We now have a Vauxhall Zafira Design with 2-litre diesel engine. It is dark blue in colour with bright blue cloth seats (I can’t stand leather seats in cars, they get too hot for me!) I have taken a look at the Vauxhall site – www.buypower.vauxhall.co.uk - and the current price for this model is about £17.000.

Before I start this opinion I want to make it clear that this is NOT a technical ‘car’ opinion. I don’t drive and I have minimal knowledge of the workings of the humble motorcar, so this one is written strictly from the passenger’s point of view!
I’ll begin at the beginning, always a good place to start don’t you think?
Dave, my partner, works for a firm who provide him with a company car and his was due for renewal.
We discussed the options within the price range and decided that the Zafira was the one for us since we have my parents living with us and we needed a vehicle which had four easy to board, comfortable seats. Dave’s firm initially said that he couldn’t have an MPV despite it being cheaper than some of the cars they were offering but we put up a fight and eventually got what we wanted and we are SO glad that we did!

As regards the technical stuff, as I said earlier I don’t know a lot about the workings or cars so this bit won’t last long!
The main things from my point of view are the safety features. She has ABS – anti lock braking system – which I once saw demonstrated and have rarely been so impressed. It really does make a difference in the way she holds the road round bends. The other big plus is the fact that there are both driver and passenger air bags. Now this is something I hope I never try out, but it’s nice to know it’s there! There is also power assisted steering but that’s pretty standard these days I think.
The fuel consumption is very good even when driving round the town and she’s very nippy for such a big car! Dave cruises at a steady 80 on the motorway and she’s still got plenty of acceleration if needed.
Right that’s the technical stuff out of the way – I told you it wouldn’t take long!
From the passengers point of view there are lots of advantages with our new arrival so this is, hopefully, the interesting bit!
Starting with the obvious – this car is seriously comfortable! We had to use a Toyota Celica whilst we were waiting for the Zafira to arrive and whilst it looked great it was not comfortable particularly on long journeys.
The Zafira will carry a maximum of seven people including the driver, although we usually just travel with either 2 or 4 of us in the car. With all the other cars we have used dad always had to get in the front seat as he has trouble with his knees and hips and needed the extra room for manoeuvrability. Not so with the Zafira! It is just as easy and roomy to get in and out of the back seats, as it is the front.
The car is quite high off the ground, which not only makes for better views when travelling, but also makes stepping in and out of the car so much easier for us all.
There is plenty of legroom for us all and the front seats are obviously fully adjustable. The third seat in the centre of the back seats folds down to make an armrest, complete with cup holders, if required.
When my sister and her partner visited us last weekend we used six of the seven seats for the first time. I sat in the very back and was still comfortable - the seats even have headrests! If the middle row of seats are back as far as they will go the legroom in the back is restricted and I wouldn’t want to travel too far like that, but there is enough room in the middle to have those seats slightly further forward giving that little bit of extra room in the very back.
It was really nice to have visitors and all be able to go out in the same car too. Not only for the fact that we could all enjoy one another’s company but also because most people have to travel a fair distance to visit us it’s nice if we can do the driving whilst they’re here.
The car has air conditioning, which has individual controls for the front and middle rows of seats. There are also individual lights for each seat too.
Even the windscreen wipers are good on this one! If you imagine a conventional pair of wipers, they both move in the same direction don’t they? Well ours don’t – they move from the centre outwards if you can understand what I mean. This makes the passenger’s visibility as good as the driver’s.
The car comes with a CD player and radio as standard with steering wheel mounted controls, which is obviously a lot safer than leaning over to adjust the volume whilst driving.
Coming back to the fact that there are a maximum of seven seats in the Zafira, it is also possible to have any combination of seats from one to seven available for use. Obviously the driver’s seat always remains in place, he does need to be there, but the rest of the seats can be arranged in any way you like. If you know anything about statistics at all you’ll know that this would give you 22 different combinations.
The very back two seats fold into the floor of the car to make a very roomy boot. The centre row of seats will either fold, individually or all together, or all slide forward against the back of the front two seats.
This has been a godsend to us as we are still working on the house. We have just had the two front seats up and flattened the rest to take old furniture to the tip. We even managed to get a huge dining room unit in! Mind you Dave did have to drive with his knees under his chin, so it’s a good job the tip is only down the road!
We have fetched things from the local DIY shops in all shapes and sizes! When we fetched the new skirting board we flattened the front passenger seat plus the one behind it to get it into the car and I sat behind Dave on the way home from B & Q.
There are also two rails on the roof of the car for fitting a roof box or roof rack if we ever need it.
There are a few smaller bits and pieces that make the journey that bit more comfortable too. All the seats have their own cup holders, which are ideal for stowing a small bottle of water. There is plenty of other storage room – there is space in each of the two front doors to keep stuff as well as a small but quite deep tray to the side of each of the front seats.
The only other thing that we do want to get is the chiller bag, which can be plugged into the boot. This would be useful if we were going out for the day, but would also be good when doing the shopping!
Well, I think that’s about it. I hope this has been of some use to you if you’re thinking of buying a Zafira. Often the brochures and the garage staff know all the technical stuff, but sometimes you need to know how it’s going to feel to ride in the car and how adaptable it’s going to be to your circumstances.
Advantages: Flexible design, Large load capacity when empty, Good fuel consumption Disadvantages: Poor driver left/right visibility, Poor load when full of passengers
The last time my company car came up for review, I had to find a vehicle that would still assist me to do my job (IT Field Support), but also able to carry my family of five kids. After carefully looking into price, features and versatility the Zafira came out as a clear winner, here is why. Price The Zafira range starts at under £13,000, which for an MPV is amazingly good value within itself, but when you include things like air-con as standard ... ...'Comfort 2.0Dti 16v,' which was £16,500 at the time, but can now be picked up for about £1000 cheaper. The main reason that the car is cheaper is that the basic design is based around the existing Astra range, so it did not need to be designed from scratch. Features on this model 'Flex-7' seating, which allows you to convert the car from a 1-seater to 2-seater to 5-seater to 7-seater, or just about any combination in between with the minimum of fuss. ...

Vauxhall Zafira Elegance 2.0 DTI
I originally meant to write this report 7 months ago, immediately after taking delivery of my new Zaffy as I was so impressed with it. Now that it is run in after covering some 10,000 miles,I feel I am in a better position to pass comment. From the outset,I had never really taken any notice of MPV’s/People Carriers or what ever other label takes your fancy. I had been a Vokswagen man for the past 17 years, driving ... ...chance we were passing a Vauxhall garage (Gillespies of Lenzie,Nr Glasgow) so went in and had a look. Before we knew it,we were all away for a test drive for about 30 mins. There was no pressure from the salesman (Eddie Clements) and we eventually put pen to paper and bought it. I had never had a diesel before but sadly, there were no petrol ones available at the time and I guess I was just a bit impatient,so this time decided just to go for it. I ...

...vehicle. I bought a Vauxhall Zafira Elegance 2.0 DTi from new in July 2003. This was the top of the range diesel and I added to it Vauxhall's Technical pack, Winter Pack and Climate Control. Vauxhall of course are part of the American General Motors (GM) Company and you can find the occasional GM sticker on it. Other parts of the world know them as Opel. ...had been running well.
Vauxhall initially refused to repair the car because they said the car had run out of oil. As it had been checked 4 days before and was fine this seemed a little ridiculous. My husband had checked the car from cold, whereas the manual says run the engine, leave for 5 mins then check the level. However the AA said this would not make a significant difference. The manual also says you need to check the oil level every 600 miles ... ...- we bought up with Vauxhall but they would neither confirm or deny this. However they did say that in the new Vectra hand book they warn that the diesel engine can use a lot of oil - this was no comfort. I have found more information on the internet to support this finding (through doing a search on lycos and ask jeeves).
Eventually Vauxhall stripped the engine. Because they were unable to tell 100% how the engine failed they replaced the engine ...

Advantages: Loads of torque for towing, excellent seating system, looks great Disadvantages: Not as much interior space as some rivals
The Zafira SRi 2.0DTi was the 1st modern car to come to my home since 1981, and it doesn't dissapoint!
Although initially dubious about buying a new car, this one came up second hand with £1000 worth of black leather seats (The front two are heated), bodykit, dvd player AND the diesel engine I was looking for (not to mention the brilliant 'Flex-7' seating arrangement system). I had to have it. At a smidgen under £14k it was a bargain too.
The original criteria for buying the car were that it could seat 7 comfortably and have the power and torque to tow a fully laden trailer, this car fitted the bill perfectly. And more!
The SRi is distinguished from the rest of the Zafira range by its sexy (If I'm allowed to use that word for a people carrier?) bodykit, identical to that featuring on the 200bhp GSi Turbo edition ...
Advantages: Economical, does what it sets out to do. Disadvantages: Boring. Poorly Equipped
Not convinced that this vehicle is available as16v, hence the lack of reviews, but here goes:
This was a 16k three-year-old second-hand purchase very much as a case of head over heart. It is not the most charismatic of vehicles, and is somewhat basic by modern standards. It fulfills the brief, though, in that it has a wheel at each corner and gets three adults and four progeny from A to B in reasonable comfort fairly economically.
I've just done 490 miles of mixed motorway, A-road and queueing on 45 litres of diesel, which compares favourably with my old indirect injection 1.9D Citroen ZX.
This machine has a common rail engine and cat and IIRC pays £165 a year road tax for CO2 emissions. I'm not entirely surprised, as it's basically an Astra estate with a higher roof, and thus a larger frontal area to cause drag, so economy ...
Advantages: Very impressive prices and choice Disadvantages: No test drives, interesting service
My own experience with Motorpoint is a rather unusual (but still positive) one, only really having bought from them by accident.
I had spent some months deciding on exactly the car I wanted, and started scouring the region for a late model Vauxhall (not imported Opel) Zafira2.0dti Elegance 7 seater MPV in Ultra Blue with beige interior trim instead of the more usual black.
Having looked round all the local Vauxhall dealers (and phoned all those a little distance away), I had drawn a blank until I happened upon Motorpoint's website. According to their stock list, they had exactly the model I was hunting for, only 8000 miles on the clock, and at a price that represented a £6000 discount from new list price, so I rang up to enquire.
Disappointment number 1. Although it was advertised as in stock, I was told it wasn't due into ...
