Basically, Vicks Ultra Chloraseptic is a local anaesthetic. The bottle has a long, thin nozzle hidden inside it, which you manoeuvre outwards. You then point the nozzle directly at the sore area of your throat and squirt.

Four days ago I took to my bed with fever, chills, pains in every muscle and joint in my body (even my individual teeth hurt!), and a throat that felt as though I’d been eating razor blades. Breathing hurt my throat, talking hurt my throat, swallowing was agony – basically, just existing hurt my throat.
On day two I called my mum and asked her to get me something from the chemist that was preferably not lozenges (tried ‘em all in my time, found ‘em all pretty useless). She came back with a tiny 15 ml bottle of Vicks Ultra Chloraseptic and a request for a fiver in return.
Basically, Vicks Ultra Chloraseptic is a local anaesthetic. The bottle has a long, thin nozzle hidden inside it, which you manoeuvre outwards. You then point the nozzle directly at the sore area of your throat and squirt.
First time I tried, I sprayed the stuff on the not-sore roof of my mouth, but by the second go I’d got the hang of it and managed to hit the affected spot.
I felt a sort of stinging sensation which lasted for a few seconds, tasted a vaguely lozenge type medicated flavour, and also felt some of the liquid trickle down my throat. I then waited to feel some blessed relief.
None came, so I did it again. The instructions suggested up to three squirts, but I did six because I was desperate, in agony and ready to cut out my own thorax with a kitchen knife. (Please note: I am not advocating the overuse of OTC medications for others, but I’ll do what I choose to myself).
A few minutes after the six squirts I did feel a little relief, but only a little, and it didn’t really last long. Just long enough for me to swallow a cup of tea and some strong pain killers (which didn’t help either).
Anyway, it’s now day four, I’m out of bed, my aches and fever have gone, but I still have the sore throat.
Over the last three days I must have used triple the recommended amount of Vicks Ultra Chloraseptic throat spray and can say without doubt that it has not helped. On the other hand, I ate half a tub of Haagen Dazs earlier on and it numbed my throat wonderfully for a good forty-five minutes.
I’ve read a couple of good reviews of this spray on this site, so maybe I’m immune to it or something. Or maybe this spray, like many over the counter medicines, is made so weak that you won’t damage yourself and therefore can’t sue. (Which begs the question why sell it – but that’s another op).
If you’ve not been put off by my review, you’ll want to know that the active anaesthetic ingredient is benzocaine, it’s not suitable for children under six, and it’s not suitable if you’re pregnant or breastfeeding.
In my opinion, it’s not suitable if you’ve got a sore throat either.
Advantages: quick working Disadvantages: aim it right
...times like these I buy Vicks Ultra Chloraseptic.
It just numbs the area of the throat that it touches, bringing instant relief and relaxation straight away.
It comes in a little bottle with a twist off lid, it's quite hard to get into it but this is good as you have to keep it out of reach of children, as it is a strong medicine that contains Benzocaine.
The throat spray comes in a little15ml bottle which has a spray nozzle you can twist and aim ... ...familiar green colour of all Vicks products and you can see the clear liquid inside the bottom of the bottle. It costs around £2.00 depending on where you buy it, I bought mine from the local chemist at the price of £1.97 but have seen it in the supermarkets for a little less. Once you have decided where it hurts the most, aim and spray to get instant relief from the pain, it works in seconds, numbing the back of the throat as soon as it touches ...

Advantages: Available from pharmacies - works quickly Disadvantages: A bit sickly if it trickles down the back of your throat
...recommended and they gave me Vicks Ultra Chloraseptic throat spray. The spray contains benzocaine, which is a local anaesthetic, and quickly numbs the pain of a sore throat. You have to spray the back of your throat 3 times – I found it best to give three short, sharp sprays – and you can repeat the treatment every 2-3 hours if needed. It’s not an unpleasant taste, although I did not like it when it trickled down my throat. But ... ...adults and children over 6 years of age. The recommended dosage is no more than eight uses per day and for no longer than three days. But really, if your sore throat is not any better after three days, you really ought to see your doctor and especially if it becomes extremely difficult to swallow or if your breathing is affected.
Ultra Chloraseptic is available from the pharmacy and costs just under £5.00 for a 15ml spray. I think it is a really ...

Advantages: With good aim, this stuff is heaven Disadvantages: Small bottle/spray
A few times i year i suffer from tonsilitus, im sure anyone who has ever had the condition or had a painfully sore throat can sympathise. Then again, i would be shocked if most of you who have experienced the same hadn't heard of ultra chloraseptics.
You can buy it from most pharmacies (and some stores if you are lucky). It comes boxed in the form of a quite large 15ml bottle, i say quite large because the lid is twice the size of the spray itself. ... ...is tucked away underneath. As basic direction goes, the idea is tat you turn the nozzle 180 degrees in the other direction to 'optimise' use and spray. The process seems simple enough however in practise, getting your aim straight on the mark is a tad more difficult. The directions recommend that you take no more than 3 sprays. Though i found that it usually takes 3-4 sprays to actually hit the mark you were aiming to relieve, consiquently numbing ...

Advantages: Relieves the pain IMMEDIATLY Disadvantages: the pain relief is temporary, need lots of sprays
When I do get a sore throat, this chlorest. product is the only thing that reliees the pain. The trick is getting it on the right spot in your throat. If you miss it's wasted. But when you hit the right spot, WOW the razor blades are gone and it's a wonderful relief finally. My sore throats always feel like blades are cutting my throat so I do need something strong like Chloreseptic. I wish the relief would last longer but until there is something ...

Quick and easy to use. Does seem to reduce severity of cold like symptoms and shortens timescale of suffering.
Expensive. Tastes revolting. Difficult to tell whether this product really does combat infection, as avoidance of coughs and colds could be put down to a sensible diet or healthy lifestyle instead. (*)
