I have a cold and it is early July, brilliant! My daughter came home from Tenerife last weekend with what I can only describe as Spanish Flu. She has been lying on the couch for a week now and I have been tending her with lots of ahhhs and oh dears and plying her with Lemsip and Complan. Meanwhile, I have managed to catch the little blighter germs and have succumbed to an ear infection and nasty runny nose.
Having run out of her necessary products to help her feel human again, I decided to buy myself something to ease the nose as I am fast starting to look like Rudolph of Red Nose fame!
Mooching around Tesco and feeling particularly sorry for myself I spied Vicks Sinex Decongestant Nasal Spray. I remember the adverts of old with poor old Malcolm and his problem of going to work with a runny nose, but no!! It works for eight hours (eight hours, pooh!). I recall that Malcolm looked a geeky enough bloke for me to believe that he was rid of the sniffles for his day, so I happily picked up the spray and mooched to the till.
My purchase cost approximately £2.50. I can’t say for sure because I didn’t check but the other ops say that. The active ingredient is Oxymetazoline Hydrochloride. The box actually boasts that the product will continue to work for up to 12 hours (12 hours, pooh!)
On my return home, having oh deared and ahh’ed the daughter I took the little bottle from the pack and unscrewed the lid. I stuck the nozzle up my nostril and gave one short, sharp squirt. The spray went up and I took a deep breath through my nose as advised (well as deep as you can when there is no passageway through). I sat back and waited with baited breath (or something like that).
Did it work? Did it heck! I am still working my way through a loo roll and yet there is still no respite from the blooming gremlin in my sinus’s.
I think I have been had as this spray certainly has not worked for me today. I normally take Lemsips which guarantee a couple of hours of respite for the nose but this spray is absolute pants.
Apparently it is dangerous to keep spraying your nose as you can seriously damage the lining of your nasal passages so I have been fighting the urge to give it another little squirt, just to make sure.
You may find it helpful if you have hayfever, but in my experience of hay fever it is the itchy throat, high temperature and itchy eyes that are also problematic not just the nose.
The pack tells me that if my problem’s persist, consult your doctor. Do not take if you are pregnant, breast-feeding, have thyroid trouble or heart, kidney or liver trouble and it is not suitable for children under 6 years of age.
No, not worth wasting you money on this one in my humble opinion.
Mrs Angry of Maidstone is about to return to her position on the couch to feel sorry for herself! Sniff, sniff.

Try this Gwen, when I was younger and butcher, I played rugby a lot, to aid breathing I smeared neat Vicks around the nostrils. Effective but doesn't win you a lot of friends but who needs them on a rugby pitch.

These were a nightmare for me as a kid. You know the little long ones that were actually shaped like your nostrils. My mum used to keep one in the cupboard and when I had a cold it would come out. Along with whatever was left on it from whoever had used it last. Oh Yuck.
