I love to read, and Velocity was one of the best thrillers I have read in a while. The story is basically that a normal guy who works at a bar has his life turned upside down in a couple of seconds... more

Advantages Advantages A decent idea, which rattles along at a furious pace

Disadvantages Disadvantages Would lose a lot if re-read

I've been a fan of Dean Koontz for a number of years. Not devoted enough to rush out and buy his latest novel on the day of release in hardback, it's true, but enough that I make sure none of his paperback releases pass me by. Like many authors who have been writing as long as he has, sometimes he delights me and sometimes he disappoints me. In the last couple of years, he has done more of the former, but that wasn't always true. He had a bad run a few years ago that made me conclude that the thicker a Dean Koontz novel is, the worse it's likely to be. So I was pleased to note that "Velocity" ... more

    Advantages Advantages Excellent thrilling story

Disadvantages Disadvantages Koont'z expression of overly descriptive words sometimes.

I grabbed this book as a real bargain from a cheapy bookshop for all of 99p after reading a review written on here that caught my attention. I needed only two sentences to get me hooked on the idea and read the book. These were: "If you don't take this note to the police, I will KILL a lovely blonde schoolteacher somewhere in Napa County." "If you do take this note to the police, I will instead KILL an elderly woman active in charity work." Just those two lines made me realise this was going to be something I would really enjoy and as the author was Dean Koontz, whom I have read favourably ... more

Advantages Advantages Keeps you reading, keeps you thinking . . .

    Disadvantages Disadvantages None

THE AUTHOR Dean Koontz started his writing career with the help of his wife; "I'll support you for five years," she said "and if you can't make it as a writer in that time, you'll never make it." Needless to say after those five years there was no need for his wife to work at all. Koontz was born and raised in Pennsylvania, U.S.A; and currently lives with his wife in Southern California where I've noticed most of his novels are set around. He's written so many best-selling novels (over 44 at the last count) and is still going strong. Most of his work revolves around the strange and bizarre ... more

Advantages Advantages Strong characters, great narrative, scary.

    Disadvantages Disadvantages None.

There are only a handful of books that have truly terrified me; The Shining by Stephen King, The Hellbound Heart by Clive Barker and Renegades by Shaun Hutson. Now I can add another title to this list: Velocity by Dean Koontz. Billy Wiles is a barman in the Napa Valley. He lives a quiet, reclusive life; as he has ever since his girlfriend fell into a coma. One night after work, he finds a note on his windshield. Billy is given two choices: do nothing and a young schoolteacher will be killed, contact the police and instead an elderly charity worker will be murdered. Either way someone dies, and ... more

'If you don't take this note to the police, I will kill a lovely blonde schoolteacher somewhere in Napa County…If you do take this note to the police, I will instead kill an elderly woman…You have six hours to decide…the choice is yours!' What do you make of this note?? This is what the hero of the story Billy Wiles receives one day.. Billy Wiles is an ordinary bartender working in a tavern in Napa county. For years he had lead a simple life with a sort of indifference to whatever was going on around him. His dull and routine life is disrupted when he receives this unsettling note. His first ... more
