"Cheesy music at its peak!"

I'm sure people will think my music tastes are getting stranger and stranger with the weird and wonderful CD reviews I'm producing, and here's another one to add to the collection. For those who have never heard of Mrs Mills, she was an English pianist who shot to fame in the 60's and 70's for playing music on her piano. More so for playing party songs and sing-a-long tunes. She was an excellent pianist and could easily play at speed. She was born in 1918 and died in 1978.

Price and Availability

As with the last review, I picked this up from a charity shop for just £1. But this is also available on Amazon at new for £3.99 or used from £2.47. You can also purchase each song individually for download for 99p.

The Songs

1) I'd Like To Teach The World To Sing
I'm sure we've all heard this song. She plays this at the pace you would sing the song and this sounds really good when played just on the piano. There are drums playing in the background with the piano in the forefront. Midway through the song the pitch goes up a notch and I really enjoyed listening to this.

2) Tie A Yellow Ribbon Round The Old Oak Tree
The song is sung with the audience singing along to this song, with Mrs Mills playing this on the piano. Unlike the last track you have audience participation with this song. Although you got the singing along, you can also hear Mrs Mills playing along on the piano.

3) Bring Me Sunshine
Going back to just the audio, she plays this on the piano at a nice tempo. It's not too fast and you've got the beat of the drums playing lightly in the background Throughout the song you'll hear other instruments playing along to accompany the piano. This is a fun song to sing along to.

4) Buttons and Bows
I had never heard of this song before until I bought this album. It's not a fast song, and you've just got Mrs Mills playing the piano. It's a nice song to hum along to and has a nice tempo to it.

5) Diamonds Are A Girls Best Friend
Things pick up slightly with this song. As with the last track, there is just the piano playing on this track. This is a great song that she plays really well. I find with a lot of these songs you don't need the words as you can sing along and dance to them just by listening to the tune.

6) Love And Marriage
This is one of them tunes that most people would have heard of. This is quite a slow song compared to some of the songs she plays. There is no vocals to this song and a great song for those that love all the old songs.

7) Get Me To The Church On Time
Following on nicely from the previous track, Mrs Mills plays this really well. I can't help but sing along to this track when listening to them. That's the thing with these cheesy songs, you can't help but hum along to them!

8) Que Sera Sera
This is another audio track with no vocals. Doris Day is famous for singing this, and this has a nice tempo to it. It's not too fast and the sound of the song raises a pitch midway through the song. The rolling of the drums can be heard in the background.

9 When You're Smiling
This is a fast paced track and has a very quick tempo to it. I've watched her play this on You Tube and makes me smile how she always look so jolly and smiling. This is a really fun song to listen to and is a really happy and vibrant tune.

10) Chattanooga Choo Choo
This track has audience participation in it and has the audience singing along with Mrs Mills playing the song. This was made famous by Glenn Miller and his Orchestra. This is played at a nice speed for the audience to sing along to. I do enjoy this song as I am a great fan of Glenn Miller's music so this is one of my favourites.

11) Carolina In The Morning/Baby Face/Waiting For The Robert E Lee
This medley of 3 songs has, once again, got audience participation singing along to these 3 tracks. This is very much a sing-a-long. Each of the songs aren't played in full but long enough for people to have a good sing-a-long to. This is a fun medley of tunes for those that like to sing along to.

12) Hello Dolly
This track has a singer, it sounds like, on the stage with Mrs Mills singing along to this song with the audience joining in with clapping and singing along with Mrs Mills playing on the piano. You can also hear the band playing in the background with the trumpet and drums playing.

13) I'm Forever Blowing Bubbles
Now you really can't get more cheesy than this song, can you? This is just an audio track and is played at quite a slow pace too. She places this well and sounds really nice when played just on the piano.

14) By The Light Of The Silvery Moon
This is another one of the old time songs that is played on the piano with singing coming in a few seconds into the track.

15) On Mother Kelly's Doorstep
This is another instrumental on an old classic. I think she plays this really well. It's not played too fast and a classic I love singing along to.

There are 31 tracks on this album altogether. As you can see from the remaining songs on the album, there are a mixture of medleys and songs you can sing along to. There are a few old time classics from the wartime era and songs that have been made famous from various artists and bands.

16) California Here I Come
17) Don't Know Who (I Just Do)/I'll Be With You In Apple Blossom Time/Bye Bye BlackBird
18) Can Can
19) Knees Up Mother Brown
20) March Of The Mods
21) Sweet Georgia Brown
22) You Made Me Love You
23) Enjoy Yourself (It's Later Than You Think)
24) Ma (He's Making Eyes At Me)
25) Five Feet Two Eyes Of Blue
26) Chicargo/Avalon/Who's Sorry Now
27) Wish Me Luck (As You Wave Me Goodbye)
28) Yellow Submarine
29) As Time Goes By
30) Show Me The Way To Go Home
31) We'll Meet Again

My Thoughts

This is a great sing-a-long album. There are a couple of medleys in here and also a few songs with the audience singing along too. Although the majority of the album is Mrs Mills playing the piano, it's nice to get a few different style of tracks thrown in to add to the mixture. Certainly a great album for those that love all those old time classics.

Thanks for reading.

I watched a documentary about her on BBC4 not long ago - she seemed such a nice and happy person and really loved to entertain people.
