I have just discovered something great that is helping me breathe at night (well Alun bought it, but I am writing about it so I can claim a bit of the credit) and is also going to help me sleep better at night even when my cold has passed. It’s a new invention form Vicks that I’m sure we will be buying a lot more of in the future! This amazing new thing is Breathe Right Nasal Strips!
~~~What are they?
They are plaster like strips that you stick to your nose. You can use them during the night to help you sleep (they can also stop you snoring) and also during the day ~ usually during exercise or when you are really having trouble with a bunged up nose. They come in two varieties ~ Standard and Mentholated, three pack sizes ~ 8, 10 and 30 and in two sizes ~ Large and Small/Medium. Packs of 30 cost £13.99 and packs of 8 (which are mentholated) and 10 (which come in clear and standard) cost £5.99. Ours came from Boots; I’m sure other places stock them, but I haven’t left the house since I went to the Doctors last week, so I haven’t looked anywhere else Alun got a pack of 8 mentholated ones for each of us ~ mine where Small/Medium (because I have a delicate little nose ~ these suit anyone with a small to average sized conk) and Alun plumped for the large (they are little bit big for him ~ the description says “for an adult with a larger nose”). They are only meant to use once, so make sure you don’t re-use the strip. As with any plasters it’s best not to use them on broken skin and don’t let anyone under five years old use them either. The strips contain natural rubber latex as well, so they aren’t suitable for anyone who has an allergy!
~~~What do you do with them?
There is a pictorial instruction leaflet inside which shows you which is the best place to position them on your nose. It’s quite easy because they are self adhesive. They stick onto the outside of your nose resting on the nostrils ~ they hold the nostrils apart slightly to “pull congested nasal passages open”. The menthol bit (if you buy that option) needs to be activated by scratching the strip gently. I found that you did need to occasionally scratch the strip every now and then to keep the menthol working. Hopefully then you will go to sleep and be able to breathe easier.
~~~What did we think?
8 days on and we think they are great! Just make sure that you use the right size for your nose though ~ I accidentally used the large and woke up with the strip stuck to my left cheek! When you get the right size they fit well and, once securely stuck on, they really helped me to sleep.
Alun snores if he rolls onto his back (especially if his nose is a bit blocked anyway) and he tried them to see if they would make any difference. He woke up feeling less congested and I can vouch for the fact that he didn’t snore! He tried the next night without one (to see if it was a fluke) and he breathed heavily and snored again. The third night he reverted back to using the strip and my night was a lot less disturbed!
They do feel a little odd at first, but I was surprised how quickly I got used to wearing one. Just a slight pinching on the side of your nose and nostrils, not a lot more than that! I looked in the mirror the first morning and thought I looked a little on the silly side ~ then I looked at Alun and he looked as silly as I did, so I didn't feel as bad. Don't think I'd venture outside the house in one, but then again, this is 'flu not a fashion parade!
Just make sure that you remove them slowly and carefully ~ the adhesive is a little strong and it can be quite painful if you just tear them off! They are best removed while in the shower or having a wash…loosen up the end bits that are resting on your nostrils and then carefully peel off. They also stick on better if your nose is clean and dry…so put them on after you’ve had a wash at night before getting bed.
The menthol smell isn’t particularly strong, so isn’t too overpowering. I was worried that if it was too pungent, it might have the opposite effect and keep me awake. In reality there was just a delicate smell of menthol (a bit like a very mild menthol sweet) so I was able to settle down and get a pretty good night’s rest.
I was really impressed with the Breathe Right strips ~ when Alun came home with them I must admit I was a bit dubious…I couldn’t see how a small piece of plaster could make any difference. The strips are really springy, so they really do pull open your nasal passages and they really did help both of us breathe better. They only work if you put them on properly though, so make sure you take the time to study the instructions and do it right. We found it was easier to put them on each other ~ yes; it’s a bundle of laughs at bedtime in our house at the moment!
I would definitely recommend Vicks Breathe Right Nasal Strips ~ they have been good for us on two counts; helping my blocked nose AND helping Alun’s snoring! They are quite expensive, but they DO work, so we will probably buy them during the winter when we are more bunged up.
Advantages: OH had a better nights sleep Disadvantages: I could still hear him snoring!
I thought I would write this review from my point of view rather than my partner (who is the one using them). I have decided to do it this way because the way I see it, I am the one who truly knows whether or not they are working! My partner has snored for as long as I have known him, and while it hasn't been a major problem in the past, for some reason it has gotten worse over the past few weeks - to the point where it is driving me mad! I bought ... ...any sleep, lying awake next to my partner. I paid £5.98 for them - which I though was a bit pricey considering what they are. But I bought them thinking £5.98 is nothing if I get a good night sleep! Essentially all they look like is a plaster, only shaped to go over the nose. On the packaging they claim to pull open the nasal passages and encourage breathing through the nose rather than the mouth. They come in different sizes (although gives no explanation ...
Advantages: They work ok Disadvantages: They don't completely work
I've been having a bit of a nose congestion problem recently and according to my husband I always snore when I am asleep. I of course, don't hear it or believe him but apparently it is worse when my nose is blocked up so out of frustration that I cannot take any medicines at the moment (due to the fact that I am pregnant) I decided to buy some of these Breathe Right Nasal Strips in an attempt to get right of the congestion. These are problem a good ... ...or cannot as they are a product you just use outside of your body and are drug free so this is one positive for the strips. The strips are said to gently open your nasal passages to help you breathe better, relieve nasal congestion and reduce snoring. The strips basically look like little plasters but they are not made of plaster material. They are plastic and stick to your nose with a very sticky glue. It's almost like they bond to your nose as ...
Advantages: Kills Snoring Effectivley Disadvantages: I Miss Snoring
Nothing beats a good olde snore and I snore like a badger. This is fine and dandy when you are sleeping alone, but hwne you are sharing the bed with annother human being it can be a problem. In order to solve this problem we have been to the quack and got a nasal spray which produced varying results, so out of despiration we got these to try. At £5-99 for 10 it is a pricey solution but if it means that the other half is not bothered by my snoring ... ...Nasal Strips look a bit like a plaster that fits across your nose. They work by gently lifting you nasal cavities upwards increasing the opening, and fitting the strips are easy with clear instructions.
I was sceptical about this remedy working, as it is drug free, but after a weeks use I am sold on them. The normal morning conversation has changed from being about how much I snored last night, to what a good nights sleep she had. I feel better ...
