do i need to break in the engine for the fuel consumption to be what it is said to be mpg?

hi i just bought a Vauxhall Corsa 1.3 CDTi 16v ecoFlex 5 dr and was told that it is well good on fuel but when i got it, its only doing 35mpg and was told that i had to break it in 2000miles before i get this, im at 1700 and see no differance is this right? i was told new cars dont need breaking in and would see the fuel using to be good straight away. thanks simon
