ViaMichelin Navigation X-960 New Edition - Good time to buy.
I recently had a scare, when my trusty TomTom threw a wobbler, and I thought I would need to replace it, I had chance to look around, and remember looking at this particular model, mainly because it looked like my TomTom, I assume it was a copy. I am not saying this is a bad thing, let someone else decide what the customer wants and then provide just that.again, I am pleased to say my TomTom is in working order so I do not need to replace it, if and when I do however, I may well go for this model. At less than £90 it has to be a bargain. This is the cheapest price I could find brand new, so you could get a real good second hand bargain.
The basic idea is the same as most of these gizmos, there is a touchscreen, a mains or car charger, a USB lead for connecting to a PC, and a suction cup for attaching the thing to your windscreen. The unit is very compact, at just four inches wide, and weighing in at a mere 136 grammes. The case is in a dark grey colour, which seems to match most car interiors. It comes with a 3.5 inch LCD screen. The battery is designed to last two hours, like the rest of them. Normally the unit is trickle charged while in use, but not of course if you are on foot. All the information is installed onto an SD card, you can add to this from a PC, or a DVD.
There is also a lot of Michelin type things, like Hotel and restaurant recommendations from the Michelin guide.
One small possible snag, is that the unit is not compatable with Mac PCs.
These units are small enough to be placed in your pocket, and there is a range of accessories available, including funky carry cases, an external GPS aerial, and styluses, (or should that be stylii?).
Michelin is of course that French firm, famous for the big fat Bibendum Michelin man. They have been helping drivers to get around for many years now, and still do many maps and guides.

Coverage is 99.9% of the UK as well as Ireland, both the Republic and Northern Ireland. Plug & Go technology means no setting up, no downloads, no delays.
This is a very simple entry level piece of kit, and as such, it gets my recommendation.
Advantages: Easy to use and set up, clear instructions. Disadvantages: Annoying voice that sometimes insists I'm speeding when I'm not!
...I have found the ViaMichelin X-960 to be an excellent piece of kit.
I'll get the annoyances over with first - the first one has to be that there's only two voices to choose from - an irritating schoolmistress and an american lady - both voices get on my nerves after a short while. The second annoyance is that sometimes it tells you off for speeding when you're not - most commonly on an urban 40mph road.
Bar those two annoyances, it's a great piece ... ...route somewhere, which takes things like "scenic roads" into account when planning your journey, something that I find a real bonus.
Overall, I would recommend the ViaMichelin to anyone that wants a satnav. It's already proved its worth to me in the month that I have had it. ...

WOW! What a piece of kit for the price. Worked straight out of the box, software a little fiddly to install due to vague instructions but once you are past that stage it is sooo easy to update everything free. Nice compact size to boot.
Simple display with time, speed, distance etc. and loads of options for sounds and displays, loads of warning options (speed/ cameras/ schools/ blackspots) and all the Michelin POIs you could need.
Also has an MP3 player, which I won't use and also includes a 1gig SD card which I am unlikely to ever fill.
Paid £99 inc delivery from Littlewoods catalogue but it can be got a little cheaper.

I've had a few different sat nav brands over the years but my favourite by far is ViaMichelin, (this being my second). Owners can update safety camera locations for FREE via the website, it has a built-in MP3 player, and a bright clear screen, speech is in my opinion the best I've heard on a budget sat nav, even at half volume I've had no trouble at all understanding the clear friendly female voice (she even lets you know when to exit a roundabout ... ...Another great feature is the verbal warnings and reminders that a "speed check" is approaching and how far away it is (in yards or metres), some other sat nav's just bleep (usually when it's too late) then charge you an annual fee for the service. This does not have a "take me home" feature but I think this is for security reasons in case a thief gets hold of the device, it does have a list of most recent visits in which your home address will be ...

...Good. Very Good. This is a great entry-level SatNav for people who want a smart looking device with user-friendly features at a low price.
I bought this SatNav as I'd had a TomTom which was fine but needed upgrading as it was old and out of date. I intially bought an RAC model running Route 66 but after taking two back because they never picked up a signal, I bought the ViaMichelinX-960 New Edition.
You'll see these going around stupidly cheap now as ViaMichelin don't make/sell SatNav units, but they have continued to provide product updates via their website and sync software (included).
The device is easy to use, colourful and has a nice voice to it available in both US and UK English, male or female as well as a variety of other languages. I find the battery lasts about 4 hours before I need to recharge/plug in....
