our local Wilkinson’s. In my view, Wilkinson’s are always good for a bargain so we stopped off and had a gander. Sure enough, they were selling three bags for a mere £4.99. The pack of three bags contained one large vacuum bag (55 x 85cm) and two jumbo bags (60 x 105cm). We bought three packs in total, giving us nine bags.
These wonderful bags do everything they claim to do. My brother, dad and me managed to stuff a total of ten woolly tops into the large bag, 5 jackets into the second large bag and 4 coats into the next one. I have tons and tons of soft toys all over my room which I have always been unwilling to throw away, but I managed to stuff the whole lot of the into the jumbo bag, plus my single summer time duvet. The best bit about all of this is when you get to suck the air out of the bags. I was finding it hard to believe that we’d be able to shrink the contents to less than half the size the manufacturer claims you can. However, I have to say it’s true, the shrinkage is just amazing.
With these particular bags, there is a seal (a bit like the seal you get on ready grated cheese in the supermarkets) running right down the side of the bag. You simply open the seal, pop in your stuff, close the seal, and then (the best bit) … after you get your brother to go lug the Hoover up the stairs for you, you simply put the Hoover nozzle into the disc on the middle of the bag and suck every last drop of air out!! I didn’t want to switch the Hoover off as we watched in amazement as everything just shrunk before our eyes. It was so tempting just to stand there and keep on sucking!!
The plastic seems very heavy and durable and not at all prone to being easily ripped or damaged. As it’s airtight, it also claims to be waterproof, dirt proof and doesn’t allow any nasty smells to get in. You don’t just have to store your clothing or bedding in them either. We ended up stuffing in a pile of old CD’s shoes, books and lots of dad’s computer stuff he doesn’t use much but didn’t want to throw away. Once we’d used up all other bags, we put some stuff into the attic but left the rest out and it stacked very neatly and tidily back into the original cupboards BUT left us with a LOAD of room which we never had before.
My wardrobe looks almost bare now and I think it’s the perfect excuse to go out and buy myself a whole load of new clobber!! Highly recommended.
Advantages: take up less room Disadvantages: depends which make you buy!
I had decided to buy some of those vacum storage bags from the tv shopping channels. You know the ones i mean out all your spare bedding, clothes, towels soft toys ect in the bags suck all the air out and they store in a lot less room and are safe!
The only problem was that they were quite expensive especially when you add the postage costs in to the price, so when my betterware catalogue was delivered a few weeks ago and I noticed they had started ... ...3 packs. Betterware bags
******************
Each pack has 3 bags in it 1 large (55 x 85 cm) and 2 jumbo (60 x 105cm) Each pack cost £13.99. These are different to the bag on tv and I have to say different isn't better! They are quite a thick plastic which feels very sturdy, the problem though is with the sealing system or not sealing system to be exact.
The bags themselves are a white opaque but the top 6 inch or so of the bag is green inside, ...

Advantages: reasonable price, brilliant idea, easy to use Disadvantages: don't work if you don't get the right type, only available in a few stores
...the air out with your vacuum cleaner. Again there are different ways to do this depending on the type of bag, so more on this later. The bag and its contents shrink down to about half their original size and the whole lot is much easier to store.
How do they work?
--------------------------
As I said there are different types available and I have three of them. The first type works in two ways - you can either seal and roll up to push the air ... ...the bag and put the vacuum nozzle into the gap to suck the air out. This type can be useful for packing in your suitcase for holidays to save space, as you don't actually need a vacuum cleaner to use them, but using your vacuum is somewhat easier and more efficient. The trouble is it's quite an art getting the nozzle out without letting air back in, thus defeating the object! The second type has a small pocket attached to the opposite end of the ...

JML VacPac Vacuum Seal Storage Bags
Why I bought them...
A large quantity of bedding, clothes and other odds and ends that needed to be transported over two hundred miles from home to my narrowboat in readiness for my next cruise was causing me a real problem. Since retiring to enjoy my boat and freedom, my income has dwindled to nil and downsizing is the name of the game. My car has downsized too, now a little Ford KA, great for shopping but pretty ... ...up with the idea of Vacuum Storage Bags as a method of transporting my gear.
What they do....
The idea is that you pack your items for storage in the plastic bag and then seal it with the aid of a little plastic gizmo which you run along the upper edge of the bag so pressing together the zipper type closure to make an airtight seal. This done you then insert the nozzle of your vacuum cleaner into the special one way valve and literally suck the ...

Advantages: Excellent storage, cheap and very versatile Disadvantages: You want to suck and seal everything
...invest in some Space Saver Vacuum Bags, now widely available at most shops. Argos, Littlewoods, Lakeland Limited all sell these through their catalogue services, and not forgetting the place where they first appeared on our screens QVC.
These bags are a miracle for people with not a lot of space or a large amount of clothes, summer duvets and odds and sods they want safely storing until they need to come out again.
I purchased some of these through ... ...next step plug in the vacuum cleaner. If you have an up right vacuum you will need your hose for this part, take your vacuum attachment at place on the ring on the bag. Now switch on your vacuum and watch the magic before your eyes, the vacuum sucks out all the air that is contained in the bag and the clothes. The airtight seal is only then broken when you open the bag.
I must admit you do get a little carried away and see how much you can vacuum, ...

Advantages: Lots, saves space, reduces weight of the storage space Disadvantages: I only worry about the durability of the plastic
This is one of the best thing I have found in recent time... My husband bought it for us to pack all of our travelling clothes etc. and I have just fallen in love with the idea and the product. First of all its quite good size to accomodate clothes full of a suitecase. Then it saves you storage space. I have got just two of them now, but planning to buy more to sort out things at home which are not required in coming winter and then store them in ...

Overall this is an excellent Vacuum cleaner and does the job easily and effectively. It only costs around £80 and is well worth it for the power it has. ...
Advantages: lightweight, easy to use Disadvantages: not good for picking up cat fur, hairs
I was very disappointed with its suction power, especially for picking up cat hairs and dirt.
I had to drag the vacuum several times over the carpet. Increasing the power was not an option as it triggered the yellow device - that is the yellow bag showed through the little window [ie showing that the bag was expanding - maybe risk of bursting?] . The odour of dust coming from vacuuming was also a problem, which is the advantage of a bagless model.
Storage - the hose tends to topple when upright.
Has the disadvantage of having to change bags more often.
On the plus side, easy to carry up and down stairs. It has good storge for the tools. At £79.99 the price was not bad but it didnt meet my expectations. ...

Advantages: Great suction - fairly lightweight - easy to move around - good customer support Disadvantages: None
Patented cyclone technology - you just can't beat it - or so Dyson say and I have to agree. When I moved into my new place the one thing I had completely forgotten about was a vacuum cleaner and this lead to much rushing around when I realised that my cough and wheezing was down to the amount of animal hair left by the previous owners. Not being well off enough to pay for new carpets I decided that I had to go forth and buy a Dyson - after all everyone I had spoken to raved about them.
I paid £223 for my DC08 from www.vacs4u.com and the picture above shows it off - it's small, compact and sits nicely in the storage space by the front door - something an upright cleaner wouldn't do.
The DC08 like all Dyson's doesn't use vacuum cleanerbags; instead the entire collection barrel is removed and emptied directly into the bin. The DC08 ...
