There isn't a specific listing for which record is meant here, but as it is under the electronica section, I chose this album to review. I don't know everything about the man, but it is fair to say he was a hugely talented composer and arranger of music, both for film scores and more conventional music only works.
As you will have seen from the above, this is a soundtrack to a great film of a great book. "Blade Runner" Given a slightly catchier title by the films producers - the book was called "Do Androids dream of electric sheep", the film was a huge success and this it's soundtrack must account for at least a part of this, because it is so distinctive. (Particularly when the date of its composition and recording are remembered).
As the title of the book maybe implies to you, the story deals with the relationship between humanity and robotic "life" forms - as perceived by the author - Phillip K Dick. "- How human are robots"? He asks.
Why am I talking about this in a review of the soundtrack? Because I believe that this informs the listener when hearing the music. These are abstract sounds of beauty. Digital sounds replace analogue "proper" musicians in all but one of the tracks - "One more kiss dear" which itself seems to be included in order to provide sharp contrast to the dehumanised world of Vangelis' haunting melodies.
It has a really haunting style to it and there is a unity between most of the tracks that provides shape to the album as a whole.
If I had to liken this to anything, it would be to whalesong. If whales were made of steel. The influence this album had on modern day dance music producers is legendary, and can be seen in Techno and particularly Drum and Bass - see Goldie and Grooverider, as well as John B. also house music. As well as the more abstract ambient sounds which owe a lot to this and other pioneers in the field such as Brian Eno.
Overall as this review notes, this is a soundtrack, and I would advise anyone who hasn't heard it to check out the film first, before buying. But in my humble opinion its worth a tenner of anyone's hard earned...
Advantages: A wide range of tastes Disadvantages: Not everyone will agree
be described as a cult soundtrack for a cult movie.
8. God Shuffled His Feet/Crash Test Dummies (1993)
I love this album, the smokey voice of Brad Roberts seems to strangley compliment the fantastic lyrics on the wonderful album which features the hit 'mmm mmm mmm mmm', you know the one with the kid who's hair had turned from black into bright white, altogether now 'mmm mmm mmm mmm', oo, sorry about that, i'm listening to it at the moment.
9. In Sides/Orbital (1997)
By far the most played Orbital album in my collection, this album always seems to find it's way into the CD selector, it's drifting pianos and wavy synths just relax your mind and let you push away your worries for the duration of the album.
10. Bladerunner OST/Vangelis (1994)
Yes the Vangelis original not the other pathetic release that was done by ...

Advantages: It all has meaning to me Disadvantages: No one will agree with any of it
a tune it would be Vangelis - Love Theme From Bladerunner........... so I doubt I will ever get a chance to smooch to it :o(
2) Best Cover Version -
This is a tough one! Seems that everything is a cover of something these days! I think it would be The Damned - Eloise, not that I can remember who did the original now :oP
3) Worst Cover Version -
This is a tough one! Seems that everything is a cover of something these days! :oP
The worst I think, to me anyway, would be whichever one of Gareth or Will sang Light My Fire, sorry fans of either I get them confused, must be my age! :oP
4) Best Male Vocal -
Argh! How can I pick just one?
If I want to melt it would be Jon Anderson from Yes. If I just wanted to drift away it would be Jim Morrison of the Doors. If it was for range it would be Eric Adams from Manowar. If it was ...
Advantages: You get to poke about in my CD collection Disadvantages: You will end up thinking I'm odd(er)
dear.. I honestly don?t know?. It might have been Appetite for Destruction by Guns & Roses, but don?t quote me on that!
MOST RELAXING
Sitting here looking at my CD collection on the other side of the room I cannot see anything particularly relaxing. Oh I?ve spotted one? Vangelis - Themes I would say would be my most relaxing one, but it is a little dusty.
MOST THOUGHT PROVOKING
I try not to think! I have music to stop me thinking! Does making up little stories to classical music count as thinking? If it does, then any of my classical stuff.
ONE YOU MOST REGRET BUYING
No regrets? no tears good bye? whoops that got me singing..
I don?t regret any of my music choices, even the poopiest CD has one good song on it :oP
