It was back in 2002 when I had to make a choice of replacing my Saab 9-3 Aero or my MINI Cooper (both 3 door cars) and embrace the world of parenthood and dull, practical cars. My world sank as I had to trawl the showrooms and sit in Scenics, Galaxys, Picassos, Streams etc - lugging an empty child seat and pushchair to make sure that they fitted.
We wanted a car with automatic transmission car and in the end plumped for a Zafira 1.8i Elegance in Star Silver. I didn't even bother with a test drive as the previous year I had a contract hire 1.8i auto Zafira for about 6 months and from my vague goldfish memory, recalled that the car was "OK" to drive.
I got a good deal on the car and as always my wallet led my heart. £18,800 list. (Metallic, Auto, ESP, Side Airbags and Curtain Airbags) The deal was £16,800 with 0% finance over 3 years with 40% deposit and free carpet mats, mudflaps and headlamp protectors.
On picking up the car I was underwhelmed by it's boxy shape and conservative looks. I was even more amazed at how wallowy the ride was compared to other cars I had driven. I remember thinking: "What the hell have I done!" when I drove home from the dealership.
But 2 years and 25,000 miles later I have to admit that it is one of the best cars for it's purpose. And you just get used to the handling and ride and accept that it does what it says on the box.
The Flex 7 seating is the major USP over the competition. We only occasionally use it but it has proved it's worth. Also the folding front passenger seat makes a useful baby change unit or to carry long loads when worshipping at the Temple of Ikea.
There are areas of the car that aren't that good:
Creating the full 7 seats involves removing the load cover, the load carpet mat, sliding the rear bench forward, folding up the 3rd row seats, opening the seat belt latch cover and sliding the headrests up - leaving virtually no luggage space and nowhere to store the carpet and load cover.
The auto transmission allied with the 1.8 engine gives good economy and reasonable performance in town but it is a bit asthmatic on motorway inclines causing the 'box to constantly change gear. In hindsight I should have gone for the 2.2 litre engine.

The Zafira is also a relatively narrow car and 3 adults will become familiar.
I also had the spare wheel stolen (the Zafira shares the same wheels as the Astra, thus creating a large market for stolen wheels). It's much easier to steal than other Ciao reviewers have said - a big screwdriver to bend the U bracket is sufficient.

"They all do that Sir" was the response. Servicing is cheap at £112 for the 10k service, I still have 3mm of tread on the front tyres at 25k and I'm still waiting for the service indicator to light up for the next service. Amazing when I used to shell out £450 for a Saab service and buy new tyres every 8,000 miles!
The interior and trim has worn well and marks easily wipe off. I've also had the car tinted - trading pimptastic looks for a cool interior.
Overall the Zafira makes and ideal family car - big enough for the kids and shopping and smaller than a full size MPV.
Advantages: seperates the kids, stops the fighting Disadvantages: luggage space when all seats in use
Mother of 3 wonderfully energetic children (or little hellers as we like to call them).
We have always had family saloons upto now, but the kids are growing and practically sitting on each others laps, so we decided to do the sensible thing and buy a Zafira. What a good decision if I do say so myself.
There is ample leg room for all in this lovely car and good head height. When you have a husband like mine at 6'7" this comes in handy. He is able ... ...his stomach.
The seats in the rear are only child size seats, so not suitable for an adult on a long journey, (but if it is getting your friends home from the pub on a Friday night I am sure they will still be grateful of the ride).
The only fault I have with this vehicle is the lack of luggage space when the rear seats are up. You can fit a few shopping bags in the back but when you lift the boot they have a tendancy to fall out all over the floor. ...

...one.
Built on the Vauxhall Astra platform, the Zafira makes the most of this fairly short wheel base in two ways. Firstly, the bodywork is pushed out firmly to all four corners so no space is wasted on stylish curves (see Citroen Picasso). Secondly, Vauxhall invented the Flex7 seating system, which is very flexible and extremely easy to live with - and fundamentally the secret to the Zafira's success.
Basically, you have two standard front seats, ... ...The interior is standard Vauxhall black plastic but we ordered black seats with red insert panels which looks better than it sounds, brightens the cabin up immensely, and the best bit is that even after six months of carting the tribe around, it has worn very well with scarcely a mark on it.
Airconditioning, electric front windows, electric wing mirrors and CD player with controls on the steering wheel take care of the creature comforts. Remote ...

...neighbours). Unfortunately it took the Vauxhall garage, three diagnostic tests to find the fault. In the meantime they first advised me it was the change in temperature. Then it was a fault in the rear heated window. The rear window was replaced (over £200 via our windscreen insurance) The problem continued and was finally put down to the heating element in the side, rear window. That was replaced, and after much negotiating and pointing out that ... ...I wasn't charged. Incidentally Vauxhall would have charged me over £400 to have the rear window replaced! Next the idling control went wrong. Vauxhall 's charge was £50 for the test plus around £400 to have the problem sorted out. A local garage did it all for around £300 instead (and weren't patronising, but that might be due to the beard and hat I wore!!). The final straw was when the car cut out and gently costed to a gentle halt with black smoke ...

Advantages: Interior space, flexibility Disadvantages: Utilitarian styling, small boot 7 up
I bought this car after months of research and test drives of various MPVs. It handles well for such a high vehicle and has a nippy willing engine. Interior space is excellent, loads of legroom for the kids in the back and a huge boot if the rear-most seats are folded into the floor. With the 7 seats in use, luggage space is restricted, but the benefit of having those 2 extra seats there all the time is priceless. General spec is adequate, air-con ... ...and well-built. It feels solid and is designed to stand up to boisterious kids. Fuel consumption is fine for this size vehicle, considering the weight it can carry. I have done 2500 miles so far and have got low 30s around town and high 30s on long main road trips, both figures include some use of air-con.
Sitting high up with a good all-round view makes it easy to park and manoeuvre, the square shape helps. It is only 2 inches longer than an Astra ...

...I really like the Vauxhall brand, so it came as no suprise to people around me when I opted for a Vauxhall Zafira for my family car. I loved the styling and more to the point the roomy interior of a car that from the outside doesn't look as overbearingly huge as some of the other MPV's (Multi Purpose Vechicles) that are around.
I have 3 children, so a roomy interior, with good seating and good boot space is a major priority for our household. Thats ... ...anyone who has driven a Vauxhall before, or not will find the dash board easy to navigate. No over the top or hidden, knobs and switches to be found. Might be too plain though for the regular gadget geek :)
Not everything is great with the Vauxhall Zafira though! There are plenty of problems abound. The biggest question has to be engine reliablity. Unless your car is regularly serviced, a lovely little spanner stays lit all the time, and the word ...

The VauxhallZafira is one of the most popular compact MPV (multi-purpose vehicle) on the market. Out of all its competitors it accounts for 40% of all 7 seater MPV Sales.
*~*~*Which model am I reviewing?*~*~*
I am reviewing the VauxhallZafira Life 1.8i 16v petrol model with 140bhp that we hired for 4 days.
It is the latest model from Vauxhall after recently being revamped last year, it is a 5 door model with a seating capacity for 7 passengers.
The Zafira does come in different engine sizes as you would expect the smallest being a 1.6i and the largest being a 2.0i Turbo with 240bhp.
*~*~*Styling*~*~*
The New redesigned Zafira is a lot sleeker and sexier than the previous model however it is still not that easy on the eye.
Less aggressive styling makes it a bit more family car orientated than people carrier, also ...
Advantages: Sheer Varsatility,Loads of space,7 seater Disadvantages: Blind spot at A pillars
The car I have is petrol.
I have had this car for just over a year from new and to say that its a joy to drive would be an understatement.
My original dislike was the feel of the steering wheel as it felt a little plastic and didn't feel right, however apart from that little grudge the car handled very well.
If you are used to driving smaller cars prior to this, it feels a little heavy and in a strong wind on corners it also feels quite a bit hevyer
The car also has a lot of room inside so you don't feel cramped and also the passengers don't feel cramped either, you also need to keep checking you speedo as it doesn't take long to get upto speed.
The two 'extra seats' are located under the floor of the boot - you slide the whole middle bench forward and just pull one or both levers up, slide your middle seat back ...
Advantages: So spacious, good driving position Disadvantages: poor quality of interior plastics
We needed to upgrade from a small family hatch following the arrival of our third child. Our primary need was for there to be enough space for three children (ages 0 to 8) to sit comfortably in the rear. For us, the third row of seats wasn't a priority, although the two older children think it's great to "sit at the back". The ease of design makes the rear seats dissapear into the floor. They stay there to give a cavernous space for the baby's pram and loads of space left for the weekend away or to do the weekly shopping. I really can't knock this car for what it does. OK, it doesn't look sexy, and it doesn't stand out from the crowd, but if you're after a practical spacious family car you really should take a look at the zafira. ...
