...don't want to be lugging a ton of metal legs around if you're tired before you even remove the lens cap. Nor do you want to keep leaving it at home because it's a bit heavy to carry around. The problem is, a lightweight tripod certainly isn't going to be the most stable - some say the heavier the better! The Velbon VGB-3 isn't exactly light at just under 2kg (4.3)lb, but if you are reasonably fit it doesn't present too many weight issues. Other, more expensive tripods are generally lighter, due to different construction material. If you are generally going to be using the tripod at home, in the garden or straight out of the back of the car, weight isn't really much to worry about.
Material - Generally tripods are constructed of either Carbon-fibre or aluminium/magnesium. As well as the weight issue mentioned above, carbon fibre are...

Advantages: Strong. Fairly Light. Offers great support and flexibility. Disadvantages: Doesn't come with a head.
...up as extra support for the tripod. Using it with the biggest lens I own (a 55-200mm sigma telephoto) doesn't make it struggle at all. In fact with the head I'm using (804RC2) it feels as easy and manoeuvrable as my other smaller lenses. I compare this of course to the last tripod I was using, a cheap Velbon Model, which struggled to support my telephoto lens.
The price I paid for this tripod was 79.99GBP, perhaps a bit pricey when you consider it doesn't come with its own head, but than you have to take into account that it is a pro model and most pro models don't come with their own attached heads. I guess this doesn't pigeon-hole you to keeping the head you got when you brought the tripod, and offer you more versatility in the long run, since you can choose to buy the head that best fits your needs. But when buying this tripod you...

...My tripod is the Cullmann 54100 Euro Uno Stitiv/Tripod
This is the first time I have purchased a tripod of my own, having researched the market I decided to buy mine at a Photographers Exhibition so at a reduced price.
Having only previously used second hand tripods found in charity shops, made of heavy metal and designed in a bulky style. I was very pleased when testing the newer tripods, that weight has been considerably reduced, and the style and shape has been streamlined for convenient handling and transporting.
The Cullmann 54100 has a handy carry handle that allows easy transport. It is also extremely light. Not so light that it topples over when standing, but light enough to be manageable.
Easy to use, the camera fixes nicely into place via a plastic square that detaches from the tripod and fixes to the bottom...

Great science fiction series come in all shapes and sizes, some become run away successes, some last a series or two, some just one. I’ve loved them all, Doctor Who, Blake’s Seven, Star Cops (a great series that should have lasted longer), and many more. more
The Manfrotto 190PRO is a great tripod. Straight out of the box you can tell your holding a quality product. The legs, made form Aluminium feel solid and have a very fine polished finish to them. Folded up and without a tripod head it's not too heavy,... more
