In the winter I am more than happy to get out the old razor and hack away at my legs in order for them to not to resemble a rainforest. However, in the summer I treat myself. Instead of my trusty Bic, I endure pain for smooth pins!
A few weeks ago, I had my first wax of the season at my local college. I was a guinea pig for an hour while the young student smothered my legs with hot wax and stripped away contentedly for what seemed like hours. The course obviously doesn’t include customer relations, as she spent the next hour telling me about her mother’s impending wedding after meeting her husband to be three months ago. I smiled sweetly and listened; silently wishing I was back at home in the shower scraping away at my legs until I clogged up the plughole with my hirsute offerings. Enough was enough; I had to be brave and go solo.
So yesterday I was in Tesco’s doing the weekly shopping when I noticed the depilatory creams, shaving products and waxes. I quickly bypassed most of these and spied the Veet Roll On Ready to Use Wax. I had seen the advert on the TV and it looked really simple to do. The price also swayed my decision as at £7.99 for 100ml it seemed a lot cheaper than £6.50 every month to have my legs waxed at the college. As with all waxes you apply the product onto the area to be waxed, then lay the white strip over the waxed area. You must then pull the skin taut, before ripping the strip away, and with any luck - complete with an assortment of hairs.
Veet works a little differently than most hot waxes which need to be warmed first. I’ve used these products in the past, and have had several mishaps with too hot wax burning my shins. The microwave is a brilliant invention, but not good for heating wax. Believe me, this hurts! The sticky mess you usually get with waxes that need a special spatula to administer the gunk is also a major disadvantage. I once decided to wax my legs while sitting on my bed. I left several trails of what can only be described as sticky cobwebs, adhering my favourite duvet. Not a pretty site I can tell you.
Veet actually works at room temperature so does not need to be warmed first. This means that you can use the wax anywhere, without having to worry about having access to a microwave or oven. I decided to use this product downstairs in my living room. My partner was sitting happily watching the football, and there I was, applying gooey gunk to my legs – how romantic. We have obviously passed the stage of worrying about appearances. That’s love for you!
The product comes complete with a very detailed instruction leaflet, which also has pictures so that you are guaranteed not to make any mistakes.
How to apply the wax ^*^*^*^*^*^*^*^*^*^*^*
Once you have settled down in a comfy position ready to rip away, you take off the orange lid and are faced with the applicator cap. You click this down on a flat surface so that it is totally secure. This is easier said than done. I realised that if it isn’t completely secure, wax will leak everywhere except where you want it to be. I tried clicking the cap down and noticed it was only in place on one side. I pushed it down on the laminate floor, but it still didn’t budge. The easiest option was to take the lid of completely, which was not an easy job, and start again. Once I had mastered this the applicator cap clicked into place. Once it is in place, it should be impossible to remove the applicator, I didn’t try to challenge this fact though, but I bet if you used a hammer and a chisel it would be a breeze!
When the applicator cap is in place you are ready to start the waxing process. The instructions tell you to tip the container upside down for two minutes while encased in the orange lid; this prevents the wax from spilling. I found that it took longer than two minutes to work. I waited five minutes in all, and still had to squeeze the bottle to get it to flow properly.
Once you think the wax is flowing well, you can test an area on one of the waxing strips before adding it to your leg. I also tried this, but found it just stuck to the strip without actually moving. I got bored doing this after several minutes, so decided to grab the bull by the horns, and just apply the wax to my leg. This worked well; my leg was obviously more pliable than the strip.
The instructions say that you should apply the wax slowly down the leg in the direction of the hair growth (from your knee to your foot). The layer of wax should be quite thin and should not be any longer than the paper strip you are using.
I applied the wax and found this to be very easy to do once past the initial first stage. The wax was sticky but without having to use a spatula, the mess was minimal. Next I applied the strip and followed instructions to the book, by pulling my skin taut and whipping off the paper strip. My hairs were not exceptionally long when I waxed (they should be about 4mm long) but came off very easily.
You repeat this same process until all of the leg is hair free. The strips can be used three times to take off layers of wax and are reusable afterwards as they can be washed.
I found the bottle to become quite messy while I was waxing. You have to rest the bottle in the orange lid while you are using the strips so that the product flows normally. I would not really want to leave it anywhere else though, as the wax seeps out and clogs up the lid. This can get very sticky. Despite this disadvantage, the wax is water ‘rinsable’, so when I washed up afterwards, the wax came off very quickly. The strips are also reusable, all you have to do is wash them under warm water and the hairs and wax come off easily. I thought this was quite disgusting when I first thought about it, but it’s a really good idea and very economical.
The bottle is quite large at 100ml, and I think this will last quite a while, especially as you will only use the wax every month or so. At the price it is, I feel it is quite a bargain.
Does it hurt? ^*^*^*^*^*^*^
I can honestly say waxing is pain free. You feel a mild discomfort, which I wouldn’t describe as pain in the slightest. However, my partner did not believe me and declined the offer of a back, crack and sack wax!
The wax may cause your skin to become red, but this is normal.
Where else can you use the product? ^*^*^*^*^*^*^*^*^*^*^*^*^*^*^*^*^*^*^*
Veet Roll On can also be used on the underarms and bikini line, but the strips need to be cut in half.
Tips ^*^*^
It is best to exfoliate your legs or whatever area you will be waxing 24 hours before you use the product.
Use a moisturiser afterwards to ensure soft and soothed legs.
Advantages ^*^*^*^*^*^*^
Easy to apply Reusable strips Easy to wash No heating required Smooth, hair free legs Lasts for up to four weeks
Disadvantages ^*^*^*^*^*^*^*^*
Gets a bit sticky Hard to click the applicator in place No case to store strips when not in use Does take a long time
Who should not use these strips? ^*^*^*^*^*^*^*^*^*^*^*^*^*^*^*^*^
Men who can’t stand a bit of pain - wusses Diabetics The elderly People taking medicine for acne Pregnant women can use this product but it may cause bruising The first one was a joke; the rest are all-true.
Where can I buy Veet? ^*^*^*^*^*^*^*^*^*^*^*^*
All major supermarkets, Boots, Superdrug and other similar outlets.
Advantages: convenient, easy to use, good price for the amount of wax Disadvantages: takes too long

...was tempted to buy the Veet Express Roll-on waxing system for the simple reason that it was in the local Pound shop for the princely sum of, yes you've guessed it, £1. What a bargain, even if it didn't work it wasn't costing the earth, so I bought a pack to try it out.
Once I returned home I opened up the box to see what I got for my quid, and in the pack there was the roll-on applicator filled with 100ml of a sugar based wax, 12 strips for removing ... ...to be hygienically sealed; perhaps the strips (and instructions) were too well sealed as I found myself having to use my teeth to open them.
Once I'd torn my way to the instructions, I followed them and unsealed the top of the applicator which was a simple case of lifting a foil tab which then revealed a gloop that looked a bit like treacle. It was then time to click the roller into place, which is an easy enough task as long as you place the base ...

Quick review of Veet Express Roll-On Ready to Use Wax
Fed up of constantly shaving i saw this new veet roll-on wax in boots and thought why not? Usually about £8 but it was about £6.50 in a 1/3 off sale and as soon as I got home I heated it in the microwave and tried it. I followed every word of the instructions but trying first on my legs I applied the wax, pulled back one of the wax strips and no hair was removed! It's rubbish! I tried it again to see if it would get better but it was just the same. I'm really dissapointed as i wasted over a fiver on it and it didn't do anything. I've been dissapointed with veet wax strips before, but thought this was different. DON'T BUY IT! ...
