"Great medium hatchback for a family car"

I must disagree with the previous review of this product. Firstly, it must be stated that it is not a particularly fast car by any means. The 1.3 turbo diesel engine has virtually nothing up until 2,500 RPM, but after it reaches this speed the turbo begins to kick in and while it doesn't exactly go like a rocket, it is enough to get you around. Then again I doubt you were buying a diesel to go racing in anyway.

The car is more suited to motorway driving, where if you need to accelerate you should be well within the power band of the engine. In fact it can out-accelerate my 1.6 petrol from about 70mph, and if it is legal to do so, go well on to 100mph. Likewise, the fuel economy is much better in these conditions - the needle on the fuel gauge barely moved over my 80 mile trip. In built up areas it isn't so great, and you do notice the lack of power at low revs a lot more.

The interior is typical Vauxhall - satisfactory but nothing to write home about. The seats are comfortable and the driving position allows enough room, but the downside is they are difficult to clean if you happen to get them dirty. It comes with a CD player and air conditioning as standard - something I missed about my old Astra, but then again that is to be expected these days. I personally like the new style - it is certainly an improvement over the old one, however I won't say too much more about this as it is really a matter of individual opinion.

Overall, the Astra is a good all rounder, it's only real disadvantage being that lack of pace from a standstill. It is cheap to insure and doesn't glug through fuel, and like most diesels, it will hold it's value well up to a higher mileage than petrol models. If you do enough miles to justify buying a diesel it is well worth considering.
