I'd been shopping round for some new hair care products as presents for my twelve year old daughter. She was very keen on GHD but they are way over-priced and the reviews I've read on their performance are mediocre.
So I got her some Toni & Guy straighteners and then came across the Vidal Sassoon Hair Hydration Hair Dryer. Now initially I was surprised as I thought the whole point was to dry and not hydrate the hair and I also had connotations of having to put water in the device; and we all know that electricity and water generally do not mix!
My fears were soon allayed when I discovered that the 'hydration' is achieved by the hairdryer mixing negative charged ions with the warm air stream which not only aids faster drying but also helps retain the hair's natural moisture, leaving it feeling soft and smooth and looking naturally shiny. This model permits the user to adjust the proportion of ions in the air stream in accordance with their own hair type and preference.
So, that's the gimmick which as far as I'm aware is unique to Vidal Sassoon, and it works. Not only does the hair look and feel better but it also dries significantly faster with the ions turned on than without. But don't take my work for it - the dryer is also endorsed by The Trichological Society whose clinical trials confirm "Hair Hydration's IONIC TECHNOLOGY provides controlled styling without excessive dehydration - a major step forward in routine hair care."
Now Vidal Sassoon don't make a point of this but, as the dryer boasts a 2000 Watt motor with ceramic heating units, then any reduction in drying time, afforded by the ions, will, I presume, also reduce power consumption - thereby saving the planet as well as pennies in your purse.
The dryer is a little on the large and heavy side as is to be expected with such a hefty motor and heating elements, so some may find it a little unwieldy. However, that size also contributes to its robustness. It is rather trendy an is finished in a funky two-tone silver and pink colour scheme, rather than the boring black found with so many of the dryers in this league. Reassuringly, the dryer is also backed by a generous five year worldwide guarantee. Now that shows confidence and hopefully it will withstand the rigorous use by a young teenager.
The dryer also comes complete with interchangeable cool-shot concentrator end cap and a large diffuser to maximise waves and enhance curls.
It has a usefully long (2.8metres) salon type power cord and an equally useful hang up loop. The 2000W AC motor comes with a turbo boost facility together with two heat and speed settings as well as cool for use with the concentrator. There is also a comprehensive user guide and the international warranty with a list of addresses of service centres.
It all comes tastefully packaged in a sturdy reinforced cardboard box and just a protective polythene bag inside. The cardboard can be recycled and there is no polystyrene packaging to pile up at land fill.
The dryer generally sells for £35-40 which is quite expensive for a hair dryer aimed at the domestic market. But you do seem to get what you pay for here, rather than just paying for a designer name. The ionic technology works and there is the reassuring five year warranty. And if you take into account the electricity savings by using the ionic feature then it is probable that what seems an expensive device, could actually prove much cheaper in the long run.
It isn't all positive though as the unit is quite large and heavy in comparison to others.
GREAT NEWS: If you want to grab a bargain in time for Christmas, then head down to your local Netto as they're currently selling these dryers for just £19.99. Now with such a good unit at that knock-down price, it's rude not to!!
Advantages: powerful, ion diffuser, quick drying time Disadvantages: quite big and heavy
...finally got my own. The Vidal Sassoon Vs514 hairdryer.
I have to admit at first i didnt use it because it was huge and quite heavy compared to previous hairdryers id used but I started to give it another go and I have never gone back
You do get used to the weight of it but there so much power that now its understandable. I have quite thick hair and it dries my whole head in about 15 minutes.
It even has an added feature that other dryers dont ... ...compared tomy VS dryer and took twice as long which made me appreciate mine. I got the Vidal Sassoon dryer for christmas but I think it cost about £35 which sounds a lot but it is definitely worth the money. Not really suitable for kids though due to the weight ...
