for example associated with colds, flu, sinusitis and nasal allergies (allergic rhinitis) such as hayfever. Vicks sinex decongestant nasal spray contains the active ingredient oxymetazoline, which is a type of medicine called a decongestant. How it works: When this medicine is sprayed into the nose, the oxymetazoline works by acting on alpha receptors that are found in the walls of blood vessels in the linings of the nasal passages and sinuses. It causes these blood vessels to contract and narrow, thereby decreasing blood flow into the linings of the nose and sinuses. This reduces swelling and the feeling of congestion. It also reduces the production of mucus, helping to relieve a blocked nose. The nasal spray helps relieve congestion in a few minutes and the effect of the medicine lasts for about eight hours. One to two sprays should be used in each nostril every six to eight hours as necessary, for up to seven days. As the medicine causes the blood vessels in the nose to contract, it minimises the amount of medicine that is absorbed into the bloodstream from the nose. This means that the nasal spray has a relatively local effect in the nose and is unlikely to have side effects on other parts of the body. Always read the label/leaflet Use with caution in: Coronary heart disease. High blood pressure (hypertension). Overactive thyroid gland (hyperthyroidism). Diabetes mellitus. Glaucoma. Enlarged prostate gland (prostatic hypertrophy).

I found Vicks Sinex to be especially beneficial before going to sleep, a couple of sprays just before bedtime kept my nose clear and I was able to sleep soundly through the night.
THE BORING BITS
I will bore you with all the dull bits now and list all the product information that I gleaned from the patient information leaflet included with the product:
Well wouldn’t you know it! I managed to get through the winter months without a hint of the sniffles but now with the first kiss of summer I have developed an absolutely ear popping, sinus blocking, eye watering bummer of a cold. Mind you if my husband catches this it will be classed as Death-watch Flu!
Anyway to cut to the chase my cold lurgy developed rapidly and by lunch time I was so blocked up I couldn’t breathe through my nose at all. I felt like I had two engineering bricks rammed firmly up each nostril. Now I can just about put up with a runny nose, sore throat, shivers and muscular aches but I can’t abide being blocked up. I get all panicky and claustrophobic.
So breathing heavily through my mouth I hot footed it down to the local chemist and purchased a bottle of Vicks Sinex Nasal Spray for £2.49.
The beauty of this product is that it is simple to use and the results are almost immediate. However this product must be used with caution… please read on and you will see why.
Vicks Sinex comes in a small carton with the familiar red, green and white packaging associated with Vicks products. The white, plastic bottle contains 20 ml of nasal spray solution. According to the information written on the carton “Vicks Sinex can be used to treat a blocked nose caused by the common cold, hay fever or sinusitis.
As I said earlier this spray is very easy to use. All you need to do is insert the nozzle of the bottle into one nostril, completely cover the other nostril with your finger and then squeeze the bottle and give one or two short, quick squirts followed by some deep inhaling; then repeat the process to the other nostril. The trickiest bit is to inhale deeply which is quite hard when your nose is totally bunged up.
The sensation once you have squirted the spray is rather unpleasant and can be quite astringent. The liquid shoots up the nasal passage and straight down the back of the throat – this again is somewhat unpleasant and for a very short time can leave a nasty sting in the back of your throat as well as a taste of the spray. Luckily though this nasty sensation is very temporary.
The results are almost instantaneous and dramatic and within seconds of spraying you can breathe freely through both nostrils for up to eight hours. Ah bliss – is that coffee I smell?
I found Vicks Sinex to be especially beneficial before going to sleep, a couple of sprays just before bedtime kept my nose clear and I was able to sleep soundly through the night.
THE BORING BITS
I will bore you with all the dull bits now and list all the product information that I gleaned from the patient information leaflet included with the product:
The dosage of one to two sprays to each nostril can be repeated at 6 – 8 hourly intervals but no more than 3 times per day.
Not to be given to children under the age of six.
Do not use Sinex after the expiry date.
Advice is given to seek medical advice before using the product if suffering with high blood pressure, any heart complaint, diabetes, thyroid disease, kidney or liver disorders, are pregnant or breast feeding or if you are taking any other medication.
Consult your doctor after seven days if symptoms persist, you accidentally take too much of the product or you develop new symptoms
Most people do not experience any side effects whilst using Vicks Sinex but if you do notice anything unusual or have any unusual side effects speak to your doctor or pharmacist.
Proctor & Gamble are the manufacturers of Vicks Sinex. According to information on their website www.P&G.com they have been in existence since 1837 when they started out as a small family firm operating a candle and soap company in Cincinnati, Ohio, USA. Today Proctor & Gamble, markets almost 300 products to more than 5 billion consumers in 140 countries.
This product contains 0.05% w/v Oxymetazoline Hydrochloride which is the main ingredient for reducing the swollen nasal membranes which cause the congestion. There are quite a few other ingredients/chemicals in this product: Menthol, Camphor, Sodium Hydroxide Sodium Citrate Dehydrate, Citric Acid Anhydrous, Tyloxapol, Chlorexidine Digluconate, Benzalkonium Chloride, Disoduim Edentate, Eucalyptol and purified water.
THE SCARY BIT
I left the list of chemicals/ingredients until last because I do think Vicks Sinex is a useful SHORT TERM medicine but the amount of chemicals used did concern me.
I have researched this product using various websites and I found that due to the inclusion of Oxymetazoline Hydrochloride, which is a vasoconstrictor and reduces the swollen nasal membranes, incorrect usage of this product can be counter productive. In effect if you use this product for more than seven days you can become RELIANT upon it!
So in short this is a good short term medicine but must be used with care and in accordance with the instructions. Provides immediate relief for painful congestion and sinus problems and at £2.49 per bottle is very reasonably priced and readily available from most supermarkets and chemists.
Advantages: Clears your nasal bung.. Disadvantages: Shoving something up your hooter..
...and puffing freely.
Vicks Sinex.....
You will see it on the supermarket or Chemist shelf. It will be in a funky Green and Silver Metallic box, with Sinex in huge letters splashed over he front. It is usually kept with the cold remedies and other things that you stick up your nose when you are losing the battle with snot.
On taking it out of the box you will be faced with a white spray bottle. Its about three inches high and white in colour. It has ... ...around it,so you can easily undo it with your thumb and forefinger. Its not fiddly at all,and isnt screwed on too tight in the first place,so it should be okay for everyone to undo.
How do I use it Miss Snotty Fluff?
Well children, for a start you need to read how often you are supposed to use it.Aha there is our first mistake..it is only suitable for adults and children over six years old.
On unscrewing the cap I am presented with a white nozzle. ...

Advantages: It works and it's cheap! Disadvantages: Very addictive
Vicks Sinex Decongestant Nasal Spray is a spray which you squirt up your nostrils to give "relief from a blocked nose". The spray is recommended as suitable for anyone aged over 6 years, although I wouldn't be too happy giving it to a child to use - it's the kind of thing a child might squirt up their nose every five minutes if they could and I don't think that would be very healthy! I've used the spray quite a lot of times and would recommend it, ... ...£2.50 per 20ml bottle - the bottle doesn't state how many applications there are per bottle, but one bottle has seen me through several colds so I'd reckon that it probably contains several hundred squirts. According to the instructions you need to reuse every six to eight hours but on my experience the effects start to wear off within about three to four hours. It certainly does what it says - within seconds of squirting the spray your nose will ...

The claim on the packaging is to 'clear a stuffy nose caused by a cold, hayfever or sinusitis.'

~~ How do I use it? ~~
It really is a simple medication to take. I prefer the 'pump' action of the bottle to the 'squeezy' type bottle that you can also buy. To use, insert the nozzle into the nostril. Place your thumb on the base of the bottle, with index and middle fingers on the rim of the pump. Firmly squeeze the pump on the bottle to deliver either one or two sprays. Repeat for the other nostril. As you depress the pump, it is helpful ...

...leave you feeling snot-free.
Vicks Nasal Spray contains Oxymetazoline Hydrochloride which actually acts as a vasoconstrictor, which in more understandable terms, it helps to reduce any swelling of the nasal membranes, which actually cause the stuffed up feeling you get with blocked noses and will last for up to 8 hours for each dosage.

This process can be repeated every 6 to 8 hours, but please make sure you do not use ...

...sorry for myself I spied Vicks Sinex Decongestant Nasal Spray. I remember the adverts of old with poor old Malcolm and his problem of going to work with a runny nose, but no!! It works for eight hours (eight hours, pooh!). I recall that Malcolm looked a geeky enough bloke for me to believe that he was rid of the sniffles for his day, so I happily picked up the spray and mooched to the till. My purchase cost approximately £2.50. I can’t say for sure ... ...The active ingredient is Oxymetazoline Hydrochloride. The box actually boasts that the product will continue to work for up to 12 hours (12 hours, pooh!) On my return home, having oh deared and ahh’ed the daughter I took the little bottle from the pack and unscrewed the lid. I stuck the nozzle up my nostril and gave one short, sharp squirt. The spray went up and I took a deep breath through my nose as advised (well as deep as you can when there is ...

Quick and easy to use. Does seem to reduce severity of cold like symptoms and shortens timescale of suffering.
Expensive. Tastes revolting. Difficult to tell whether this product really does combat infection, as avoidance of coughs and colds could be put down to a sensible diet or healthy lifestyle instead. (*)
