Venus of Dreams. ************ By Pamela Sargent.
Introduction: ********* Not normally the 'Type' of Sci-fi I'd go for but the blurb interested me and so I was hooked. An Epic time spanning novel about Terraforming Venus.
Synopsis: ******* We follow 9 year old Iris from her childhood living within her matriarchal family. She is an odd child who wants to learn to read and write! Via the computer linked headband she can access the Worlds A.I. Internet and gain all the knowledge known to man. Her extended family, comprising almost completely of women, think she is wasting time and 'Credits'. After all, she only needs to know how to fix the machinery if it breaks or how best to sow crops in differing weather climates. But Iris has dreams and ambitions; she wants to work on the "Project".
The project is now 400 years old. It will see Venus eventually terraformed into another Earth. Iris passionately wishes to be a part of this and so is sucking up knowledge like a sponge.
When her chance comes she will have to make some startling sacrifices.
Opinions: ****** Iris can come across as sometimes desperate and sometimes uncaring. She gets pregnant to one of the spacers in order to get up to the orbiting 'Islands' with him when he finally leaves. She seems uncaring about her new born son, Benzi, maybe this changes in the next novel.
I can't emphasise enough how unlike my normal Sci-fi this book is. Which really shows how well written the story is. It is a slow building novel which exposes layers upon layers of future Earth. It's a touchy feely novel, with a slight twist to the Sci-Fi end of things, maybe I'm getting old?
When they get to Venus the Techo-Sci really kicks in. With incredible descriptions of Venus and her changing face. The novel is part of a trilogy and to be honest I can't wait to read the other two.
Advantages: Different Sci-Fi novel Disadvantages: Was missing something?
Venus of Dreams. ==============
The story is all about Iris and follows her from childhood through to adulthood and the amazing journey and single mindedness she exhibits to reach her goal, her dream, her dreams of VENUS. The Earth is run by huge conglomerates who are currently terraforming Venus, changing it into a new Earth. this way they can ship new people there and continue their control and exploitation of them. Iris knows non of this and ... ...will sacrifice the security of her matriarchal community, she will marry a man from the 'Projects' to aid her and she will have a baby and lose her way as a mother. All so her dream can be achieved but will it be enough? Written very well and moves along at a steady pace. at first Iris is not a very likable character but she soon changes, into a not very nice person at all! only towards the end will she see exactly what she has given up and what ...
