There isn't a specific listing for which record is meant here, but as it is under the electronica section, I chose this album to review. I don't know everything about the man, but it is fair to say he was a hugely talented composer and arranger of music, both for film scores and more conventional music only works.
As you will have seen from the above, this is a soundtrack to a great film of a great book. "Blade Runner" Given a slightly catchier title by the films producers - the book was called "Do Androids dream of electric sheep", the film was a huge success and this it's soundtrack must account for at least a part of this, because it is so distinctive. (Particularly when the date of its composition and recording are remembered).
As the title of the book maybe implies to you, the story deals with the relationship between humanity and robotic "life" forms - as perceived by the author - Phillip K Dick. "- How human are robots"? He asks.
Why am I talking about this in a review of the soundtrack? Because I believe that this informs the listener when hearing the music. These are abstract sounds of beauty. Digital sounds replace analogue "proper" musicians in all but one of the tracks - "One more kiss dear" which itself seems to be included in order to provide sharp contrast to the dehumanised world of Vangelis' haunting melodies.
It has a really haunting style to it and there is a unity between most of the tracks that provides shape to the album as a whole.
If I had to liken this to anything, it would be to whalesong. If whales were made of steel. The influence this album had on modern day dance music producers is legendary, and can be seen in Techno and particularly Drum and Bass - see Goldie and Grooverider, as well as John B. also house music. As well as the more abstract ambient sounds which owe a lot to this and other pioneers in the field such as Brian Eno.
Overall as this review notes, this is a soundtrack, and I would advise anyone who hasn't heard it to check out the film first, before buying. But in my humble opinion its worth a tenner of anyone's hard earned...
