Ever since I started shaving I have battled to overcome facial dry skin. In order to avoid being labelled a leper and closely resembling a flaking ghostly apparition I tried a plethora of dry skin products with little or no success. Some products even exacerbated the problem and the daily shave often left me feeling like an ageing Hollywood actress after her 12th cosmetic nip and tuck.
As skin complaints go it may not be the most worrying but facial dry skin sure does feel uncomfortable and looks unsightly. Try dancing under a neon light at a night-club with a dry face and you'll see what I mean. For a while the only alternative seemed to be not to shave at all but as everyone knows beards are for, well, people who want to hide their faces so it wasn't a choice I could make without suffering the huge humility of chuckles from acquaintances.
So after exhausting all the major brands I felt that dry skin was just a small annoyance than I would have to live with. Then one day I spotted a new bottle in my parents bathroom. It looked innocuous enough. Using quite tame yellow and green branding it promised to be an all over moisturiser for dry skin. With a multi-vitamin complex thrown in for good measure it sounded good. It was called Vaseline Intensive Care 'Dry Skin'. Funny name really, 'Dry Skin Remover' might have been more apt.
So in a flash I neatly removed the bottle and placed it in my weekend bag (under the cover of a T-shirt). This might sound a little cruel and unfair to the rest of the household but when you're a struggling student with a face that was crumbling at a faster rate than the great wall of china, swift action needed to be taken.
So on returning to college I waited with baited breath until the following mornings shave. When the moment arrived I applied the cream and boy did it feel cool on my blood soaked neck. I noticed the difference straight away. A small application made my skin feel supple without being greasy and the tight sensation I always got after shaving vanished within seconds.
That was almost a decade ago now and I'm still using the stuff. I am convinced that daily use makes you look younger and certainly adds some important vitamins to make your skin feel healthier. On the odd occasion that I stopped using 'Dry Skin' for a few days I start to take on the guise of a haggard old boot.
Vaseline Intensive Care 'Dry Skin' lotion is meant to be a hand and all over body lotion but by adapting it as an after shave balm I have one less thing to worry about. 'Dry Skin' now comes in a squeezable 75ml bottle that retails for about £1.95 but it will be the 200ml bottle that will always hold pride of place on my untidy beside table. For someone who has a healthy disregard for most cosmetics I have been completely sold on this fantastic product.
