Oh the joys of being a parent! Not only have I had to nurse my poor eldest baby back to something resembling “healthy”, but now she is on the mend I have had to contend with her bug myself….. And by god how she must have suffered!
Now my husband is not really used to me being too ill, usually sniffing and complaining for a couple of hours, then sucking it in and getting on with it, not this time! This time it has completely floored me, I have aches, pains, cold symptoms, shaking so bad I actually thought I was having a fit (I kid you not!) and finally the joy that is constant nausea!
Now, as much as I like sharing, I really do not want my husband to get this bug, he has just started a new job and could do without having any time off work during his training period, hence the product I will now review!
The product I will now review is “ Vicks,
first defence, micro - gel nasal spray”.
I have to be truthful, when I first saw this advertised I was dubious, I have always been brought up to believe that any illness that is germ based will inevitably have to run it’s course regardless of medication, so the idea that this particular brand could possibly halt the cold germs in there tracks….. Ok, after this weekend I would be willing to give anything a try. So after sucking it in, so to speak, enough to be able to actually leave the house to get some essentials, I decided I would purchase some and see if it prevents hubby’s cold….. See, I am a good wife occasionally!
So, ½ hour ago I found myself wandering up and down the medication aisle in my local Asda, first the important purchase, my cold and flu tablets, (I,m only a good wife very occasionally! LOL), after buying the ones that I deemed to be one step down from smack I start looking for the first defence spray.
I find the spray nestled amongst the catarrh and sinusitis medications, I am quite impressed that for a product that is supposedly so invaluable, it is more than reasonably priced, costing me £6.00 a bottle, this might not seem cheap to some but I have just had to spend a small fortune on head lice products so this to me is cheap!
The box is reasonably small in size and stand up rectangular in shape, the colouring of the box is very distinctive with the colours being a nice blue and striking silver colour. There is the usual information on the box, brand name, product name, properties for use and under the picture of a quite ill looking mans face there is the statement that this product is enhanced with plant extracts…. Ok, good for you!
Now normally I would have just lobbed it straight into the basket and carried on my merry way, but the fact that I genuinely, would like to prevent said hubby getting that deadly virus……. You know the one of which I speak, “MAN FLU!”, I thought that a little more research would be advisable.
On the side of the box there are instructions for use and recommended age of user, I was hoping that I might be able to use it on my son, he is the only one aside form hubby that hasn’t had it, and he has already started sneezing! Recommended age of user, 12 years old onwards (oh, buggar!), without tilting head , apply 2-3 sprays per nostril, 4 times a day, ok, so far so good! When using first defence it is normal to experience increased nasal discharge and a temporary stinging or smarting sensation, after reading that part I am already mentally working out how to get this stuff up his nose, without first reading directions for use, not sure I could spray this stuff up my nose!
Finally on the back of the box there is the “when to use” statement , this should be used at the first sniffle of a cold, or like the situation I find myself in now, when there is the chance that a cold may be caught. The basic premise of use is simply this, this is a gel spray, that once sprayed up your snitch wraps itself around the cold causing germs until removed from the nasal cavity.
Ok, I’m sold, so I put into the trolley and away we go!
I decide the best line of defence, in the case of my husband is attack! The second I get in the house I drag my husband into the kitchen and make him spray it up his nose, he was so trusting with the first nostril…. Not quite so with the second!
His initial reaction was one of “oww, my bloody eyes are smarting”, followed by a lot of sniffing and quite a lot of snot. The fact that he still had to spray this stuff up the second nostril was touch and go whether it would happen. To keep me sated he spray both nostrils, but I greatly doubt he will be repeating this action!
Does it work, well time will tell! There are the very doubtful of us out there that will state that the reason a cold has not developed is because it wasn’t “their turn” and not necessarily the nasal spray, but even if it helps as a placebo cure it’s worth it…. Right?

As a final after thought, with this being added a few weeks after this review was written, by husband has so far managed to elude the dreaded bug that floored myself and my daughter, so it does work..... well make up your own minds!
