Vicks as a brand:
Vicks has been around since the late 19th century, and has stuck on our shelves since then, best known for the VapoRub product, they also have a HUGE product range, with their main products with Nyquil and Dayquil (for day and night use). All of their products are for use in relieving the symptoms of cold and flu, and they're a very trusted and well used brand.
The Product itself:
Vicks Vaporub comes in a small green box (you will find this in the medicine aisle in the Supermarket and behind the counter in shops like Spar and Co-Op). Inside the green box is a small blue tub, with a turqoise lid. Upon opening the tub, you get hit by a sudden smell of the legendary Vicks menthol smell. Inside is a thick gloopy pale white gel, this has the consistency of Vaseline and the colour of Vaseline too.
To the touch it feels soft and gel like, but not sticky, and if you rub it between your fingers, it starts to "melt" in a way, and kind of dissolves into your skin.
The smell is very strong, and immediately gets starting on your blocked nose!
Vicks can be used on anybody from 6 months onwards, so children and adults can both use the same product making it an essential winter item!
Safe Use:
First off, there are somethings you must not do with Vicks VapoRub; Do not swallow or place in nostrils (this is because if you sniff up hard it will be swallowed!). And keep out of reach of children (as with all medicines), and do not use on children under 6 months old.
There are two ways which Vicks VapoRub can be used;
Rub on Method:
This is essentially the first use of Vicks VapoRub, and should be used at the first sign of a cold developing to try and stop it from developing.
Adults
Rub liberally onto chest, throat and back. I also put a little on my sinuses (my forehead) and just underneath my nose to it's easy to breath in. This is normally done at night before bed, and nightclothes should be left loose to allow the vapors to be easily inhaled.
Children:
For children a light layer should be put over the chest and back as with adults. Again clothes should be left loose.
Inhilation method:
I love doing this, and it always makes me feel a hundred times better. This should be done with adults only (over 12), This should be done if the first method does not work. Melt two teaspoons of Vicks VapoRub in a bowl of very hot (but not boiling) water. I always put a towell over my head for the next part: Inhale the mixture for around 10-15 minutes, this should help to unblock the nose and relieve head colds. As I said it does make you feel much better!
Vicks can be used with other medicines as it does not contain any medicine which is been taken within the body.
Price:
For a 50g tub, I paid £3.14, but it is only me who uses it in my house, so it lasts me a long time, I bought this from a Spar, so in Supermarkets, it will be a little less. I don't mind paying this much for my Vicks as it does last, and it does work well.
My Opinion:
Vicks always makes me feel better whenever I have a cold, as it does help to relieve the symptoms of the cold; Nasal catarrh, sore throat, congestion and coughs which are due to a cold. It definitely makes breathing much easier, and makes you generally happier. Another thing I do with vicks is get a tissue and rub a little Vicks onto it, then place it upside down on my pillow where I sleep, so that even if the Vicks is rubbed off me in the night, I can still inhale from the tissue. You could also rub it onto your pillow if you didn't mind having to wash it the next day.
As I said, it is always something well worth having in your cupboard especially coming up to winter!!!!
Summary: Amazing product, no wonder it has been around for over a century!

...bit over the benefits of Vicks vapour rub. Sorry a big smile just spread across my sexy lips as my mind just goes back to my poor depraved, oops I meant deprived childhood and how my sister and I used to fight over the last bit of Vicks in the bottle, oh happy childhood memories. I blame my father, because if he hadn't have been knocking off that blonde around the corner my Mum would have been able to afford a new jar. Still mustn't grumble as my ... ...with my 50g bottle of Vicks and as you lot are a bit on the old slow side I will tell you how to use it. Firstly you remove the white top and then that smell just wafts up your nostrils, ok if you just farted it's not that smell ok, jeeeez you lot are so childish and damn well immature, god only knows why I bother to try and educate you…

Advantages: Effective and comforting and it works! Disadvantages: A tad on the greasy side, so be careful of your nightwear...assuming you wear any!!
...My husband swears by Vicks VapoRub, and up till now I have dismissed it as a waste of time, but desperate times call for desperate measures and when I was awoken on Monday night with said cough and a head that felt like it was being pounded with a sledgehammer each time I coughed I stumbled down the stairs to search for it in my medicine cupboard.
I opened the small squat turquoise topped plastic jar (used to be glass and taller when I was a child!) ... ...my Mum used to rub Vicks on my back and chest to help me sleep. I use the term idyllic not rashly so when I am talking about being ill, its just that being ill when you were a child was much more pleasant don’t ya think? If you were lucky you had one or two loving parents who would minister to your every need, rustling up bowls of chicken soup, letting you stay off school and sleep in their bed at night, one of them defecting to your cold and tiny ...

...write my first op on Vicks Vapor rub for two reasons. Firstly, I was going to write on something less, how shall I say it – poncey, but I cannot think about anything at the moment being bunged up to the eyes with a ghastly cold. Secondly, I idolise Vick and I feel I have to spread the word.
For many years – more than I would care to remember or even admit, I have used Vicks vapor rub. Many cold relief and decongestants have worked their ... ...and has the instantly recognisable Vicks logo (an inverted triangle of blue border, with a green interior and a smaller red inverted triangle inside). The word ‘VapoRub’ is printed in red. What is it like? It is a whitish, opaque, greasy, filmy cream a bit like vaseline. It smells of camphor (not like moth balls) and eucalyptus obviously, like all decongestants seem to. What is it for? Well it does exactly what it says on the tin (or ...

...I’d recommend for colds is Vicks VapoRub. It is quite versatile in the way it can be used and is extremely effective. Vicks products are aimed at helping eliminate colds and/or coughs. Vicks VapoRub is a decongestant. It is clear and the consistency of it makes it easy to rub onto your body (i.e not too thick or runny). There are two orthodox ways of using the rub: the inhalation method or the rub on method.

EXPERIENCE
As it was safely kept at my cupboard for quite a while. Then few weeks later my little boy had a flu, cough and cold. He looks really poor and that irritating blocked nose also added to his suffering, so i remembered something to help him with his ...
Advantages: Nice strong decongestant smell Disadvantages: decongestant only lasts one night
Its that time of year again, coughs, colds etc and children that can't sleep due to blocked noses. My children suffer alot with this.
I've used in the past Karvol capsules on a handkerchief but the handkerchief gets lost in the middle of the night, the child ends up waking and that's end of your night's sleep.
They come in packs of 10. Big stick on squares which, when you open the individual packs smell of VicksVapoRub. You stick the square onto the pyjamas and they get a constant decongestant all night long without you having to worry or them waking up.
They are made by Lemsip and take on the old version of, as I said earlier, VicksVapoRub, they are non greasy and do exactly the same job.
You can get them from most supermarkets and chemists and they cost from £1.99 upwards and come in packs of ten clearly labelled ...
Advantages: Fast working, clears blocked nose Disadvantages: Strong menthol taste
combining this with any other paracetamol-containing medication.
My Experience
I had my first sachet last night, I was already suffering with a headache, sore throat, blocked nose and achiness. It was quick and convenient to make, the powder dissolved into hot water instantly. I added one teaspoon of sugar to this as suggested on the back of the packet.
The drink smelt like a mix between the original Lemsip drinks and Vicksvapo-rub. It was a rather strong smell, but not unpleasant (unless you don't like the smell of Vicks). While the drink cooled down I spent a few moments inhaling the fumes in an attempt to unblock my nose!
Once it had cooled I tried it and it was quite a strong to drink, a bit like literally drinking Vicks in hot water. It certainly wasn't disgusting but didn't go down quite as easily as the usual Lemsip ...
Quick and easy to use. Does seem to reduce severity of cold like symptoms and shortens timescale of suffering.
Expensive. Tastes revolting. Difficult to tell whether this product really does combat infection, as avoidance of coughs and colds could be put down to a sensible diet or healthy lifestyle instead. (*)
