Vaseline is a perfect, cheap alternative to moisturiser for all your dry bits and lips. It is 100% petroleum jelly with no colours, no fragrances- absolutely nothing added! Because of this, it is hypoallergenic and suitable for everyone to use- from babies right through to the elderly.
***History***
Petroleum jelly was discovered by Robert Chesebrough in 1859 in Brooklyn, New York. Within 6 months of discovery, Chesebrough had twelve wagons distributing the product, under the trade name Vaseline, across the state. In 1872, Chesebrough patented the process of making petroleum jelly. The patent of Vaseline used to be owned by Chesebrough-Pond's Inc but is now owned by Unilever.
***Range***
Vaseline produce not only petroleum jelly but have, more recently, introduced the Vaseline Intensive Care range, incorporating hand and body moisturising creams, deodorants and anti-perspirants. As this is a review of Vaseline Petroleum Jelly, I'll stick to talking about that. It comes in the following sizes:
- 'Pocket Size' 20g tin (Priced at 99p)
- 100g Tub (Priced at £1.39)
(Prices taken from www.boots.com) Huge range of sizes, huh? There may be more but these are the only two I've heard of. However, there is no need for any size other than these unless you are using it commercialy. The 20g size is perfect for slipping in your pocket and you'll never catch me outside without mine! It is mainly for using as a lip balm in this size, otherwise you will get through it very fast and it won't be as economical. If you use it as a body moisturiser, the 100g tub is for you. One of these will last you over a year, even using it every day, and only costs 40p more than the 20g size. Do beware when using it as any kind of moisturiser as it is very greasy and will leave marks on your clothes if you dress soon after applying it. Think of it as baby oil but not quite as greasy!
You can buy Vaseline from all good supermarkets and chemists, Boots, Superdrug, and cheap shops like Wilkinsons.
***Uses (there must be hundreds!)***
1. A general body moisturiser. Apply after showering or bathing to slightly damp skin to lock in moisture.
2. An intensive overnight treatment for dry hands and feet- just smooth on and cover with cotton gloves/socks before going to bed.
3. Clear mascara/lash conditioner.
4. Nail strengthener and cuticle softener.
5. Eyebrow tamer
6. An exfoliant- just add sea salt to a small amount of Vaseline and rub over your body, then rinse.
7. As a lip balm for dry, chapped lips. You can also use it to make your lipstick last longer by applying first, then blotting before applying lipcolour.
8. As a facial moisturiser for dry skin. It is marketed as non-comodogenic (won't clog pores) but although I haven't tried it on my face (I have oily skin) I'm not sure I believe it won't clog pores!
9. For a facial- apply Vaseline all over your face and cover with a warm, damp cloth. Leave for 10 minutes and rinse off well. My mum swears by this one- she says it really works!
10. To apply loose body glitter (only ever use special body glitter, not glitter for craft purposes!), mix with a little vaseline and smooth on.
11. Try applying a very very (I mean very) tiny amount of Vaseline to your eyelids underneath your eyeshadow- it will last longer. Or you can apply over eyeshadow to give your eyelids a shimmery look.
12. Use to soothe skin after shaving or waxing and after tweezing eyebrows.
13. Rub it along your hairline before colouring your hair to prevent the dye from colouring your skin.
14. As a make-up remover- it won't dry or irritate your skin and removes make-up quickly and effectively. It will even moisturise your skin as you clean!
15. To prevent nappy rash, apply Vaseline after changing your baby's nappy. It creates a protective, waterproof barrier. Vaseline is also gentle enough to use anywhere on a baby's body to prevent redness from dryness and harsh weather. It can also help soothe cradle cap.
16. Stop shampoo from getting in a baby's eyes by rubbing a line of Vaseline above the eyebrows. Shampoo will run off to the sides.
17. When you have a cold, your nose can often get dry and sore. A coating of Vaseline can help to prevent and soothe this.
18. Getting chewing gum in your hair is a nightmare! To get it out, rub Vaseline into the hair until the chewing gum slides out.
19. Vaseline can be used on leather to leave it soft, shiny and supple.
20. When painting around windows, apply a thin layer of Vaseline to the edge of the window and any paint splatters will wipe right off.
21. Stop the lids of nail varnish bottles sticking by applying a thin layer of Vaseline around the neck.
22. Apply to minor cuts and burns to speed healing.
23. It is also used in tattooing and piercing to let the needle pass across the skin or through the body more easily.
...(oh, pleeeeeease...) so my friendly Vaseline manages to curb this insidious trait leaving my lurvely hairy pins in tact and unchapped ready for their next waxing. As mentioned earlier, petroleum jelly has multiple uses. One of my good friends from the Virtual world of opinionating (drinks Newkie Broon and swears a lot) tells me it's great for popping on his lips. I'm sure I know what he means and it's a relief that his oral Mick Jaggers are kept ... ...it's hot enough yet, then Vaseline has been a Godsend for many years. Simply apply to scolded area for some relief. I can't say I've ever done this myself preferring to call an ambulance but if it's only a minor burn then Vaseline will help as it did those manly oil workers way back when. Those with bairns will also swear by the omnipresent Vaseline. I mean, nappy rash ain't pretty so a regular dose of our miracle product should make life easier ...

Vaseline is the cheapest, most undervalued cosmetic that I know. Most people have used at one time or another but, once we're past puberty, it is usually relegated to use as a lip balm (unless you're into using it as lubricant... it rots condoms - enough said!). It does, in fact have hundreds of uses, some of which I've listed below:
1. Moisturiser - Best watered down a little if you're in a hurry (preventing the oil slick look), this is one of ... ...original. Put a bit of vaseline on your face and it'll take off evn the most stubborn waterproof mascara without irritating your skin.
3. Lash Conditioner - Apply a small amount to your eyelashes before going to bed. Many models swear by this for thicker, glossier eyelashes.
4. Lip Balm - Always great on raw, chapped lips. Unperfumed and not too greasy. None of the sickly flavours that stop my man snogging me!
5. Anti-blister treatment - Long ...

I first tried Vaseline about 3 years ago because it was all over every magazine I was reading (not literally of course) as the best beauty product available.
I considered buying some for ages but eventually I could resist no more. So off I went to my local chemist and bought a HUGE tub of white petroleum jelly(I was told its exactly the same stuff) and I fell in love with it instantly. I just used it on my lips at first and they were lovely and ... ...tub, put a blob of vaseline in, then chop off a little piece of lipstick and stick that in the tub, then put the tub in the microwave and zap it for about a minute. Voila! A cheap new tinted lipgloss!)
Another of my favourite vaseline recipes is body scrub. I don't know what made me think of making that but i did and now i make it all the time. Get a blob of vaseline, throw in some salt or sugar, and maybe a few drops of essential oil if you have ...

Advantages: An effective way of keeping your skin soft on a budget Disadvantages: None
...Chesebrough called his new discovery Vaseline and now a pot of this versatile jelly is a must have for most family medicine cabinets. Vaseline is a blend of mineral oils, microcrystalline waxes and paraffin, the jelly stays firm until it reaches a temperature just slightly above body heat and then it starts to melt. The petroleum jelly then penetrates the skin and once it has settled into place filling gaps in our lipid barrier and areas in between ... ...Once you have applied Vaseline to your skin it protects it thoroughly in all winds and weather and keeps the moisture that is already in our skin locked safely in place. Vaseline is now a Unilever product, it has been on the market for over 130 years and is probably among one of the most versatile skin care products around. I have just read some very interesting facts that are news to me, our skin loses 200ml of water everyday as evaporation takes ...

What is Vaseline?
The name vaseline is a registered trademark of the Unilever brand, specialists in healthcare products.Vaseline pure petroleumjelly contains only one ingredient, Petrolatum. The jelly belongs to a group called emollients, which, by definition, are a substance that smoothes and softens the skin by the slow evaporation of water.
What is Petrolatum?
Petrolatum is also known as a soft paraffin. It is a mixture of hydrocarbons (a semi solid state), that feature carbon numbers above 25. Renowned for its healing properties, the US Food and Drug Administration have declared and approved its sale over the counter as a general skin protectant. The Petrolatum works by forming a film over the damaged area, protecting it while it heals.

Advantages: great for healling lips Disadvantages: can be slimey
i love vaseline pure petroleumjelly as it healed my lips really really quick and i was looking to go out in a couple of days. my lips were healed for that!! i bought for 99p at adsa. there are 3 different kinds of vaseline pure petroleumjelly you can buy. one is the green one which contains aloe vera and in my opinion is the best one. there is the blue one which i think is the origanal one. there is also the yellow one which contains sun protection. i would recommend this one if you are in the sun as it wil stop your lips from burning and becoming chapped and dry. you dont have to buy the big tubs you can buy small pocket sized tins!!! ...
Advantages: It literally melts into your skin and leaves skin soft and smooth, has a 100 uses, cheap Disadvantages: a little gloopy, not a great taste
Vaseline has been my favorite lip balm for the past 2 years, iv tried and tested others but they just don't result as well as the famous Vaselinepetroleumjelly.
The only ever problem i'v had with this buy has only been the gloopyness of it, but as long as you keep it in a dry, cool place and far away from the sun, you'll have no problem.
Over the years i'v been finding more and more great uses from this miracle in a tub.
1. an all over moisturizer to really soften your skin after a shower or bath
2. for hands, keeping hands soft and smooth and preventing dryness
3. elbows to smooth out cracked elbows
4. lips
5. for your hair- to calm down frizziness and before you dye your hair, rub it around your hairline for no stains after dying.
6. for eyebrows and eyelashes, to keep eyebrows in place and to moisturize eyelashes
7. sore heels ...
