Great seond-hand car for a student - girls view
Advantages: Cheap, Cheap, Cheap, doesn't look too bad Disadvantages: interior, quite big
...However, I bought a Vauxhall Astra as my first car after being a student and it cost only £250.00 which was good for a car which was only 5 years old.
The insurance was reasonable considering that I was a new driver. Also the tax was not too bad.
The car lasted me three years and in the whole time, mechanically the car was fine. There were a few problems with the clutch, but this was fixed at a cost of about £100.00.
I do not know that much about ... ...nothing wrong with it the last time I took it to the garage. For a car that was 8 years old I thought that this was pretty impressive.
The car is not too bad too look at. However the interior is pretty awful. Nothing glam just the necessities. However you get what you pay for.
The only major problem I foud with the car was that it was quite large, and as a result (and being a girl, i hear you cry) I found it really hard to park. I am 5foot7 and ...

Vauxhall Astra SRi 1.8 hatchback
Advantages: Very reliable car Disadvantages: fuel consumption not great
Being over 6 feet tall, I found this car very comfortable, with all the gadgets in good locations and the seat being comfortable over long distances. Very comfortable to drive at any speed, and stops very safely. The performance is there when required and will cruise as required, I found the gear ratio good for the 30mph mark, avoiding constant changing up and down. I got a good feeling of control from this car, although it felt a little light on ... ...of junctions - nothing too serious. The overall look and appeal of the car is long lasting, this car will fit those people who change cars regularly or it will last for many years without loosing its style. The fuel consumption in the petrol model is average, not particularly good or bad. I personally like this car and would consider buying another one at a later date. ...

Vauxhall Astra 1997
Advantages: everything Disadvantages: nothing
This car is brilliant. I had it for a year in 98 before giving it to my brother. It started first time every time and NEVER had one problem during the whole time I had it. I would deffinatly reccomend it to a friend. This car is not like most vauxhalls. It's nippy reliable and looks great. I waxed mine every sunday and replaced the oil and cooland every 3 months. I bought it with 5,900 miles on it and gave it to my brother (who sadly passed away ...

Astra 1.7Dti Envoy - Excellent Economy
Advantages: Drives Nice, Great Economy, Cheap Tax, Cheap Insurance Disadvantages: Not as quick as some.
...the back wheel arches, which Vauxhall will not fix under warranty. This is because, although the car has been serviced by a main dealer from new, the Fleet Company , didn't pay for the annual body inspections, so the body inspections are not stamped. This is a minor problem, but not to be expected on a car of this age. Astras have always suffered from rusty arches, and it seems that this model will be no exception, as I have seen a few others like ... ...a visit to the local vauxhall dealership, i was told that it was dirty antifreeze, but I'm not to sure. Whilst I have no symptoms of Head Gasket Failure (which is costly), I believe the problem may lie in the oil cooler. Apparently these are prone to failure, but cause no long term problems, other than some slight oil in the water. I'm just keeping an eye on it.
SUMMARY
If you're still with me, I can confirm that this is an excellent car, which ...
