I guess it must be a hazard of my job.I work with Children. So I get a lot of germs being sneezed, coughed or spat at me.My immune system has built itself up.But about every three months I get a nice big juicy cold.So off I toddle to buy my cold survival kit. This usually involves a box of lovely luxury tissues, some paracetamol and some nasal spray.
Now I am asthmatic and should'nt really take decongestant tablets. But I must admit I have done in the past, and have generally been okay. But I did try a nasal spray and it seemed to be a lot more effective than a tablet anyway. This doesnt mean that all you wheezy folk can go out eating Sudafed and then being ultra wheezy okay?? Asthma is really quite an individual thing.I am a cougher, I cough and cough and cough until I almost pass out..or do a wee. So when I get a cold I find it really difficult to breath,so I need something to keep my tubes
open and puffing freely.
You will see it on the supermarket or Chemist shelf. It will be in a funky Green and Silver Metallic box, with Sinex in huge letters splashed over he front. It is usually kept with the cold remedies and other things that you stick up your nose when you are losing the battle with snot.
On taking it out of the box you will be faced with a white spray bottle. Its about three inches high and white in colour. It has a little green screw top lid. It has little ribs around it,so you can easily undo it with your thumb and forefinger. Its not fiddly at all,and isnt screwed on too tight in the first place,so it should be okay for everyone to undo.
How do I use it Miss Snotty Fluff?
Well children, for a start you need to read how often you are supposed to use it.Aha there is our first mistake..it is only suitable for adults and children over six years old. On unscrewing the cap I am presented with a white nozzle. Its quite short and fat, I guess so you don't ram it too far up your nose.
I now go back to reading the back of the tube to see how often I can use it.I am allowed to have one or two sprays up each nostril every six to eight hours. Right okay I shove the nozzle up my hooter whilst pressing down on the empty nostril to make sure that the spray goes right up into the nose area. I choose to have a couple of squibs to make sure that it really does work.
Upon spraying I cant say it feels unpleasant. It smells a litle bit like Eucalyptus which is quite pleasant. It feels a little bit wet up my nose, but after all the spray is in a fine metered dose not a gushing hosepipe.
After youre done you are told to inhale deeply.Which I do,which gives me some degree of relief.I must say though..I must have tiny nostrils because the nozzle seemed to really stretch my face out.So its best to use it in the privacy of a loo or when noone is around watching you.
Does it Work Then?
I have to say that yes it blinking does! Its such a relief as when you have a cold and youre nose is rock solid with snot and you sound like Darth Vader it makes you so grumpy! My nose really feels more comfortable and I can actually breath through it not through my mouth!I also have to say that it does last for several hours, although Im not sure that I could stretch it to eight without having another chuff up each nostril.
What makes it work?
The main ingredient is a topical Decongestant called Oxymetazoline. Nasal sprays are generally considered safer than tablets as you are only using it on a local area there will be less scope for side effects.
Oxymetazoline works by constricting the blood vessels up your nose, as its these that swell up and cause your blocked nose. The snot is actually trying to carry away the infection!
There are also ingredients to help preserve the mixture and to stop it from going off once opened.
Any Warnings to heed Mein Fluff?
Yep.Dont use it continuosly for more than seven days, as you probably need to see your Doctor as this clearly isnt working! Also you can get something called rebound congestion. If you use a decongestant too much it makes your body think that you constantly need to fight infection. Therefore it will produce more snot even if you dont have a cold.
You cant share this bottle with anyone else either. As you will spread your germs to someone else and vice versa. And as always dont let the kiddies get hold of it!
The main warning when it comes to any decongestants is that if you take Medication for High Blood Pressure you need to speak to your Doctor or Pharmacist first before using it.
My advice is if you are taking ANY OTHER MEDICATION check with your Pharmacist frist if you can use it.
Where can I get it ?
Well I bought mine for the handsome sum of £2.79 at Tesco. You dont have to buy it over the counter, so you can just pop it in your trolley. Thebottle is 20ml in size.I bought mine last year and the use by date is June 2008,so it has a very long shelf life.
I have also seen it in Boots,Superdrug and Lloyds the Chemist. So its easy to get hold of.
And Finally....
I am never without a tube of this on my medicine cupboard. It works really well and helps defeat the miserable symptoms of having a cold.Unfortunately it oesnt make the daytime tv more exciting when you are off work sick...

Yes this is good stuff, I use it when I am bunged up. It's great for squirting at mosquitos too.

My husband uses this all the time (also asthmatic - a throat clearer) he says he can't sleep when he hasn't used it as breathing through the nose is easier for his asthma. I did wean him off it for a while but then he got another cold and started again! :o) Jo

I have never used this to be honest, but the kids are always catching colds and things from school, so I might try it next time, erm a week on Wednesday or probably sooner!!!! Good review -DAZ-
